I was gifted today a cabinet that I had admired. Low and behold when I looked inside. A beautiful WORKING 201…. Model year is 1938. I am truly grateful. An older sister for my 1940 featherweight.

Absolutely NOTHING sews a better top stitch than a 201-2. Smooth, quiet, and powerful. Once you sew on one, you'll want your very own.

I’ve just inherited a 201 from my mum, who received it new on her 21st birthday in 1964. It’s in its own table and I was unsure how to thread it, as I hadn’t used it myself since 1976. I’ve had it overhauled and it’s working perfectly. I love it, just made a padded bag and quilted without any need for a walking foot, the stitch is immaculately even. My mum made all our clothes and my dads shirts on this, I took up jeans and repaired horse rugs. A beautiful machine. A privilege to own. 💖 Thank you for the demo. Very helpful.

I love the way you backstitches rather than turn the webbing around. I've only thought of using backstitch to secure the beginning and end. I'm just getting to know my 201k 2 which was brought to me yesterday.

So glad I found this site...hope you are still posting in 2019...I have had my aunt's AK series singer machine several years..know so little..I have let it sit alone for past 3 years because although I only do simple straight stitching on it, the machine suddenly lost all tension..personal tragedy caused me to give up for the time being...but now I hope to correct the problem and start enjoying sewing again. There is no longer a local Singer repair center in my area (it closed it's doors just about a year ago) Thankfully every manual and the basic attachments are still in the drawers and I will begin to peruse and acquaint myself with this machine that seems to be quite a treasure..am looking forward to learning something or rediscover the excitement of sewing at home...I am nearly 75 yrs..no one in family is interested..except for me :) Thanks again!

Thanks so much for this video! I learned how to sew today on my wife's late Grandmother's Singer 201 (from 1941!). I've never used this (or any other) machine before and I completed my first project (a hammock in 1.6 oz, lightweight diamond grid nylon "Hyper-D). I'm astonished at how smoothly this machine runs. Without this basic video, I was completely lost. Didn't know how to thread the machine, much less load the bobbin. I ran a couple passes on some scrap material and was amazed how well this machine performs. I have some more ambitious projects on the horizon, now! Thanks again

I have a 1938 model 201. It is a beast. I love the machine. I also have a brand new Janome C30, and the 201 is just as smooth and quiet as the Janome. I also own a white's machine in a cabinet. It has a broken bolt on the motor belt tension, and I plan on fixing that really soon. The white's is kind of noisy when it was running. I love that machine also. My 201 is in a plastic travel case, but soon I plan to build a large cabenet for it for the purpose of doing upholstery with it.

We already have a round 12 machines, but i would love one of these guys. From what i saw it is a super piece of machine, and would make a good addition to the 3 industrials we already have. The problem is where to get one in South Africa, since yardsales/garage-sales are scarce, and buying ons like this from a dealer will cost me an arm and a leg, and i need both for sewing.

Last summer I picked up a 201-2 with it's original cabinet. Sew Pro's in El Cajon refurbished as It needed new electrical. I have several, very expensive machines. BabyLock, Jenome and Viking. I love to sew with this 1950 Singer 201-2 the most. My question is. The 66 bobbins that I have recently bought seem too tight. The older ones that came with the machine slip in so nicely. Have you had this problem? Same problem with my Singer 99, the new bobbins coming from Singer class 66 bobbins are too tight. Any suggestions or comments from your experience.

Hello! So nice to find your videos! I bought a 201-2 ( looks like the one you have in the video ) people tells me for sure is this one, but it doesn’t have the little plate that say so.my problem is it was neglected ( is running , is cleaned, oiled, etc). But when I try to fill the bobbin , the little wheel sometimes stop and I need to move the lever a little bit , so it can finish filling the bobbin. Do you have a video that help me with this? I will really appreciate it! ( oh the little rubber wheel is the original )

The Singer 201 frustrates me every time I use. Mostly because I seldom use it. So when I pull it out, it's like learning all over again getting the top and bobbin thread set up. More often than not, it takes an hour to get it all sorted out . Always frustrating.

Is there any chance you could help me identify a vintage Singer machine? I'm in Australia, and purchased the machine several years ago from a man who said his mother bought it sometime in the 1950s and used it to sew clothes for the family for years. From the serial number, it's a 201K, but it looks different from the 201Ks I've seen online. It's fully functioning, I think, and it doesn't matter much if I know what it is exactly, but I am thinking of replacing parts of it (power cord might need replacing, and that info might come in handy.) Thanks beforehand, in case you could eyeball a photo or two of it and let me know what you think.

Great videos! I was wondering if you wouldn't mind helping me with a little feedback. I am debating between purchasing one of these 2 machines listed. 201-2 in a cabinet (w/light in front / Rolls Royce) 301 - long bed (wanted the short bed to fit in a cabinet but only found a long bed for sale.) I will be sewing high end women's dresses. I am not a professional sewer, so I'm looking for a machine that is easier to control (slower) for better precision. Stitch quality is very important. And would prefer the machine that is more on the quiet side. Portability would be nice but quality is more important. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you :)

FYI , I have both. I love my 301, and it sounds like a model train. The 201-2 is a dream to drive and purrs like a kitten. I hope this helps. hahaha, no matter which you get, much success to you. With your ambition, and if you want to stay vintage, consider a 401. I have a 221, 201, 201-2, 301a, 404, CG-550, 600, 600e. a160th and a 9960, all set up a little different with lots of various presser feet. "man does not live by lockstitch alone".

The motor on this 201-2 is surprisingly no quieter than my 201-3. I was thinking the potting would make it quiet. Apparently, the only benefit to the direct drive is no belt. For sewing within the capabilities of this machine I think either machine would work just as well. The direct drive makes things unnecessarily complicated.
