"If You Don't Know Me By Now" is a soul ballad originally written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and recorded by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes in 1972. The song gained significant popularity and became a classic in the soul genre.
Simply Red, a British band led by singer Mick Hucknall, covered the song in 1989 for their album "A New Flame." Their version was a major international success, reaching number one on the charts in several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom.
The song's lyrics explore themes of love, trust, and understanding in a relationship. It's characterized by its emotional delivery and soulful instrumentation, featuring prominent use of strings and a powerful vocal performance by Mick Hucknall.
Overall, "If You Don't Know Me By Now" remains one of Simply Red's most recognizable songs and is often considered a classic of the late 1980s and early 1990s music scene. Its enduring popularity has led to numerous covers and adaptations by various artists over the years.

Yes, Olliwoodda. When I hear all the rap based on samples I think, "I'll just listen to the original". Why show any appreciation for an artist who loves a song or artist enough to pay a tribute? I keep my mind closed like you.

People who didn't live through the 70's may have never sought out the original without this tip of the hat. I think it stands on its own because of the delivery. Of course, the timelessness of the lyrics, that can apply to struggling couples no matter what decade.

I don't disagree with Olli on this one. It is an incredibly iconic song and I kept expecting Mick Hucknall to break off one of those choruses with a really soulful and powerful vocal like we heard in "Holding Back the Years." But he must have wanted to stay faithful to the original out of respect. His vocal is still smooth as Irish butta and honestly I haven't heard the original in ages, but it does sound like a very straightforward rendition.

When the video for the song was made, the singer, Steve Winwood, was around 18 years old. By that age, he had ALREADY performed with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley.

I don't agree w/Ollwooda too often but on this one I agree. The sound is almost too similar. Both are good but it is so close to the original that I might as well go to that one. I can think of artists like Barbara Streisand and Gladys Night singing "Memories". BOTH ARE KILLER. Barbara's was the original and will always be HERS ( made famous from a movie) but hearing Gladys with her unique power and style made her version equally powerful. I can love both for different reasons!

Hey, have you guys ever heard of the artist Dave from the U.K? He is a young black rapper would be the technical term, but he is a unique creature which I've never heard anyone like him for his age. He has a album called "Psychodrama" released in 2019 I believe. And he did a song called "Black" Live at the Brit awards is the performance to watch very powerful. I would love to hear your feedback on it. I think you'll definitely want to go down the rabbit hole of Dave, who is now on his third album and and it would be nice to hear your Feedback on his very unique poetic Style of rapping as it's more of a storytelling style If you check him out, then I'll recommend more songs but he definitely has grown over the years and especially if you listen to him in album order to see the order of the album, so you can see his growth. Once again, his name is Dave from the UK rapper.

I guess that’s like saying Dolly Partons song-version to Whitney Houston’s song-version… we like the song-version we like 🤷‍♀️ both the original and the remakes are/were phenomenal, but if you have a choice to choose, you choose the song-version you like best! I personally think “some” people get a little upset when someone has a different opinion on which version of a song they like and it’s not the same version they’d prefer… no biggie in my opinion! This is exactly why it’s enjoyable to watch reactions and it shows the difference in generations! Js imo 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 thanks for sharing, as always I enjoyed everyone’s take on this song ❤️ although my pick is Simply Red 😉

Olliwood, from watching this channel, in my opinion, you look like you're just along for the ride knowing that these reaction channels can make a boatload of $$$ from Google, and rightfully so, you want your cut. But for this channel to work to make that kind of paper, you have to be a team player. The other two cats are into it and articulate their appreciation for old-school music, and they have to drag an opinion out of you that is often negative. People like myself and your other subs watch these channels to connect with like-minded people who love this music. Reaction channels that react to old-school music with hundreds of thousands of subs like Rob Squad Reacts(560k subs)are so enthusiastic about discovering old classics. Olliwood take a look at past videos of yourself. You don't look like you want to be there. I want this channel to succeed, that's why I'm a subscriber. More subs=more $$$. This is not a criticism It's an observation.

Great rendition, real good. It takes cast iron balls to try and cover a Teddy Pendergrass song and a HUGE 🏀 🏀 set of cast iron balls to especially cover this song in particular!! No one can out do Teddy P. He’s the man!! You have your top tier guys, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Sam Cooke, Otis Reading, Smokey Robinson, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Barry White . Every one is phenomenal and of course I couldn’t list them all but I really don’t think anyone can top Teddy Pendergrass!! He is the most soulful, emotion filled and powerful singer of the bunch. I put Al Green a close second and then it real complicated and extremely difficult to pick the best!! Still I got to give it to Teddy P. No one brings forth the genuine emotion and feel of a song like this guy did. Case closed!

I can tell from Olliwoodda's expression that he really did not like this. I am not sure what the issue was & I really do hope its not the skin tone of Mick Vs Teddy. But when the only payday some of these classic artists got was from a modern cover then the list of classic 60s, 70s artists begging someone to bring them into the light is bound to be endless. Yes its close to the original but its intended to be. Its not a sample or a rework its a cover & as such things go a very popular one.

Two of them, the third has nothing much to say. Perhaps he should stick to the rappers that sample everyone else’s music. He comes across as uninterested, disengaged or even bored. The other two gentlemen seem to be true music lovers and give a true and honest critique regarding all genres.

He may seem that way, but I've been watching these guys long enough to know you're wrong. I felt that way at first and I was wrong. And why should he stick to rappers? Because he's black? Thats an ugly thing to suggest. Music, ALL MUSIC, is for everyone. Music doesn't see color. All three have a keen insight and when he sounds negative, he's just being honest. Simply Red's version IS A LOT like the original.

I'm into originals. except the likes of jimmy barnes and john farnham are miles better than the original. I like panteras version of planet caravan over black sabbaths version. no quarter I like the led zep original I dont like tools that much even tho im a huge tool fan. seems with these other big bands they are better off using their own stuff. simply reds version is way better imo actually in everything the does, its almost simpler than the original cos the song itself is so cut up and clean. Then you can have a remake turn out to be its own thing like john farnhams version of beatles 'help' which is so different from the original but its almost better, but its just a different song altogether u cant compare cos they are so different.
