When I was growing up we watched this show every week, all my friends did too. There's none to compare to Mitch Miller.

Boy, you have to really do some inventive searching on KZread to find all his songs! He had a beautiful voice! And a wonderful personality on Sesame Street! I watched him when my son was young and then with my granddaughters. Can't believe he's gone!

What a beautiful voice Bob McGrath had. I did not realize how talented he was when he was on Sesame Street singing "Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood"..

The classic song that Bob McGrath was singing is called, Silver Threads Among the Gold. Of course, on Sesame St., he wasn't singing with his full vocal skills the way he was here.

The Mitch Miller Show a huge blast from the past of wonderful television history.... These were the days when the family sat together to watch wonderful programs and enjoy the shows as you participated.... As a child I could sing all these songs and my Mama was so proud that I loved these shows, we still watched them after my Daddy passed..... Thanks for bring back such wonderful memories of my childhood, I enjoy watching these clips from the past which are such a treat from todays dribble...

I'm 63 yrs old now & I remember when I was little hearing my grandmother singing the praises of 'Sing Along With Mitch'. She was born about seven years before the turn of the 20th century. So now I've heard the music, I understand why she liked it. The twenties and thirties were her era. May God bless you, Eadie.

Bob McGrath has. In fact, his Sesame Street record "Sing Along with Bob" was a tribute to Mitch Miller - had to have been!

in the 1st part, i got a glimpse of a dude & thought, "hey, i KNOW that guy!" now, the announcer said, "bob mcGrath", & i thought, "that's who it is! bob, from SESAME Street!!" ha-ha-ha .... x^D .... what a kick in the pants x^)

Thanks so much for this and other Miller posts. Not only are they so enjoyable, they also give us a place to gather and remember this musical genius, who not only led this program, but for many years ran Columbia Records transforming it from a 3rd rate outfit to the leading label in the country. He helped guide the careers of Frankie Laine, Tony Bennett, Rosie Clooney, Guy Mitchell, Patti Page, the Four Lads, Teresa Brewer and many others. He had a profound effect on 20th century music.

Me and my mother watched Mitch Miller faithfully and I will always remember the birthday party thrown for Leslie Uggams when she turned 19 (I think).

Bob was my inspiration to sing when I was a child!!

All I have to say is THANK YOU FOR SHARING THESE MEMORIES!!! I was just telling my sweetheart that as a child I dressed up as Mitch Miller for halloween, to the point of using a lot of eyebrow pencil borrowed from my mother and a few hairs my dog so generously donated, (yes, I got my a** blistered), the kids had no clue, but I didn’t get any raisins or rocks, I got awesome candy!!! What an awesome flashback! Again, thank you for these awesome shares. (Take that Britney! This is live television!)

Bob McGrath was a "featured singer" on the program from 1962 through '64; he first appeared as a last-minute substitute for an "Irish tenor" on a St. Patrick's Day theme show, and became a regular performer shortly afterwards. Today, of course, most people know him from "SESAME STREET"- and yes, "Mary Poppins" (6:46) was going into re-release in the summer of '66 [normally, Disney usually waited about seven years to reissue their "classic" movies to theaters, but "Mary" made so much money...].

MARY POPPINS was released in September 1964. My mother took us to see the movie during Easter break in 1965. We all enjoyed the movie. Perhaps the reason Walt Disney had it aired so soon on television was because he wanted to host it before he died. He passed away in December 1966. In 1966, Walt Disney was also working on THE JUNGLE BOOK, but he passed away before it was completed.

I knew him from Sesame Street & indeed I had no idea he could sing like this!

I remember the program as a small child. I ennjoyed it then and always wondered what became of Mitch. A long life is the true reward of a good lfe. You will always be remembered

Victor Griffin's rendition of Ida is just great. A wonderful salute to the legendary Eddie Cantor and the great pioneer minstrel man Eddie Leonard who wrote the song in 1903. And that saxophobia is just great as well.

my grandfather who passed on a year or two before I came along was featured in one of ealiest shows, It would be nice to actually get to see him , other than in still pics

We've been singing some of Mich Miller's songs when I was in elementary grades way back in the Philippines & also hearing them in radio.I love them songs

I hope that someone will keep these songs alive. It would be a shame for them to die and our children and grandchild not to ever hear them.

At the beginning of part two, do you recognize Bob McGrath of Sesame Street fame? What a wonderful voice. I met him in the 80s when I took my son to a bookseller, where Bob was on tour promoting his new music cassette of children's songs. Nice man.

That first guy reminds me of Joe Feeny from Laurence Welk who did my wild Irish rose multiple times

Mom and dad would watch this every week.

The instrumental at 7:48, as Mitch identified it, is "Saxophobia", "technicolor'. The real Rudy Wiedoeft (whose famous composition this saxophonist is recreating) died in February 1940.

"Bill Bailey" is about a woman who wants her gigolo back. She'll do the dishes and cooking and pay the rent! 😆

I remember back in the day everyone sang along, even in the taverns.

For anyone who may care, Eddie Leonard and his version of the song Ida are on youtube. Just do a search on the name Eddie Leonard. Leonard was a true pioneering giant and in his wake came Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor and Georgie Jessel, among others. .

Just learned from a musician friend that the name of the saxophonist is Vincent J. (Jimmy) Abato who had played with the Glenn Miller band. Obviously he was a great talent. The name Mitch mentions while introducing the tune is that of the song's composer.

@Supergungun We kids loved it too. My cousins and I had no idea of what was "cool"; we put on shows and sang freely with Mitch. Years later we became singers; one of us in opera. :)

as a young boy in the 1960s I remember watching mitch miller on tv , down the hill from where I lived there was a good radio station wmba 1460 on your radio dial . they played atleast 4 mitch miller songs a day .no more good music on the radio just too much right wing talk .

This show actually made it to Australia back in the sixties. With vocalists and insrumentalists performing note perfect at the top of their game ;...it's got me tossed as to how it comes out sounding so bland and tasteless.
