Simple forged Cross

Ойын-сауық

A requested video, as usual, on Friday when the message came through I had no idea how to forge a cross! I would have plasma cut one! So, after a cruise of the net I came up with this very simple method. #GaryHuston #Blacksmithing #Farrier #ASMR #Horseshoeing #Fabrication #Ironwork #Hoofcare #welder #repairs #horse #farriery #engineering

    Thanks for posting that, Gary. It gives me a few ideas to work on as a memorial for my mother who passed away in Feb. That's a nice little "gift" for her grave.

    I seen this made from some 3" square in a video. Took a 6 man striking team and 60# of coal. Weighed about 60#. But they passed with there cuts and it had a diamond shape hole in the center. For texture they just peined all ends of the cross. I like how simple your cross is. Like a lot of your videos, the sky is the limit!!! Great job Gary, I love your vieos.

    Great video. The way it is cut first and then folded in a way into shape reminds me of origami. Thanks for the video Gary!!!

    A nice video. I was taught a nice little tweak which is to heat it up but not to color and take a brass wire brush the ends of the arms. The brass color transfers to the metal for a nice addition to the cross.

    I learned how to make a cross like this a year ago at a local county fair. It's such a simple idea but it's pretty nice.

    That one is a Thomas although there are lots of different makes out there. The Italian ones ore good MACC for example. I got mine cheap from a machinery auction but there are lots of new and secondhand available from any good machinery dealer. Google your local one and ask for a stock list. They can be had for as little as a couple of hundred pounds upto a thousand or more..

    The process is exactly the same but you just cut further down on the initial cuts which gives you the hole in the middle.

    What you said around 3 minutes, if you cut all hen ay to the other line you get a hole in the middle. If you do that then you can get a Fredericks cross which can look pretty cool. It all depends on taste I guess though.

    Hi, Gary. Nice vid. I'm not into crosses either, but could be tempted to try my hand on a Thor's Hammer. I can see how you could have easily cut off a little more while doing the hot cut and ended up with a nice hammer. But I just don't like throwing away material. Have you got a better idea on how to make a Thor's hammer? /GA

    I have the measurements for the Fredericks Crosses if you would like them...haves the hole in the middles.

  • @garyhuston
    @garyhuston11 жыл бұрын

    No not really, you could just do a tenon on a piece of bar and punch a hole in another and rivet them together! But how much material are you going to waste just cutting a cross down, next to nothing!

    garyhuston Not entirely sure but I think it has to do with Frederick William III and the cross he awarded in the military in the 1800's, not the forging of it but the common name. The old German man who taught me how to make them when I was 12 called them this and so does many on the internet if you google fredericks cross (and hopefully don't get the lingerie store fredericks LOL!) However traditionally it is supposed to have the diamond in the middle but looks good either way. A neat project to keep people wondering and to use up some scrap bar stock.

    garyhuston www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=Iron+Cross if you ever want to try to get more information about the origins of a word, name, or phrase; type the word etymology after what you are looking up. It will weed out most of the crap that comes up when you google a word.
