A simple pendulum is a basic physics system consisting of a mass (known as the bob) attached to a string or rod of fixed length. The bob is typically a concentrated mass, while the string or rod is assumed to be massless and rigid.
When a simple pendulum is displaced from its equilibrium position, it starts to oscillate back and forth under the influence of gravity. The motion of the pendulum is periodic, meaning it repeats itself in a regular pattern. The main factors affecting the motion of a simple pendulum are the length of the string and the acceleration due to gravity.
The time period of a simple pendulum is the time it takes for one complete oscillation or swing, which is the time it takes to move from one extreme position (such as the highest point on one side) to the other extreme position and back. The period depends only on the length of the pendulum and the acceleration due to gravity. A longer pendulum will have a longer period, while a shorter pendulum will have a shorter period.
Frequency of the pendulum is the number of oscillations per second. Frequency is the reciprocal of time period.
Simple pendulums are often used as a basic example in physics to study concepts like oscillatory motion, period, frequency, and the effects of length and gravity on the motion of a pendulum. They also have practical applications in various fields, such as timekeeping (e.g., grandfather clocks) and scientific measurements.
