Singer 201-2 Demonstration to show full function and condition

Maybe the best sewing machine ever made.
One of the strongest home sewing machine with the "potted" motor. All steel gears and no belts. Black
It has a very good stitch length adjustment system that includes reverse. Beautiful straight stitches.
I put a new winder tire on, grease and oil throughout and some minor adjustments and this baby is sewing flawlessly.
Made in the USA,1957

Looks like my grandma’s machine. It was so smooth and yet the strongest sewing machine I’ve ever used. My grandma was a dancer and made all her own costumes. My grandpa was a repair man so he kept it going. Watching you sew and tinker with it brings back good memories.

I have my mom's. It was a very expensive machine in it's day. (Mine is 1949). I have the original paperwork, receipt, instructions and several (very expensive for the time) original attachments. My grandmother took out a six month loan to buy it for my 17 year old mom. I love the machine.

I own a singer 201-2. I had a great service man in New Jersey but now that I retired to Puerto Rico, I need a complete overhaul. Tension service. My foot pedal is attached under the machine which sews with a knee lever. I love my machine. My repairman gave me a new plug and cables for it. He said my machine was a treasure find for $150! It was mint condition

I found one of these machines on a junk pile years ago and bought it for $5. It was in excellent condition but the motor was slow so I thought it needed a new motor. But I was wrong. All it needed was a little lubrication and it ran beautifully! I put it in a cabinet my mom had and use it occasionally. What a beautiful machine!

Dear, very useful is the system you have choosen to show repair and maintenance of Singer sewing machine , I would like more if you set it on varing modified version machines from 1945 to present designed . Singer and Puff are only Companies introduced Swing Machines as I know. Once purchased these standards machines are just the limit of good Machine. I have Singer since 1949 , just a few mooving parts might have been replaced one time but it's stich and service is better than any other Brand machine of present time. In average above 1.5 Hrs. a day is its use minimum. I look forward watching more vedios . thanks

  • @TheMinot60
    @TheMinot609 жыл бұрын

You can download a free manual from singer. This machine takes standard needles sold today inserted with the flat facing left ( I think!) Threaded from right to left through the eye different from most other machines on the planet. Singer and smetchz are both excellent brands. For leather you want a larger size 16 or 18 and they generally say leather for the sharp point and larger scarf and eye for a stronger thread. Your regular foot will probably work. Sometimes scotch tape will help it glide better if it's not gliding nicely. This machine can handle the heavy stuff for an occasional job but they really aren't designed to do hours of it forever. The motor will burn up if you are trying to do lots of leather for an extended time.

minot60 The first thing to do is replace the original motor and replace it with a 3/4 to 1 amp replacement. The machine was overbuilt in all areas but the wiring. I suggest a full disassemble and rebuild. This allows one to learn how the machine works. Unfortunately most don't or are not able to perform this simple task, thus the reason for the "machines for dummies" made since the 60's. I hope people read your advice and follow it, unfortunately I rebuild so many machine era products.

+Bob Mays So much fun to rebuild! I rewired mine from the motor out when I got it with tutorials off the internet. It was gratifying to see her come back to life. I don't need a bigger motor for quilting and dressmaking. The 60 year old original is still the fastest stitcher of any machine I've owned.

It brings back memories of my childhood in Haïti where the women in my family (mom, aunts and the uncles too ) use such a sewing machine to sew on and earn their living sewing.

Our family Singers are also treadle machines, great-grandma’s or great-great grandma’s machines. It would be great to be able to sew on them. They have the long skinny bobbins, I remember them being a bit hard to get consistent flow without bobbin snags, but I did better in shop than sewing, so that goes for any sewing machine.

I'm just wondering if I should search for a 201. I have a 66 with back stitch.... What is/are the advantage(s) of a belt drive 201 vs a belt drive 66 with back stitch? I'm genuinely curious.

The 201's are inherently a smoother running machine than a 15 because they are a rotary hook machine.

At 1:41, winding the bobbin, the spool of thread should be placed on the lower spool pin instead of the upper spool pin.

Your are correct and I also see no issue with this method. Remember, there is more than one way to get to the grocery store.😃

As nice as the machine looks with the gear drive, and potted motor, and they were as expensive new as they came. My grandmother bought one for her only daughter, who sewed professionally. My aunt gave it back because the drop in bobbin would occasionally what she would call "Tangle and Swear" It sat in my grandmothers house until she died. Nobody wanted it. All my aunts ended up with Pfaff 130's.. In my opinion The Singer 319 was a much better machine, not only did it Zigzag, but it has a bobbin case to cut down on the tangles that the 66, 99, and the 201 always had. The 221 has a bobbin case and is small, but the 15 which was manufactured from Wheeler and Wilson, through Singer and as Asian machines for over a hundred years would be my choice if I had to settle for a straight stitch machine. A Singer Athena was my first computer sewing machine, Drop in bobbin was unacceptable, I went back to my 306 in a treadle cabinet as it sewed smoother and faster, but it was supposed to have special needles, I have used the 130 needles without any problems.

Great video! I just purchased a Singer 201-2 that seems to have been with the original owner’s family. It works, but it is a bit dull. Do you have any suggestions for what material to use to clean it and to make it shiny like yours? Thank you very much!

You can clean and shine up the black finish on it by using a soft cotton cloth and put sewing machine oil onto the cloth and just start gently rubbing the machine with it. It will clean the surface of your machine and make it shiny again. After you done that you can rub the machine down well with a clean dry cloth and you can give it a couple coats of good car wax.

The Singer 201 sewing machines take a class 66 bobbin and regular 15 x 1 needles. You should be able to find needles anywhere. Bobbins are common however you may need to find those on Amazon or Ebay.
