"If You Don't Know Me By Now" is a soul ballad originally written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and recorded by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes in 1972. The song gained significant popularity and became a classic in the soul genre.
Simply Red, a British band led by singer Mick Hucknall, covered the song in 1989 for their album "A New Flame." Their version was a major international success, reaching number one on the charts in several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom.
The song's lyrics explore themes of love, trust, and understanding in a relationship. It's characterized by its emotional delivery and soulful instrumentation, featuring prominent use of strings and a powerful vocal performance by Mick Hucknall.
Overall, "If You Don't Know Me By Now" remains one of Simply Red's most recognizable songs and is often considered a classic of the late 1980s and early 1990s music scene. Its enduring popularity has led to numerous covers and adaptations by various artists over the years.

Bringing the songvto a new "generation" Different audiences.
Yes, Olliwoodda. When I hear all the rap based on samples I think, "I'll just listen to the original". Why show any appreciation for an artist who loves a song or artist enough to pay a tribute? I keep my mind closed like you.

Agree. He is so disrespectful
Every song of Simply Red is good.
Ollie dose not appreciate great artist he was and still is loved world wide
People who didn't live through the 70's may have never sought out the original without this tip of the hat. I think it stands on its own because of the delivery. Of course, the timelessness of the lyrics, that can apply to struggling couples no matter what decade.
If you stray too far from the original then ppl slice you for that too, can't win.....Mick's voice is just different enough from Teddy's to make it distinctive 💚🎵🎶
Okay there's nobody that sings like Teddy Pendergrass and of course this is a Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes classic but honestly I love simply Reds version just as much😊😊😊😊 have a great Independence Day tomorrow from Toronto
Nice opening to the show, guys! ! Mick was paying homage to the original. It was respectful and soulful.
Mick Hucknall is just a flat-out great vocalist.
Sunrise by Simply Red is a must to listen to!
Nobody did it like Teddy Pendergrass but this was respectable
Another good one is Moneys Too Tight To Mention

Yes
I don't disagree with Olli on this one. It is an incredibly iconic song and I kept expecting Mick Hucknall to break off one of those choruses with a really soulful and powerful vocal like we heard in "Holding Back the Years." But he must have wanted to stay faithful to the original out of respect. His vocal is still smooth as Irish butta and honestly I haven't heard the original in ages, but it does sound like a very straightforward rendition.
This so very awesome. I am sure Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes would be so very proud! Love your reactions!
Simply Red - *You Got It* - my favorite Simply Red song
Mick did a beautiful duet with Chaka Kahn under the direction of Quincy Jones many many years ago that was stunning.
"Make it your own".... Says a rapper who samples other artists work and makes it "their own" by destroying it..... Brother, PUHLEEZE‼️
One of favorite bands from the 80's Mick is a beautiful singer❤
Cant wait ! 🎶🎵💗Your in for a treat Simply Red is ABSOLUTE 🔥
I think people need to realize that performers have others that influence them. Not like any of use don't sing our favorite songs around the house. I think its a beautiful thing that artists do songs that their gen may not know. 😊
BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS...You've Made Me So Very Happy
I really like the way you talk about the video after it plays. Thank you.
this is song one of greatest ever to me simplyred is put down on this one here .
Simply Red The right thing is a must listen.
You should listen to Simply Red's Stars next.
Ollie don't be a hater😮😮😮😮
The talent and the artistry. These bands were amazing.
Facts.... 😊 I loved it. Hit home. ❤
My favourite is the live version of you make me feel brand new - his voice 😊
😢it's sooo so deep to my soul
My favourite band ever , Micks voice is unique 💜💛💚UK,
I really want to see all your faces if you watch "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" by Spencer Davis Group. When the video for the song was made, the singer, Steve Winwood, was around 18 years old. By that age, he had ALREADY performed with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley.
Beautiful.
Great reaction. Thank you! You should have a listen to their "For Your Babies". Absolutely amazing.😁
Absolutely rock with 2 of the 3 of you..
Mick assolutamente meraviglioso, voce straordinaria ❤❤❤
Love this song, whoever sings it.
Once again , your man Ollie is bored to death listening to this song , he was obviously looking at his emails during the video, yawning etc....., love corey and fenom reaction !! In my opinion Ollie brings down your reactions, makes me want to unsuscribe when he starts talking !!
So good
beyond blue-eyed soul. It's ginger-haired soul!
Cory baby I love the whiskers man
There is a great live version out there too
Please do the live version. He can really sang

"Sang" is the correct form of the verb for this usage.
I can't thank you Guys enough for your reaction!
Listen to you make me feel brand new, by Simply Red live
Man! This takes me back! I was 14 years old working in the cookie place in our mall!!
simply red brilliant play the original im sure i will remember both are great
Patti Labelle gives another rendition of this song. It sounds like Simply Red used that more as their example than the original by the Blue Notes. I love all versions of this song.
I love all versions...Patti LaBelle also!
I love Teddy Pendergrass, have you played “ Close The Door “ by Teddy? I like this song with Mick singing too. 🧡🧡🧡
🌹❤️You Guys are Awesome and Respectful ❤️love this Song Love The Memories that came with this Song I would really like to hear The Original too Thank You Guys 🌹❤️
“Come to My Aid” & “Something Got Me Started “ are dope by dis group…
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥😎
He is better live
Another great soul singer is Allen Stone! “ Unaware” Live From His Mother’s Living Room. Just saw him Saturday. PHENOMENAL
Yea. Simply Red did some great covers. Another cover I think you may like is Simply Red singing a cover of The Valentine Brothers " Moneys Too Tight To Mention". More up tempo than this one and still great
Sure, maybe you guys don't always agree 100%, but you're still one of the very best reactions out there. You guys do it right. Don't change.
Amen about Olli!!!!
I don't agree w/Ollwooda too often but on this one I agree. The sound is almost too similar. Both are good but it is so close to the original that I might as well go to that one. I can think of artists like Barbara Streisand and Gladys Night singing "Memories". BOTH ARE KILLER. Barbara's was the original and will always be HERS ( made famous from a movie) but hearing Gladys with her unique power and style made her version equally powerful. I can love both for different reasons!
Check out Simply red's cover of You make me feel brand new. Mick has such great range he covers both parts on that song.
TEDDY PENDERGRASS WAS IN BLUENOTES...HE SANG THIS SONG, I BELIEVE.❤❤❤❤❤
Hey, have you guys ever heard of the artist Dave from the U.K? He is a young black rapper would be the technical term, but he is a unique creature which I've never heard anyone like him for his age. He has a album called "Psychodrama" released in 2019 I believe. And he did a song called "Black" Live at the Brit awards is the performance to watch very powerful. I would love to hear your feedback on it. I think you'll definitely want to go down the rabbit hole of Dave, who is now on his third album and and it would be nice to hear your Feedback on his very unique poetic Style of rapping as it's more of a storytelling style If you check him out, then I'll recommend more songs but he definitely has grown over the years and especially if you listen to him in album order to see the order of the album, so you can see his growth. Once again, his name is Dave from the UK rapper.
This was the UK version of this
I suggest "Money's Too Tight to Mention" or "Sunrise" (he samples Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go for That") for your next Simply Red listen.
I guess that’s like saying Dolly Partons song-version to Whitney Houston’s song-version… we like the song-version we like 🤷♀️ both the original and the remakes are/were phenomenal, but if you have a choice to choose, you choose the song-version you like best! I personally think “some” people get a little upset when someone has a different opinion on which version of a song they like and it’s not the same version they’d prefer… no biggie in my opinion! This is exactly why it’s enjoyable to watch reactions and it shows the difference in generations! Js imo 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 thanks for sharing, as always I enjoyed everyone’s take on this song ❤️ although my pick is Simply Red 😉
The white guy from the U.K. did it his way, thankfully he wasn't going for a Teddy Pendergras imitation on this.

His name is Mick Hucknall.
Olliwood, from watching this channel, in my opinion, you look like you're just along for the ride knowing that these reaction channels can make a boatload of $$$ from Google, and rightfully so, you want your cut. But for this channel to work to make that kind of paper, you have to be a team player. The other two cats are into it and articulate their appreciation for old-school music, and they have to drag an opinion out of you that is often negative. People like myself and your other subs watch these channels to connect with like-minded people who love this music. Reaction channels that react to old-school music with hundreds of thousands of subs like Rob Squad Reacts(560k subs)are so enthusiastic about discovering old classics. Olliwood take a look at past videos of yourself. You don't look like you want to be there. I want this channel to succeed, that's why I'm a subscriber. More subs=more $$$. This is not a criticism It's an observation.

I agree he's acting like a child imo.
Could tell young un didnt like it from the start cos his face, he wasn't gonna give any credit zzzz .... our Manchester Mick Hucknall has a powerful voice ✌️🇬🇧 x
Ollie don't know what the .... he's talking about.
Olli open your ears
Corey: “Great rendition” Fenom: “Favorite version, but Teddy is top 5” Olliwood: “I don’t fuck wit’ dis”…….
Red hair soul
You gotta check out their song Sad Old Red
Ginger Peopel the Best Mick and ED Genius
Can't top the Stylistics! But he's good.
this was an excellent remake. Many times you hear one and have to change the music. Shinedown did an excellent remake of the Skynrd version of "Simple Man". Sound of Silence is one of the best remakes I've ever heard.
You should do chris stapletons cover of its a man's world
Love the comic cover in Fenom's background, what is that?

You should check out Korn doing "word up." A song they did to warm up. Company released it. It was good!!😂
I once heard on a radio program that artist would cover songs straight because, they would have to pay extra plus royalties if the original song was altered in any way
You have to do Teddy Pendergrass love TKO but the live version it is 5 or 6 minutes long if I remember and it is so phenomenal because it is alive and it wasn't long after that he had his car accident😢😢😢😢😢
Olli you on point I always thought he could have done more with it, but his voice is next level.
Two More Killer Covers: 1. Chris Cornell “Billie Jean” 2: UB40 “Falling In Love With You” ✌🏼& ❤️
Great rendition, real good. It takes cast iron balls to try and cover a Teddy Pendergrass song and a HUGE 🏀 🏀 set of cast iron balls to especially cover this song in particular!! No one can out do Teddy P. He’s the man!! You have your top tier guys, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Sam Cooke, Otis Reading, Smokey Robinson, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Barry White . Every one is phenomenal and of course I couldn’t list them all but I really don’t think anyone can top Teddy Pendergrass!! He is the most soulful, emotion filled and powerful singer of the bunch. I put Al Green a close second and then it real complicated and extremely difficult to pick the best!! Still I got to give it to Teddy P. No one brings forth the genuine emotion and feel of a song like this guy did. Case closed!
James Gang FUNK #49- react to it!!
I can tell from Olliwoodda's expression that he really did not like this. I am not sure what the issue was & I really do hope its not the skin tone of Mick Vs Teddy. But when the only payday some of these classic artists got was from a modern cover then the list of classic 60s, 70s artists begging someone to bring them into the light is bound to be endless. Yes its close to the original but its intended to be. Its not a sample or a rework its a cover & as such things go a very popular one.
Money's too tight to mention please react to their first ever hit
SAW TEDDY PENDERGRASS AT GREEK THEATER IN 80'S...HE WAS SO SEXY, SINGING GREAT, WOMEN TOSSING UNDERPANTIES ON STAGE!!! HEE DID A COUPLE DUETS WITH CHAKA KHAN...HEAVEN🙏
And to that point, a lot of the other "reactors" could learn a WHOLE LOT just by shutting up and watching you three at work. Again, you do it the right way. Awesome.

Two of them, the third has nothing much to say. Perhaps he should stick to the rappers that sample everyone else’s music. He comes across as uninterested, disengaged or even bored. The other two gentlemen seem to be true music lovers and give a true and honest critique regarding all genres.

He may seem that way, but I've been watching these guys long enough to know you're wrong. I felt that way at first and I was wrong. And why should he stick to rappers? Because he's black? Thats an ugly thing to suggest. Music, ALL MUSIC, is for everyone. Music doesn't see color. All three have a keen insight and when he sounds negative, he's just being honest. Simply Red's version IS A LOT like the original.
Great reaction !! Please check out *ANGEL* by them featuring *FUGEES* ! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hello from Germany 🙋♀
I kinda agree with Ollie. It's a great song. But not unlike the original. At all. ❤️✌️
It was a fine cover, however, do they have anything of their own? Thank you for the four important words, “it’s just my opinion”, about Teddy’s voice;) There aren’t many covers that are better than the original, however, in my opinion, YES cover of Paul Simon’s “America”, maybe not better than the word smith Paul, but it is a great prog rock cover!!
Sometimes the new version song is superior to the original song. Regarding Olli opinion, If there is no difference in tastes, there would be no different songs.
Agreed, ditch him
C,mon
Unlike Ollie I always want to hear a song the way I first hear it I usually don't like remakes but if you do i prefer it is done like the original because most likely there will be a different voice and that's all i can accept. Everyone is entitled to their opinion
I tell my kids that Mick is an albino black man.
I'm into originals. except the likes of jimmy barnes and john farnham are miles better than the original. I like panteras version of planet caravan over black sabbaths version. no quarter I like the led zep original I dont like tools that much even tho im a huge tool fan. seems with these other big bands they are better off using their own stuff. simply reds version is way better imo actually in everything the does, its almost simpler than the original cos the song itself is so cut up and clean. Then you can have a remake turn out to be its own thing like john farnhams version of beatles 'help' which is so different from the original but its almost better, but its just a different song altogether u cant compare cos they are so different.
