Simple Homemade Sketchbook

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I build a homemade sketchbook using simple methods and tools. It's nice to try new things and even though I've never tried to make a sketchbook its great to learn about new things. Below is a list of the materials I used and links to them on Amazon.

🙋🏻 Bookbinder here: these are wonderful. Love the thin long version. One tip to add strength: add a strip of gauze along the spine as you brush the glue. The gauze strip needs to be a couple of cm wider as the spine on eqch side. This extra gauze will build the "safety hinge" so you don't have to add the extra strip on the outside. The hinge, now part of the reinforced spine, will be hidden under the page adhered to the cover. I hope this makes sense...Lovely seeing a new video from you. Looking forward to seeing what you paint in them.

@@owingsart You are welcome Marty! Like you, I started binding my own sketchbooks because I did not find what I wanted out there, including unusual shapes. I hope this finds you well and healthy. Again, so nice to see a new video from you.

@@owingsart PS extra tip: @owingsart PS: to ensure the moisture of the glue on the covers doesn't affect the pages, you can place a piece of parchment, baking paper or plastic (or a few pages of old newspaper) between the glued cover and the book block. A few heavy books on top overnight will finish the job. Hope this helps.

Wonderful instructions! Tip: when you score with a bone folder, that is the"mountain"side of the fold as you've stretched those paper fibers to go around the fold. Then you'll get a beautiful "ball hinge" on the inside valley fold!

Beautifully done! I personally find bookbinding to be extremely soothing. And once you realize you can have your book be made with your favorite paper, exactly as you want it, without paying $60 a pop? Yeah it's an easy sell! Totally worth it even if they don't come out looking "fancy"

I made one - took a bit to get it even at the edge and one section got glue on it too far down, but it works! I love quick sketchbooks. There is drying time but no stitching time. :D

Hi Marty, I've used a similar method to make small watercolor blocks. I used glue, watercolor paper, chip board, and card stock. The glue I used is called Aleene's Stop Fraying. It dries clear and flexible and is meant to be used on fabric. But, it worked for the purpose I used it.

The sketchbooks look great! I like that you chose different papers and it will probably show which binding fits which needs best. A great experiment! Love the tiny one too. I immediately thought of tiny landscapes. There are so many miniature palettes out there, that it could make a teeny tiny travel set maybe.

These are easy enough to actually be doable for most people. And I particularly like that you took care to not waste any of the smaller scraps; 100% cotton watercolor paper is too precious to waste! Thanks for sharing :)

To get the bumps eliminated: after spreading the glue as evenly as possible, put the two pieces together and using your palm, press the pieces as smoothly as you can. Then take a straight edge (wood preferred) and starting from one edge of the glued piece press and pull across the surface. Then repeat in other direction. Do this pressing again as required to achieve a smooth surface. Wipe up excess glue.

@@owingsart Following up on Sandra's tip. A bone folder is a bookbinder's best friend. If one is not at hand, you can use an old gift or credit card to smooth the surfaces. Gently moving from the center to the edge to push the glue out.

@@owingsart Use items you have around the house for your book cover. Cereal, cracker or cookie boxes make fairly sturdy covers. After I cut out the size cover I want, I cover my box with fabric or paper (even wallpaper is good to use). I would recommended you use waxed cord or waxed embroidery thread to sew your signatures into your cover. In a pinch, I’ve used waxed dental floss to sew my signatures in. Just have fun with it. I forgot. I use the 3-hole pamphlet stitch. Easier and quicker for me since I have carpal tunnel.

Hey Marty :) How are the glued spine sketchbooks holding up after some use? I haven't tried this method yet. I have been making spiral bound watercolor books for myself resusing the cardboard backers of old spiral pads. It's been nice and I enjoy upcycling these as I can replace the paper and reuse the covers as long as they hold up. I would like to try the glue method also if they hold together nicely. Anyhow, you did a wonderful job and explained things so well. Thank you

I wish that we could post photos in our comment section so I could show you how they're doing. So far they are holding up very nicely. No loose pages or anything like that. I used the good glue that's made for this application and I think that helps. Thanks for the question. I'll update in a video when I can do a sketchbook tour.
