She's great. So "human". She was a very intelligent, classy woman. A real artist. (Wouldn't they be playing Tombola instead of bingo? Maybe they put it in for an English speaking audience)

Actually, Williams apparently had written the stage play 4 years earlier and had her in mind for the role, but she turned it down because she thought her English wasn’t at that level yet.

Tennessee Williams intended his friend Anna Magnani to play Serafina. Magnani thought her English wasn't good enough; Maureen Stapleton played the role on Broadway. Watching the film, it is difficult to imagine anyone but Magnani in the role.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is what you call talent. Anna Magnani was one of the best actresses who had grazed the silver screen. And to think she had to take English lessons to be cast in this film. And she brought home the Oscar for Best Actress of 1955. 🏆🎥🎬📽️🏆

I just happened to change the channel and up popped "The Rose Tatoo"-- I really didn't see the entire movie and in fact missed the last half hour- I was riveted with the performance of Anna Magnani- an amazing actress- I googled and found out she died at 65 of pancreatic cancer and felt so sad: she was so alive, so fiery, such a wonderful actress.

Her extraordinary talent would NEVER be appreciated today! There are not many actresses with her DEPTH and raw emotional power. Women's roles today rely mainly on artifice and sadly, are usually very one-dimensional. We need more female writers, directors, and studio heads to create the really important roles that now only exist for MEN. Some have tried and failed to penetrate the mostly male-dominated film industry. Tennessee Williams wrote parts SPECIFICALLY for her and others because his work could not be expressed by a mediocre actor. The power of her artistry could draw you into any role she played and made her uncommon beauty shine through.

It is just my personal opinion but I rank Anna Magnani in the Rose Tattoo as my No.#2 pick for the all time best actress Oscar win of all time just behind 1952 best actress winner Shirley Booth in Come Back, Little Sheba and before my #3 pick Vivien Leigh in A Streetcar Named Desire. Note how all three are from the 1950's. By far Oscar's best decade for the leading ladies, sorry Meryl Streep.

As with Shirley Booth in 1952, because Magnani wasn't a known U.S. box office draw in 1955, Burt Lancaster gallantly signed on to what were essentially 'women's pictures' because the actress was simply so gifted he was happy to help fill seats.

@@leonardwilsonsr8198The studio, Paramount, needed Lancaster so people would see Magnani. Most American audiences weren't sophosticated in the 1950s to have seen Magnani alone on a marquee. That would've happened only in Europe back then.

Of all Italian actresses, only Giulietta Masina can match Magnani in artistry, and they were completely different. Magnani was a force of nature, a mighty tempest. Masina was also a force of nature, but a secret fountain of spring-water alone in a bleak wilderness.

@ScarlettOBeara totally agree with you! totalmente d'accordo con te! And you know, she was a great person in real life too, she brought up her son Luca all by herself (her boyfriend at the time, a quite famous Italian actor, left her when she told him she was pregnant), and she battled to give Luca her surname. It was really difficult at that time to be a single mother in Italy...also, an independent- woman like her was seen as a threat, a de-stabilising figure for post-war patriarchal society.
