Simple how to: Fiat Punto oil & filter change (service)

Simple how to: Fiat Punto oil & filter change
Draining and refilling oil and changing oil filter on a Fiat Punto (Mk2 and others).
You will need:
* Jack & axle stands, ramps, or some other safe way of getting under the car. Do not use the vehicle's spare wheel jack.
* Oil, preferred viscosity is 10w40 for most environments. The Fiat specification is semi-synth. Amazon links:
US: amzn.to/2n5Sw2k | UK: amzn.to/2lJS61n
* Replacement filter of the correct type and size. The easiest way to find the right size is to quote the vehicle to the merchant. OEM spec / quality preferred. Amazon links:
US: amzn.to/2ncru6g | UK: amzn.to/2nctQlI
* 12 mm hex key and cheat bar (you can use the wheel nut wrench from the spare wheel well), or 12 mm hex bit with a socket wrench.
* Oil filter wrench. Needs to be a thin band type if an all-the-way-round ring style; otherwise plier style. Thick chain wrap or similar will not fit. Try Amazon US: amzn.to/2YJPQK0 | UK: amzn.to/2xIOnbB
* Rags.
* Oil tray to drain old oil.
* Container in which to dispose of old oil.
* Funnel.

    Hi Craig, I'm actually replacing the Anti-Roll bar bushes on my Punto Active and was looking for the Jack points and came across this video of an oil change, little tip i thought might be useful in future, you have a funnel for putting new oil in, grab yourself an old funnel for taking it out too, just cut off some of the bendy end and feed your Allen key through it before you attach the tyre lever,you may need to cut the rim of the funnel if you use the short end of the allen key (best option due to more leverage) but not if you poke the long end (not ideal). That way you cut down on spillage & catch the bolt if you need to remove it completely without getting to much oil all over the place.

    Oil change with filter in each FIRE engine is possible without a jack. I changed the oil in Punto 2, Panda, GP, EVO. Engines from 1.1 - 1.4. Access to the filter is from both the top and the bottom.

    I like it that you didn't use any professional tools, your video encourages me to try it. I am just afraid that the oil filter will be stuck.

    +tomasmalin Try turning it, if it turns a little you will know you can remove it - it won't leak oil until it's removed further. So long as you don't pierce the can in trying, you can't really go wrong. My case was a bit unique, it hadn't been changed in a long time and was apparently over-tightened by previous mechanic. Usually they come off easily with an oil filter wrench.

    Thanks for this , got all the kit , nice bank holiday , fell at the first fence , the 12mm socket on mine is actually a 12 mm torx so ive been driving around for an hr and no one sells them separately just in sets for about £25 , so ill have another search around in morning , I'm assuming someone has replaced mine with an aftermarket because they appear to usually be as you say an allen/hex key, Dealers have them but they are closed today with it being a Bank Holiday

    it is a good idea to check the dipstick after you have the engine running for a minute . usually you need the add ore oil

  • @CraigsDIY

    @CraigsDIY

    You should check oil with the engine off for a while. Otherwise oil is distributed through the engine and the level under-reads, meaning you will overfill it.

    If i only change the Filter, does the whole oil comes out of the old Filter ?

  • @CraigsDIY

    @CraigsDIY

    7 жыл бұрын

    No, only the oil in the filter housing will come out so this is quite pointless. Why can't you change the oil?

  • @sirobb
    @sirobb8 жыл бұрын

    Nice, clear video but I would add the following. Prime the filter with fresh oil. This will reduce the time it takes to fill once the engine starts and reduces the risk of fuel starvation. After pouring in the oil, start and run the engine for 5 mins, do your leak checks at this point then turn off and let the oil settle and do any required top up BEFORE taking the car for a drive. Doesn't your drain plug have a removable seal/gasket? If so, I would renew that. They only cost a few pence.

  • @sirobb

    @sirobb

    Of course I meant oil starvation not fuel. 👍☺

  • @CraigsDIY

    @CraigsDIY

    Thanks. You can't pre-fill the oil filter because it installs horizontally. You could potentially prime it by removing ignition / fuel supply and cranking, but if you haven't left the motor sitting with no oil for a long time then there remains sufficient oil on surfaces throughout the engine that you won't do adverse wear.

    +Craig's DIY Car Jobs If you take a look through my recent videos where I do an oil and filter change on a Kawasaki Versys, I show how even horizontal filters can be primed with oil. You just fill it half to two thirds full and just leave it for a few minutes to let the oil soak into the filter media then screw it in place as normal. It's at around 5 minutes 30 secs. Hope that helps.

    You need to start the engine to let the oil filter fill and then check the level .

    Are you close the oil filter by hand? I usually close the filter whith key and you know when the filter are close when the filter is closed by hand and you need to turn to other 3/4 with the key sorry for my english

  • @CraigsDIY

    @CraigsDIY

    9 жыл бұрын

    +Fabrizio Fina Correct. You only need to tighten by hand. If you are tightening as hard as you can by hand and then turning a further 3/4 with a wrench, it is now over-tight and you may have problems removing in the future.

    Until you end up with half a shredded filter still stuck on there. If it's that stuck, the filter walls are not that strong.

    Can i just ask a question , at approx 4:01 you can see a collar on the exhaust off the manifold before it reaches the flexipipe , mine has the also but its rotten , it doesnt seem to serve a purpose , is it some sort of bracket as mine isnt attached to anything

  • @CraigsDIY

    @CraigsDIY

    Are you referring to the flanges on the exhaust header downpipe where it mates to the same on the flexipipe? It's the joint where the two sections are bolted together.

  • @CraigsDIY

    @CraigsDIY

    Or you mean the bracket a few inches forward of the joint. If you look at 11:08 (bottom right of frame) you can see it looks like it's bolted to the engine or gearbox.
