Small tip from a judoka: make sure to elevate your left arm higher when doing the throw. We used to teach people by saying, "you have to take a look at your watch". It will allow you to have more space to enter and create more power on your throw.

So just to clarify: pulling the opponents elbow up towards your pec, instead of down toward your hip?

But won't you lose grip then in no gi? I can imagine the benefit with a gi but it's hard to imagine with a sweaty no gi opponent.

@@glennx8986 I agree, in no-gi I try to grab a bit higher like btwn tricep & deltoid. They will flex & it's like divot for your hand 👌

@@kris3451 yes, with a gi it is easier, but if you get him leaning or pushing it works super well. Two judokas on my college team punished people with throws like this, uchi mata, and hari goshi

Correct me if I’m wrong, but by stepping behind you appear to be doing the exact thing you guys warned not to do in the wrestling for Jiu Jitsu course, because if he’s any good he’ll be able to throw you from that position utilising his overbook/wizza…? To my recollection, you highlighted that if you found yourself here without the inside position you should drop to snatch up a single… ?

This is where knowing what you're doing and why allows you to "break rules" to your advantage.

If you're intentionally doing it to get a reaction, and non committal with it, you should be relatively safe.

If he stepped there without bringing his opponents center of gravity back, he'd be in danger of whizzer pressure and throws - as you identified. So I think it's all about awareness of that danger (deliberate foot/knee position and center of gravity). He steps in knee behind knee, while using his head to take his opponents center of gravity backward, over that knee block. So the opponent only really has the option of stepping back to regain his balance.

If your technique is clean enough you can soften the landing of your training partner by holding back before the impact.

3 years Judo experience here. For me foot sweeps are far more timing oriented. If you’re tied up with someone like in this short, make them step and time your de ashi when they are mid-step. Easier said than done!
