Simulation of a Nuclear Blast in a Major City

Фильм және анимация

A collaboration between documentary filmmaker Neil Halloran and Nobel Peace Prize - Research and Information, this short data-driven film simulates a nuclear blast in a major city in order to tally the estimated deaths that would result. Using data from leading researchers and highlighting present day technology developments, the film illustrates the very real danger nuclear weapons still pose to humanity and life on Earth.

I'm in a major city and probably within the 2 kilometer radius of the center and I think in such a scenario I'd really not want to be in the 2% of survivers during impact (small chance is still a chance). Depending on how much time I'd have until impact (if whatever bomb that would've been used was noticed from a distance) I'd either drive to ground 0 to be instantly vaporized or, if I have more time, drive as faar away as possible. I really hope something like this never happens

If you in the zone of 20 psi shock-wave (for 800kt surface detonation this would be the radius of 2 km), which levels concrete buildings, yeah even going to a basement or underground shelter gives only slight chances of survival. However, for the zone of 5 psi shock-wave (2 - 4.25 km), this is really like dealing with a powerful tornado. Crawling under a desk or bed even not the first choice, is not entirely that stupid, especially considering chances are that's all there might be time for. It won't protect you from the destructive blast, if you are lucky it might offer some hope for collapse though. In any case for sure, it is better than nothing. There is an online tool allowing calculating zones for different strength warheads: nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/ By the way,... 1:24 quote: “hundreds of times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima”. I remember in old days 20kts was quoted as the yield of both Nagasaki and Hiroshima detonations. Today some sources quote 18kts, while some 15 kt for Hiroshima and 21kts for Nagasaki. No matter which number we stick with, 800 kt blast is 40-53 times more powerful than Hiroshima bombing. Not “hundreds of times”.

This quote both symbolizes the absolute beauty of the human condition but yet how meaningless the progression could end if one man were to make it his goal to end humanity. Humanity is stupid in the regard we allow our preferences to cloud judgment; but yet without them, one could argue we would not progress as a civilization.

It's amazing to me I've never seen fallout shelters actually talked about for their purpose. It's always people saying you went in there so your bodies were out of the way, no mention of outside the immediate death zone needing to avoid radiation.
