Simple Harmonic Motion

044 - Simple Harmonic Motion
In this video Paul Andersen explains how simple harmonic motion occurs when a restoring force returns an object toward equilibrium. The two types of harmonic motion studied in AP Physics are the mass spring oscillator and the simple pendulum. The period of a mass spring increases as the mass of the object increases and decreases as the spring constant increases. In a simple pendulum the period increases as the length increases and decreases with an increase in the gravitational field strength.

If you were hoping if your SHM tutorial video was helpful, then you should know that as a production that took planning, time, and effect to achieve a compact analysis of SHM, this one is by far and away, simple the best I've the found on KZread animated. The virtual simulations with the software interface clearly visible makes the point of what parameters are relavent even though they were not used. The short videos of a really nice air track using the more expensive sled with the LED accelerometer was something special because that option usually gets dropped in a school lab facing budget constraints. The LED accelerometer clearly showing its maximum acceleration, even thought the sled is being held still. That really drove home the point that F=ma and a was clearly not zero even though the velocity was. My original intent was to just listen to the lecture and visual it with my eyes closed. But now I get your format of starting the lecture with a flow down chart that breaks a concept into decrete parts that are easier to digest then recall as a graph that has a foundation and builds a foundation that supports the claims. Spring SHM period, T sub s, depends on the oscillating mass, m, and the spring constant, k, according to the relationship 2×pi times the quantity square root of the mass,m, divided by the spring constant,k. The period increases (oscillates slower in seconds) with increased mass, mn and decreases (oscillates faster in seconds) with increased spring constant, k. (Small angle) Pendulum SHM period, T sub p, depends on the length, l, and the gravitational acceleration, g, according to the relationship 2×pi times the quantity of the square root of the ratio of length, l, divided by gravitation acceleration, g. Got it. Thank you very much.

Calculus in physics is really boring and somewhat unnecessary. I'm in a calc based physics class and most of our problems are solved algebraically. If it involves motion and you take derivative to get velocity and acceleration, then that's not too bad but when it gets to torque, angular momentum and you integrate to get an answer then it's not easy. Sometimes because it's a vector, you integrate with I hat, j hat notation. Very confusing. I wish all physics were solved by algebra.

This expression tells us that the period increases as m increases, meaning that oscillations are slower for greater masses than for smaller ones, as one might intuitively expect. Our expression for the period also agrees with our intuition in saying that the period decreases as k increases, meaning that oscillations are faster for a stiffer spring with its larger k than for a weaker spring with its smaller k.

So basically, any motion where the acceleration of a particle is proportional to its distance from an equilibrium position is simple harmonic motion Eg. A child being pushed on a swing and a pedulum And then there are factors that affect this such as the mass, the length of the swing etc.
