Simple Alternative to Heating Pad for Transplants

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I explain why insulating the transplant tray from the window and windowsill is a better way to keep soil warm than heating pads.

I re-use the Styrofoam for the seedling grow area. It's good to see it getting more use since it is not recyclable in most places.

Great advice! There are many ways to get-er done. I don't have heating pads. I stack the planted seedling trays a couple feet behind the wood stove. Once they germinate I find they will grow at much lower temperatures then they required to wake up.

Exactly. Heat is only really there for a wee kickstart. Plus, you don't want too much heat & humidity around young seedlings anyway. I start mine on a heavy wooden monk's bench between the fireplace, and the radiator. They get a day in the heated propagator, and two sat on the bench whilst two other trays are rotated through it. So each tray is only actually in there for two days. It's like two really nice days out of every six. That's normally plenty to get them started.

One thing I recently tried is to put a layer of cardboard between the heating pad and the tray because it keeps the temperature from overheating the bottom, more even temperature. Seems to be working much better.

I have three of the three tray windowsill propagators. They have a main tray for water, and three seed trays with vented clear plastic covers. They are pretty good for this type of setup. I think they were £5 each. They don't have modular trays like the ones in this video. But a lot of the trays like yours will fit in the base tray. You can then sit the covers on top. The seal won't be as good, but they will still provide some heat during the day/night. I have done it myself recently to start some flowers for my garden & friends. There are three sections of twelve cell modular trays. If I end up with a spare tray, somebody will take it, I'm sure. I would recommand something like them to anybody. They are a dark green and clear covers, with a yellow coloured sliding vent. I'm sure people have seen them about. In fact, here is the product code for them. Cheap and cheerful. Product Code: G2666SET

I sprout heat-loving seeds on top of my fish tank, which is kept heated. For really warmth-loving plants like ginger and turmeric, the incubator (in with the eggs) helps them get warm enough to start growing.

I rotate my trays through the heated propagator. They normally get one day in there, then two sat beside it on the heavy wooden monk's bench. That way they are mostly round room tempt with one good day out of every three. I also have one ageing heated propagator, and lots of seeds to start. But you only need that little warmth now and then to trigger the seeds. You're right about not wanting too much of a good thing. Moister and warmth are the two main players when seeds are germinating. Once they throw out those first two cotyledons, you really want them in a bright, frost free area. An old woollen sock, scarf, a bit of polystyrene packaging. In an unheated spare room or bright hallway window sill. All my tomatoes bar a few are in 4" pots down the allotment poly. I start like sixty seeds in one seed tray, then prick them out of there into a 4" pot as soon as those cotyledons open up. That will be them until I transplant them into their final spot, or I give them away. That should give me decent transplants by our last frost date of May 10th. Providing I check the weather, they could easily go out a week or so before that date. The same reason I leave planting any potatoes until somewhere in the first week of April. Maybe it's me, but April fools seems like a good reminder, not to roll the dice. A lot of people in Ireland and elsewhere say 17th of March. That may be grand if you live down round Cork, where the last frost is between the 25 & 30th of March. If I win the lotto, man, lol. A hector or two down there would do me nicely. And no black flies.

I have an 8 bulb T5 setup and i will germinate seeds on top of it so peppers have extra heat. I used to germinate them in a bag on the fridge, and then in plug trays on the fridge. All of them worked. Seedling heat mats have been really useful for me in the garden...when raising baby chicks though lol. Safer than a heat lamp and i just stick it under a little bit of bedding. Have 6 brooding now, and it normally lives in my girlfriends bearded dragon tank.
