Simple Free Motion Quilting

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This simple free motion quilting tutorial will show you how easy and FUN free motion quilting can be! With just a few tools, and some practice, you will be a FMQ rockstar! I am quilting an organic scallops or "hills" motif on a baby quilt.
I use the Gather quilt pattern in this FMQ tutorial video. You can purchase the digital PDF here - suzyquilts.com/shop/gather-qu...
3 Free Motion Tools needed include:
- Free motion foot that is compatible with your machine. I sew on a BERNINA 770 QE and use the BSR foot.
- Grippy gloves or quilting gloves - amzn.to/3oAFF6w
- Supreme Slider - amzn.to/3HLgVjI (There are a couple different sizes of Supreme Slider, so measure your machine before buying.
I have a quilting cabinet from Tracy's Tables and a Sew Steady acrylic insert fitted to my sewing machine which creates a larger work space for my quilt. Sew Steady tables can be purchased in various sizes and made to fit your exact machine. - amzn.to/3Ji3oAu

I am a new quilter at 75 years old. I started with garment sewing and then discovered quilt making. I love your teaching style. It's so organic and honest and just wanted to let you know how helpful your are. Thank you.

I love handquilting & have done it mostly to avoid FMQ. But I have so many things to start & finish & this is the year to train myself to FMQ. Thanks for encouraging me to start it & making it look easy as long as I keep it slow.

After fighting with getting my ruler foot to the right height and managing to break three needles, your method is so much more mellow!!! Thank you for finding time to do this tutorial! ♥️

I have never done quilting but I need to make some quilted placemats since the stores don't have them. You make it look fun and so easy to do. I was expecting for you to be swirling all over the fabric but what you did is a start. I must try it.

Such a fun and pretty scallop pattern. I love that you didn't mark it, so it looks more cartoonish. I will try this on my next small quilt. Thank you for the inspiration!

My supreme slider needed to be taped down too. Then I heard about wiping it over with a baby wipe. It is now sticking again.

I have just discovered you :) and I wondered when you straight line quilt your big ones do you do it this way or do you use the walking foot and Hera marker or guide ( I know Bernina’s have that BSR thing too). I want to try this, maybe on a potholder! Thanks

Loved your video. I am new to free motion quilting. Watching vídeos to gather as many tips as I can. It looks like you started at the bottom and are working your way to the top? Does it matter where I start? My first project is a table runner.

  • @SuzyQuilts

It doesn't matter too much. I just like to start on one side and word my way to the other for two main reasons: 1. This helps keep the quilt top from getting wavy from tension issues. When you jump around or move up and down, the fabric can pull and look distorted. 2. I want to start and stop as infrequently as possible so I don't have to bury my threads or backstitch. I like to start and stop on the edges so I can cover my backstitches with binding or in a finishing seam.

  • @SuzyQuilts

I didn’t, but you could. One thing that might be helpful is marking horizontal lines to so you know where the top and bottom of the hills should be

I have been quilting for years .I was always taught that you start quilting from the center out. Is that a great idea?

  • @SuzyQuilts

    @SuzyQuilts

I like to start on an edge and either move up/down or side to side. I think this makes hiding thread ends really easy and makes managing the whole quilt easier too.
