Simple Journal cover using 2 1/2" Strip Scraps and a composition book! Fun to make and use all year!
Need a place to keep track of your projects and thoughts? This Journal is the perfect way to do it! Every January for the past three years I've made a Journal cover to put over a composition book. I use it all year long to record the projects I'm working on, family events, silly stuff, special moments, and anything I want to reflect on and remember in the future. I decorate it with fabric swatches, stickers, labels, tags, brochures, flyers, anything that will lay flat! It's kind of like scrapbooking but a little more private.
At the end of the year I take a look back at my year and see what I've accomplished and all the fun stuff that happened. I also flip through the previous years just to reminisce and I definitely see some things I am so glad to be reminded of and think about again. I encourage you to make one of these covers and get started!

There is something so nice about a quilted cover. Thanks for sharing your method and giving a glimpse of how you fill them! 💞
I started making these composition book covers in 2019. I primarily use it to document my sewing and quilting projects. I've made a lot and sold them at craft boutiques.
I just love this. Earlier this year my partner gave his 89-yr-old mother a composition book with the request to write down things about her life. I told him a plain ol' comp book was too boring, but she doesn't like him to "fuss" over her at all, so that's what he got. I'm totally going to make this cover for her book! Maybe it will make it more inspiring for her.🥰
The stripes are very effective. ❤ To the detriment of family history, I have never been a journalist or scrapbooker. My mom made me a covered journal in 2021. I do try to use it monthly to track my quilting progress, but I haven't logged my 2023 finishes from the end of the year.
I make junk journals and I use fabric to put on my base cover which is usually a cereal box or some other food box. I was just thinking today that I should make a patchwork quilted cover for my next journal. Thank you for sharing!
Great way to use precious scrap fabrics, I like the way you sewed the lining (bright green fabric) on the spine of the book cover, I would never have thought of that. All the best for 2024
Great scrappy journal - thank you for your video. I too think this one is the best one I've seen!
So much better than buying those expensive planner/journals! Thanks for sharing❤

I have watched many scrappy composition book journal videos and I think that this one is great. I have never seen the method sewing only on batting with the piece in the inside middle section but your tutorial makes sense. Happy new year.

What a great idea for my annual quilt planning journal. I’m often inspired by nature and this would be the perfect place to keep all of those ideas. The pockets are especially clever❤😊

What a great tutorial! I love keeping a journal and fill mine with memories and ephemera, too.
This is a great idea. Would make great Christmas gifts. Thanks so much
I have got to get on the journaling bandwagon. I keep a planner but its not quite the same thing. I love how you made the cover and of course the bonus was showing us your completed journals. Thank you so much!
What a through tutorial! Thanks so much, off to buy a notebook!
I use such a quilting notebook and made my cover from selvages. I use a notebook with gridded/graph paper so drawing bucks is easy! I like your “quilt as you go” technique!
Awesome video😊

Shelley, your days must consist of 28 hours. Just sayin. ❤❤
Can I use flannel instead of batting? I think it would make it a little flatter in the end for my use. Nice and clear tutorial, thanks!

You can sure give it a shot!
♥️♥️♥️
If using ribbon for closures, always be sure that you do a knot in the bottom of the ribbon .... if it never starts fraying, the chances of the ribbon turning ratty should be greatly decreased.
