Simple Collage with Mono Printed Paper

In this video I demonstrate a simple, fun way to use collage paper - whether homemade, mono printed with a gell press, or store bought. I chose to use yellow, orange, and red with black and white, but you can use any colors you choose for this exercise - the important part is to experiment with putting different patterns, colors, and textures together. This results in unexpected combinations and it's FUN! This exercise can be used on its own as a collage warm up, a way to try out new combinations of colors/patterns, as an art journal page, and/or as a mixed media painting starter.
Materials used: sketchbook (amzn.to/3PH0Dzc), collage paper, heavy gel, and a bit of acrylic paint at the end.

I recently discovered cold wax medium (for oil painting) which I apply to collage and mixed media w/acrylic paint as a final coat in my sketchbook/art journal. It is completely transparent, seals water-based media to act as a fixative, and I can tint it with oil paint to warm it up etc. I'm extremely happy with the results. I have been working on a series of affirmation cards and the cold wax medium gives them a very nice finish that feels good when you handle them.
Love it!!!! The orange paper with the dental floss is astounding. The mix of colours and high contrast are yummy to me.

Love watching the process and seeing all your papers. On the ones that had large black writing, did you just write random words in cursive? Or did you write phrases or paint them? I really love that look.

Thanks Lisa! I just used a giant (15mm) paint marker to write words or phrases (depends on how big my paper is 😆). I love the look too ❤️

There are so many brands of gel medium. Why Nova? (This is a great video, by the way. And now I don't feel bad about how many papers I have - nothing compared to you!)

Haha - feel free to use me as an excuse to keep all the papers you want! 😆 I use Nova gloss medium and gel mediums for a couple reasons: (1) they are significantly less expensive and work just as well, if not better than other name brands (2) I tried them for the first time as an add on when I was buying paint and never looked back (3) the gloss medium is thin, but in a good way (at least to me). It dries quickly and I can move on to the next layer quickly. I buy it by the gallon 😆

Hi! You can do anything with it you’d normally do with your art - sell it, keep it, use it in a sketchbook, etc. I use my gel prints for collage material but every once in a while something amazing turns out and I frame it for sale ☺️
