Essential Oils vs Fragrance Oils - Candle Making

Are essential oils better than synthetic fragrance oils for candle making?
Use code CANDLE20 to get 20% off my candle making course: armatagecandlecompany.com/course
Are you someone that only uses synthetic fragrance oils for making candles because of the selection and performance? Or maybe you only want to use essential oils because they’re natural. Perhaps you’re neither - you just want the candle to smell good and you don’t CARE how that happens!
In this video we discuss the pros and cons of scenting candles using essential oils and fragrance oils. There are merits and considerations for both kinds, outlined here by performance, safety, and general appropriateness for your work.

As someone with breathing issues I find scented ones are usually waaaay to strong and headache inducing. It's hard to find unscented or lightly scented. The more natural and gentle the better, I'm definitely in the essential oils camp.

This is absolutely the BEST explanation I've seen so far. No bias. No scare tactics. Just hard facts. I'm a soap maker using only essential oils and want to do the same with my candles which I'm now ading to my line. All of the other explanations I've seen so far on using essential oils would have you believe They're an extreme fire hazard, produce extremely weak candles, and therefore should not be used, needless to say, many of those explanations came from fragrance oil suppliers. Thank you for this.

Hi! I make beeswax candles, a mixture of 1lb beeswax and & then 4oz of coconut oil to decrease cracking and increase burn time. When I first started making candles a few months ago, I only used the minimally processed beeswax and tried to work only with essential oils. Following the advice of someone on youtube, I once put so much essential oil in my candles that the first one I lit caught fire! I had to melt that whole batch down twice, diluting with more wax before it was safe. Now I use a mixture of essential oil and fragrance oils (some even say they are made with essential oil!). I always use 10% fragrance in my candles and although the ones with only essential oil don't have as strong a hot throw, they do blend well with the natural honey scent of my wax and turn out pretty well. I feel like the composition of the wax is more important, considering you are also breathing the wax in as it is being burned as fuel for the flame, another reason I love beeswax and coconut oil. Thanks for this video!

I use 100% essential oils in my candles the trick is really learning to blend them so I’ve ended up learning a lot about natural perfumery and knowing how to mix top/middle/base notes is gonna get you a good scent throw for sure & also bring up the flashpoint for the lighter oils :) I don’t find them to be too much of my costs, but I also don’t have to pay for jars because I repurpose bottles so that probably makes a difference

Hi Ali! I want to make a couple just for fun, but I fear my money will evaporate, haha. Could you help me with the low/hot temperature thing? Most people say essential oils will evaporate at high temperatures, while other people (including chemistry professionals) say heat helps with binding. So... what's your take? Could you give me an average temperature at which to add the essential oils? Thanks!

I am considering switching from fragrance oils to essential oils .... because a lot of people who like my products say they don't want to burn unknown things in their home. Ethically this makes sense to me and I feel like I can't in good faith sell something that might be harmful but on the same note here.... if essential oils are just as hazardous now I feel stumped on whether to switch or not!

Thank you for this informative video. I learned what you shared through time, trial and error. I use essential oils in my candles because I have a health and wellness company which offers aromatherapy products made with essential oils and I only want natural oils in my candles. When making my candles, I allow the wax to cool to the touch (until the wax is almost filmy) and then I add the oil, this way the fragrance is stronger than if the temperature was higher. I also only use therapeutic grade essential oils. Customers have told me that the candles burn nicely and smell great 😊.

I run a company that is all about bringing positive vibration and lifting the feeling of a person or space. I make several varieties of candles that are made to give a specific feeling or vibe. I have some that are essential oils only. They do get some scent from herbs such as white sage and palo santo that are mixed in as well. Others are a blend of more natural fragrance oils that have no phthalates, nitro musk, or other things that are determined to be negative for our health or environment, and essential oils. I adore the products I make, but certainly have had to learn some specialty processes to get them just right. The biggest suggestion is to work at much lower temperatures. Hope everyone is doing well, staying safe and warm 💗.

I love this video! It was super informative. I am starting a candle business with a primary focus on massage oil candles. My biggest concern was the essential oils burning off too quickly, even though massage oil candles have a lower melting point. Thank you for giving me clarity on the subject!

Really informative, thank you! I'm very new to candle making, my original area is CP soap making. There I only use essential oils as my soaps are meant to be as natural as possible. No artificial colorants or scents, which is much more challenging. So, not surprised that the same happens with candles, but that's ok. I'll continue testing!

FO all the way! We stick to skin safe and do lots of testing. Moving away from essential oils as the only fragrances in our candles was the best thing we could do to reach our target market. Obviously others could see the opposite. Thanks for the video! I'm subscribing

I'm 7 months late watching this video but I'm glad I came across it. This was SO helpful to me. I started my candle business in Aug 2020 and jumped right into essential oils. Very pricey. I tried fragrance oils but didn't realize the difference between the two. I am back testing both now with my wax of choice and hope to produce a better throw. Loved this.

@@luvk421 hey there! I did more testing and learned that fragrance oils are good for a very loud smelling candle and the essential oils are more of a subtle, long lasting smell and a more healthier burn.

@@majastremfelj9770 fragrance oils are better for a loud or strong smelling candle. Essential oils are plant based and more of a beneficial candle, not so strong in smell. But feel free to try them both for testing purposes.

I was in the process of making a gift basket of calming products for my girls who are now mothers. I bought everything to make candles again, it’s been a few years, but I thought you had to use essential oils. Personally my favorite is a strong eucalyptus mint, which reminds me of a hotel I stayed at in New Orleans. I thought the only way to add fragrance was to add EO. Thank you for explaining all this. It’s very helpful! Looks like I just go buy one and then go home and experiment.

Thanks for the lovely video, I'm new to candle making but have worked with EO's in soap for 10+years. My whole business is natural based so FO's were never an option for me. So yes the testing is lengthy and expensive but I'm hoping it will be worth the effort! I've come up with 3 really good combo's so far which have amazing hot throw so fingers crossed!!

This video is SO helpful and I really appreciate the work you put into it! 🙏🏻 I started making candles a few months ago and I did start my testing using essential oils only. I have finally gotten to a place where I’m more comfortable with my hot throw. I am interested in what you mentioned about creating a cooler burning candle when using essential oils. Do you have any more advice on the best wicks, jars, and waxes for essential oil candles? I have been using 464 soy wax, glass mason jars, and CD 8 & 12 wicks. I would love to learn literally anything else you have to offer on this type of candle. Every kernel of info I have found through my research has been so helpful. Sadly there isn’t much available. Thank you so much for creating this video! ✨
