Its 1989. I'm 14 years old, sitting in front of the radio 10'o clock at night, waiting for them to play this song so I can record it. Its 2024, I'm 48, this song popped up on my playlist as I was sitting and finishing up some tricky coding. Its 10'o clock. My son just came to say goodnight, he's 14. Full circle. This song is still as good as the first time I heard it.

Oh for sure. Lyrically and musically superb. Although the 80's had a huge amount of shite music, at least there was room for something this good to breathe. Listening to the music of today, I fail to see how a track like this would get off the ground, never mind reaching escape velocity.

What a fantastic tribute to play This song for someone from Belfast .
I feel every word of this song. i was born in N. Ireland, as a child growing up it was such a dark dark time, i want people to fully understand the great sadness and pain that time was, the good friday agreement brought a kind of peace, but when i look at some today playing with peace it makes me sick. I dont care any more about the whole orange and green thing, most people just want to live in peace with there neighbour. People think it will never go back to those dark times, but beleive me it could. Belfast to this day has so called peace walls every where, until those are not needed i think thats the true turning point. N Ireland has come a long long way, but some just want to play games with that hard won peace, i remember all the lives lost, well over 3,500 everyone of those lives must never be forgotten, i truely hope the clock never goes back.

Thank you for the moving and informative comment . just wanted to ask, when you refer to "people playing with peace", might brexit have something to do with that? Or is there a chance that Ireland could reunite? . . . or am I just a dreamer?
@chrismullan7191

@@ichhasseamerika Hi Bob. Brexit just sets things back, i think borders are mostly in peoples minds, some day the whole of Ireland will be one again, but it will only come about by peaceful means. Small groups will still try to get there point across by bombs and guns, but only brigs more pain and hate. The teens today in N Ireland get along far better and they are the hope, i think once all the old so called leaders are gone the better, i say that about both sides.

Simple Minds are a Scottish group I think. The song (based on She Moved Through The Fair - an Irish folk song) is about the troubles in Ireland, and so impacts on other nationalities. Plus the haunting melody and story behind words, would pull on the heartstrings
I grew up in this town...my town...i walked and played on that same hill where the boy and girl are shown running when I too was young... it was a happy place to grow up...even now I can be easily reduced to tears as I watch this wonderful video...and reflect on the tragedy that unfolded in that beautiful place....may such things NEVER be repeated in Ireland...land of enchantment and inspiration...my land.

I wish new generations would listen to this music and appreciate it more because this music had sense, a message, whilst nowadays you don't even know what you're listening to. I'm born in '94 and haven't had a chance to actually be there, at that time when this song was made and times when Ireland was engulfed by riots and wars but I can feel it through these songs and this pain is so realistic, I sometimes wish I was there at that time, trying to do something good, make a change. And I'm not even from out there, I'm from Serbia, but my heart always belonged in Ireland. I don't know why, but I felt that, even when I was 5 years old and didn't know what a country was. I hope I'll finally get a chance to visit it someday.

This song remains the best example I know of turning a traditional folk melody into something new and wonderful, that still completely respects the original tune. When one of my best Friends, invited me in 2009, to go to a concert I was skeptical. Until then I wasn´t familiar with these guys. I am glad that I had the chance to see them live. And learn about their music. Since then I am a big fan. This song is pure awesomeness.

To me, this song is an amazing testament of hard times for many back in the day in this area of our world. Brought to light by an amazing talented band. The story profound, the black and white video adds a contrast onto the band as they show footage of past times. Music should always be this good because craftsmanship like this no longer exists so keep this one very close to your heart! Brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it.
Only one word needed for this song, MASTERPIECE.
This is the most beautiful song … I remember this from my teens ..I m 56 and English but it means so much . Thank you x❤

That part where the music breaks down and he sings quietly "..life goes on..." - wow man that just gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Still the same feeling after so many years, what a masterpiece!
When my love said to me Meet me down by the gallow tree For it's sad news I bring About this old town and all that it's offering Some say troubles abound Some day soon they're gonna pull the old town down One day we'll return here When the Belfast Child sings again Brothers, sisters, where are you now? As I look for you right through the crowd All my life here I've spent With my faith in God the Church and the Government But there's sadness abound Some day soon they're gonna pull the old town down One day we'll return here When the Belfast Child sings again When the Belfast Child sings again So come back Billy, won't you come on home? Come back Mary, you've been away so long The streets are empty, and your mother's gone The girls are crying, it's been oh so long And your father's calling, come on home Won't you come on home, won't you come on home? You might also like Come back people, you've been gone a while And the war is raging, through the Emerald Isle That's flesh and blood man, that's flesh and blood All the girls are crying but all's not lost The streets are empty, the streets are cold Won't you come on home, won't you come on home? The streets are empty Life goes on One day we'll return here When the Belfast Child sings again When the Belfast Child sings again

Mam 49 lat, mieszkam w Polsce.Pamiętam gdy mój kraj w 1989 zmieniał się politycznie i namiastka życia z zachodu zaczęła się pojawiać. Pierwszy raz w życiu oglądałem wtedy MTV i ten utwór.

Remember when we were young and beautiful... so many years ago... O God I Remember
This has to be one of my favourite songs. I was lucky to be born in Belfast in the late 90s, as the Troubles were coming to an end. I've seen my fair share of sectarianism and ignorance in my country but I never experienced anything like my parents did during the Troubles. This song reminds me of all the needless suffering that occurred in my country. It also makes me unashamedly proud to be Northern Irish. I can only hope that as time goes by, the aftermath of the Troubles fades and we can truly be at peace.

In 1976 I read an article in readers digest about "the troubles" and it resonated. I became obsessed, my parents could not understand my interest. Later I discovered I was adopted and had Irish heritage on both sides. My grand parents were all from Belfast. And Grt Grandparents from the South. Still collating the family tree, very difficult when adopted. I have the Irish colouring, fair skinned, red head, fiery temper. I feel an affinity. This song helps me understand the turmoil and sorrow of NI. Emotional.
