Simple Beeswax Candles Using Essential Oils

We've spent hours walking around craft shows inspecting the ingredients list at every candle maker's booth! All of the candles have one thing in common . . . synthetic fragrances! We both react negatively to the chemicals released from a candle so we typically diffuse essential oils instead. Sometimes though, a girl just wants the coziness that can only be offered by a candle! So today, we are pouring our own using essential oils. It's incredibly simple and only requires a few supplies!

When you buy beeswax from Amazon and hobby lobby, etc. there are no regulations on what is mixed into the beeswax. May say 100% beeswax - but you never know. Plus, this is an incredibly expensive way to make candles. Your best bet - to make sure your beeswax is not “filled with toxic stuff” - you are better off buying your wax from local trustworthy beekeepers. Plus, your cost would go down. Only saying this because you all talk so much about “chemicals”, etc. Just thought I’d share this. I do like your candles.

That’s actually really helpful to know. And why does this not surprise me?! We actually became beekeepers ourselves so will have access to our own, but thank you for sharing this for others who will view the video!

Ever since I was pregnant with my 1st child 33 years ago, I became very sensitive to smells and still am. I will make some homemade candles. I do diffuse but have never tried candle making and it really is easy. Thank you!

Thank you for acknowledging a soy allergy! I am deathly allergic to soy also. I have recently started making beeswax candles because my husband loves candles and would buy them and burn them in the house without realizing they were soy candles. I am breaking him of buying them by making my own but getting a good enough scent for him has been a chore. I only use essential oils for scents and due to a coconut allergy I can't add coconut oil to my candles

I just purchased a couple of pounds of "organic" beeswax from Etsy. I hope it's the real deal as I am allergic to chemicals as well. This will be my first time making candles. I won't be adding EO's as those fragrances can sometimes trigger allergic reactions. I'm thinking the fragrance of beeswax, coconut oil, and honey will be sufficient enough to add warmth and a sense of well-being to my home.

Just curious, why don’t you mix the oils in with the wax and coconut oil before pouring it into the jars?

Thank you. Did i see that you added the essential oils to the top of the candle? I figured youd have to mix it in the wax.

  • @ThisOhioFarmhouse

It did get stirred into the wax, but honestly, it would still work if you don’t. It’s the warmth of it that releases the smell so even just sitting on the top would put smells into the air. I’ve actually added drops to the top of my candles (after they’re dry) in the past if I want it to be a bit stronger at times.

What size wick do you use for this size jar? I am brand new. Haven't even bought my stuff. I am just trying to find out how to and what I need. The wick size seems to be important from what I have watched so far but nobody is saying how to figure that out, And last question, what is the temperature for adding the essential oils?

It just needs to be tall enough for the container you are using. It will sit on the base and needs to raise an inch above the top to be safe. If the container is very big, consider using 3 or more wicks. I added the oil when it was starting to cool a bit but not solidifying yet.

Years ago, our church put in a request in the Bulletin, to kindly not wear perfume/strong scent... I stopped wearing perfume years ago...I am not allergic, but do not like the strong scents. re: candles: could one put the scent right into the pot of melted wax, prior to pouring?

  • @ThisOhioFarmhouse

    @ThisOhioFarmhouse

I’ve never heard of a church requesting that! Yes, it can go directly in the pot if the candles are all going to be the same. We did two different blends so we mixed in the container.

Thank you for sharing. I wish more people understood that many people are allergic or whatever to most perfumes and fragrances. I've angered some people when I've said that certain stores in the mall or businesses should be banished from the earth! 😁. They don't understand how they impact many people. I believe its affecting more as we are exposed more frequently to chemical fragrances. I can't walk down a detergent aisle without getting a headache. I was surprised to hear you can't handle soy candles. Wonder if it has to do that soy is most often a GMO product....🤔. Good to hear about adding coconut to extend burn time. Thanks agsin! ❤👍

It will degrade the quality of the oils (the more they heat up, the quicker they lose their therapeutic properties). Adding when warm vs hot is better.

  • @ThisOhioFarmhouse

Sure can. We stick to EOs simply for a cleaner product (a lot of fragrance oils are endocrine disruptors and even carcinogenic) but it will work just the same.
