Simple Platform Bird Feeder Works Wonders

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Note: For those worried about cleanliness and cleaning the easiest way to keep this clean on a daily basis to avoid using chemicals is first to not overfeed - put enough that will be eaten completely based on experience and simply use 4 thumb tacks to put a layer of newspaper or similar each morning and throw away the old one. Couldn't be a simpler way to keep a simple platform clean day-by-day or even twice a day if your really into it. Just wear disposable cheap plastic gloves and/or wash hands thoroughly afterward and deposit newspaper in the trash. A simple 2 foot or so long piece of 2 by 8, 10 or 12 inch pressure treated plank screwed down with a few wood screws on the deck rail and you have yourself a great little platform feeder. I'll be having a few other bird feeding ideas for the holidays in the coming weeks.

    Exactly, people waste so much money on fancy feeders, some spend more on the feeder than the foods. Some feeders are downright killing machines, eg nets on fatballs. It just needs to be easy to clean and access.

    Beautiful birds!!!! I love it! I mean I knew because of the thumbnail that there was a cardinal, but it’s funny because as soon as I heard the feeding chirp I knew WHEN the cardinals were coming 😄, it’s thanks to BYB that I know the term “feeding chirp” too 😊. And I’m glad to know the term, because even if it isn’t like a legitimate term, as a cardinal lover I often have to refer to the sound when talking about it/about cardinals. Thanks for a great video! I loved all these cute and beautiful birds! 🥰. It should be obvious I loved seeing the adorable cardinals in this video but also the other birds too! We don’t get the white Breasted nuthatch where I live- they’re beautiful.

  • @BirdsandGhibliFan

    @BirdsandGhibliFan

    If you have hanging feeders or seed cylinders, the birds that eat from them might dump some seeds on to the ground, which the ground feeders will happily clean up the mess. 😉 Or, if you’re comfortable with it, you can sprinkle some seeds on to the ground to make it somewhat easier for them to forage, or a tray.

    Diatomaceous earth food grade is at least a natural product that is cheap to offer as a dust bath or to use as an insecticide on wood, as long as it is kept dry. It also provides a source of minerals. I wouldn't use chemicals or tamper with the equilibrium by treating wild birds blindly for problems they may not have, everything has a side effect. You can kill the mites, fleas,worm, protozoas, the whole lot, but the sources (nests, other birds) will very likely just replenish the numbers the next day.

    When birds can perch directly onto seed like with your "platform" feeder, it too easily enables birds to deposit their all too often salmonella-contaminated droppings onto the seed that other birds will then ingest. It's one of the typical ways avian salmonellosis is contracted by birds, especially with finches. The disease also spreads easily from bird-to-bird in a flock and larger populations of birds flocks belong to. Did you happen to hear about the countless waves of avian salmoellosis resulting in huge mortality rates in Pine Siskins across the southern and western US this past winter of 2020-2021 ? The culprit was determined to be exposure for these affected birds to salmonella-contaminated droppings on bird feeders, or salmonella-contaminated bird seed they ingested. Why do you think they were telling people on one news broadcast after another to take down bird feeders? Platform bird feeders are among the most unsanitary bird feeders whether home-made like the one on your video, or one sold at retail. Platform feeders also easily enable birds of different species to intermingle with each other as they never would in the wild and pass pathogens across species. Backyard birding is a man-made hobby with too much man-made, avian disease-causing error built in, including ridiculous videos like this one that by default gives two thumbs up to dropping-harboring, avian disease-causing feeder designs.
