    Yesterday in Montreal I purchased a Singer 201 k for $120.00 C/$89.00 US. Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware that the "k" is somewhat rare in North America. The serial # EF726900 was part of an allotment of 80,000 ordered on May 3, 1950.. Another interesting feature is that inside one of the drawers there is a metal plate that certifies it as a Singer table. Liked, subscribed.

    I adore my 1948 Singer 201K-3! I sew a lot of bags, clothing, upholstery, and other household gifts and items. It handles everything I throw at it. It never skips a stitch or groans at bulky seams. It just keeps on sewing. I did not know that it was considered rare. Thanks for the wonderful facts! (I'm in Canada and expect that there are not a lot of these machines here either.)

    Thanks for writing. Yes, they are fairly rare on this side of the Atlantic since the UK was the primary market for them. The power of this model is well known. The only limits to this machine has more to do with its not being tolerant of thicker thread weight whereas the Singer 15-91 and other Class 15 machines are more suited to somewhat heavier thread weight. But yes, the 201K and American 201 possess one of the finest stitches ever engineered ever.

I see on Facebook marketplace there are two more for sale within a few hours travel of me in mint condition but for $200 AUD. Hello, You kingly invite us to come see you to try out and look at your machines. Where are you located and what is the name of your shop workshop, if you work outside your home? I’d really enjoy hearing more about your machines and your experiences with them. I’d also enjoy trying out a few different models. Do you service any foreign made machines, besides the 201K, such as the Necchi BU or others that I mat not even know about. I taught myself to sew in 2012, since I had to find a challenging and interesting hobby after I was no longer able to practice medicine due to severe illness. I’m somewhat better now, and I focus my time on piecing quilts and then quilting them on both Singer domestic and other longarm machines. I’ve been using new Singer domestic machines since I’ve started sewing, but I’ve recently developed a very intense interest in vintage sewing, especially Singer machines to begin with that are refurbished by people like yourself who really know a lot about the inner workings if these machines and the history of sewing machines. Thank you very much, Michael

    I would if I came across one. You can get newer versions made in China. The originals are not that common, and can bring solid prices at places like Ebay. For the people I have done machine overhauls for, I have not had a high demand for them. They are fun and useful for very detailed stitching and are also coveted by Yachting folks as a good emergency repair tool if a sail is damaged while on the water.

    Yes, you are correct about some of the UK made Singers being different. I believe the UK 66 models had other decal patterns such as the beautiful Papyrus Design. Much of the engineering for UK and US Singers was similar, but tariffs and different market needs led Singer to make models to suit different needs. And of course, the Singer 222 was specific to the UK as well.

He got his buffer out, buffed it out. Then found some very small pits on bobbin case and buffed them. We tried it out and back to working like a charm. It may also need the fuzz that material sheds when you sew. I take a cheap small paint brush and clean mine. Hope this helps in some way.

  • @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hello Mike and thanks for your comment. Actually, both you and I are both correct. It just depends on which country you live in. For Australia as well as the UK, yes, these are the most common. In the US, the opposite is true. Almost all 201's ever sold in the US were potted motor models. So what I said about the 201k being very rare is true, albeit for the US market. Singer was a global sized company with factories in the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, and Brazil. And I may be missing some others. Why they chose to keep the potted motors strictly here in North America is a mystery. It may have to do with the fact that Singer imported more machines to the US than they exported largely due to tariff laws that appeared after WWII to help future the rebuilding of Europe's decimated production capacity. Just my guess.

  • @MikeWilliams-jd5ii

    @MikeWilliams-jd5ii

    7 жыл бұрын

    Ah, you're in North America. Yes they're pretty rare there. I bought a very sad 201K2 in April and had to pay way more than for any 201K3 (I usually pay less than $30, this was $102.50) and then had to re-wire the whole machine. We enthusiasts will certainly pay above the mark for something unusual. I started out buying 319Ks, which I still love, but there's nothing more satisfying to sew with than a 201. Until the 201K2 my preference was for 201K23s which have an aluminium head. Stitching is the same but they weigh only about half as much. I wrote about it on my blog: tailororfailure.blogspot.com.au/2016/02/servicing-your-201k-part-1.html. The only two drawbacks about the lighter machines are: 1. If someone has been too heavy-handed with screwing in a seam guide or a feed dog cover, it can strip the aluminium threads. I've only had one like this, and 2. If something really heavy is dropped on the needlebar side of the head it will bend it just enough to cause it to touch the crank as it turns. I've had one example of each of these problems, but that's out of dozens of machines and thankfully not many people abuse them so badly. I'll always have room for at least one, and have three at the moment (four, including one in for a check-up for a friend). IMO if everyone who sews used one of these, they would buy one. No other domestic sewing machine compares for stitch quality and how easily it goes through fabric.

    Hello. There are lots of great vintage sewing machines and none are better or superior than others at doing EVERYTHING. I find that it really depends on what your sewing needs and projects are. The 66 can tolerate somewhat heavier thread weight and will sew thru thicker layers. The 201's are renown for their artisinal like stitch quality. Quilters and gown sewers will prefer the 201. Heavy canvas/upholstery sewers will likely favor the 66, but I know there are exceptions to each of my comments. Both are wonderful and legendary Singer models. The best way to know which is better for YOU is to do some test sewing on each. Good luck!

Keep in mind that the machines was usually purchased later than the year stated. But the parts were from then. It helps to date properly.
