It's a great movie, I remember at the end, he's crying (because she, Simone Signoret is dead) and his wife is so happy thinking he's crying of emotion because he loves her! It's a terrible situation, so sad!

Subtle acting at its best. She did'nt had so-called Oscar scenes. But over-all the effect of her performance is very powerful. Her eyes and face showed thousand expressions. Alice Aisgill blowing smoke towards the screen is imprinted in my mind. p.s i just love this movie and its background music especially during Simone's scenes, it was very fitting to her character warm and melancholic at the same time.

A lot of comments about Lawrence Harvey being miscast. I agree with this too. I never rated him as an actor. But can you think of who might have played Joe better? One person springs to mind for me - Richard Burton?! Handsome, devilishly charming, great charisma etc. He was possibly a bit old by 1959 to play Joe though.

I couldn't agree more. He doesn't brings the charisma or the emotional depht, warmness or even the sex appeal to make me believe that such an charming and interesting woman would fall for him. It's all up to Signore's performanse to convince us her feelings are for real. And by succeding so, we realise how great actress she's been. Damn, he ruins the whole movie.
