    This video is hard for me to watch now, but I'm leaving it up just to show how my methods and production style have changed since then. This channel is all about becoming a better gardener so it's necessary to show your starting point. Even if it's painful. Especially if it's painful.

    Hi, thank you for subscribing! I'm fairly new to gardening myself, so there's a lot that I don't know. I recommend checking out Garden Answer: kzread.info Laura is very knowledgeable and she has well over 1,000 videos on growing flowers, vegetables, houseplants and succulents. Other than that, I suggest finding flowers that are native to your region. Native species are best for local birds, insects and animals. Best of luck with your new garden!

    Does the cardboard decomposte that quickly ? So the plants can grow their roots down?

  • @SomeRoomtoGrow

    @SomeRoomtoGrow

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it does break down rather pretty fast. However, I would suggest making a hole in the cardboard wherever you plant something so the roots can quickly grow deep into the soil. I didn't do that here and it slowed down plant growth until the cardboard decomposed.

    @@SomeRoomtoGrow Thank you,I'm putting a layer of cardboard down then compost around my flower beds,I'm battling grass and horsetail.( Washington state,Pacific North West) my question is,have you done one layer and it has lasted through the years? The cardboard breaks down completely within a couple years. I’ve never replaced the cardboard layer, but my methods have also changed since I built this bed. I mostly use thick layers of wood chips to suppress weeds and improve soil, though it has to be about 12 inches deep to suppress everything.

  • @SomeRoomtoGrow

    Yes, the cardboard goes directly on top. There’s no need to dig up the sod since the cardboard will kill the grass underneath.

  • @SomeRoomtoGrow

    The cardboard is meant as a weed barrier that will decompose in a few years, so I think that should be fine. Cacti have shallow roots and need a soil that drains quickly.

    So, what stops the weeds from growing in the top soil?

  • @SomeRoomtoGrow

    @SomeRoomtoGrow

    5 жыл бұрын

    Great question! Unfortunately they still find their way into the bed soil, so mulching helps a lot with that. The cardboard underneath is just a way to avoid digging out the grass and weeds before building the bed, but some weeds still come through. Mulching makes it easy to pull up any weeds that do sprout in the bed.

    Hi there, I’m also a first time gardening and attempting to make a flower bed , I did that way ,put the cardboards on the grass same method u did ,but I plants flowers .... I don’t know why this method isn’t working and my plants turns yellow and many are dying , So like a week the plants don’t turn out right on half of the plants I transfer from the pot.... Some plants bigger has more dirts that hold in the plants And some I just takes plants single not a-lots of dirt Ball holding and they don’t do welll,, (this are the new growth plants , And some that I transfer from the pot that’s that’s has more roots I carefully pull dig out and don’t have a lots dirts on it ,just the roots and some dirt little bit!! And I been giving it plenty of water cuz it still hot here ,, what did I do wrong?? Did the cardboard makes it not oxygen in to the plants , Should I have dig make the hole from the cardboard/ or on the soil I should add at least 8inch of soil ?? Please help me ?? I had to redo everything, Take the cardboard out , Dig the grass , take all the much out and it (my Garden was about like kinda big too!! So much pain in the butt!! Hi Cindy, I'm sorry to hear that your plants haven't survived in the flower bed. It's very difficult for me to determine what might have happened without seeing the plants and the soil myself. There could be many different things that caused the plants to die and I'm not able to determine that over the internet. I would suggest talking to a gardener/landscaper in your area, maybe someone who could personally take a look at your flower bed and help you to figure out how to fix it. I'm sure they would have some better answers for you. I'm sorry I couldn't help you and good luck with your garden!
