The last part about understanding kreng jai is probably the best piece of advice for any foreigner living in Thailand. It's hard to define but I think of it as behaving in a way that considers how your behavior impacts others. Something like consideration or empathy. It's really what makes Thailand such a great place.

เกรงใจ “considerate” for example if you arrive at a hotel and they promptly help you with your luggage you would respond with เกรงใจ

Excellent interview. Interesting to learn that even Asians must figure out Thailand's culture. What I observed during 20 yrs of visiting Thailand and doing business with Thai, is that many Thai males are hot blooded and thus even Thai male managers tend to have a female assistant to communicate with staff or business partners.

Great interview, these are great insights to share with the community. Unfortunately, most foreigners starting a business in Thailand learn these illogical concepts the hard way and it is costly. Doing business in Thailand as a non Thai is doing business in Hard Mode compared to your own country.

As a 40ish westerner that has been growing up eating Nestle products, I can tell the quality of the Nestle products and overall products distributed by big companies kept degrading over the years despite evolution of technologies, agriculture and researches... This just can not be a pure hasard as everything has this same sugar taste with tasteless flavor.

By bigger government, higher taxes, wealth transfers minus a 50% cut? Those are western socialist ideas that destroy an economy everywhere it's tried. If you don't like traditional Thai culture, vote with your feet. There are several equal outcome oriented communist countries nearby to choose from. Too many white knight expats try to import the misery they fled from.

With the upcoming worldwide income tax, potentially around 35% as they currently tax remitted income and plan to tax all worldwide income, I am personally preparing to leave as soon as possible. If you are interested in purchasing amazing condos in Phuket, please contact me. Thailand is an incredible place, but it will become too expensive for me after this change. Thank you 🙏

If Thailand strengthens the public education system, teaches other languages, Chinese, English in the schools, strengthen students math skills, teach children not to just give up and to look for solutions and talk to others for solutions then companies may want to invest in Thailand. Thailand lacks an abundance of talented people. Businesses are more global and competing across broad regions.
