I like Simon, in fact he’s my favourite pundit. He’s often said that United are, in his opinion, the biggest club in the world. Even here he’s said we have a remarkable allure. Time will tell if DA is a good appointment. What can’t be denied is that scepticism over United finally getting it right is understandable. As a United fan, I think we can finally begin to be optimistic.

If he is heading for Man united but has a 12 month release clause notice as rumoured, I'm not sure I'd want him to stay in control during those 12 months. You would have to question, if he spots a good young prospect, would he give him to us (the team he is leaving) or save him for them (the team he is potentially committing to long term)?? It would be of more benefit to him to recommend them to Man U rather than us as he wouldn't want to strengthen the team he is leaving behind, would he? This draws serious questions on his integrity.

Has Ashworth really achieved anything at Newcastle to justify this status? He has only been there 18 months. Most of the big deals like Bruno, Trippier, Botman for Newcastle were done before he arrived. He only has been there three transfer windows and one of the saw zero incomings. Very few of the out of favour players have been moved on, the biggest outgoing being Saint-Maximin to a Saudi club. T Not saying he wouldn't be a success. Just hard to really judge after 18 months. Also need to consider at Brighton they're still doing outstanding and he hasn't been there for two years and was only there for three years. Man Utd have even more players on mega wages to move on. Will be interesting to see how he gets on.

Everything suggests Botman was agreed before Ashworth arrived. He did sign Isak and Gordon who are both excellent players. Newcastle didn’t have a great summer window though when considering positions that needed filling vs what was purchased (needed a 6 and a RW, got fullback and a left winger). Who knows though he might be brilliant - I just wouldn’t use his time at Newcastle as an example of that yet 🤷‍♂️

Saying he has not operated at the top end of the market? Well are you saying Bruno, Botman, Isak or Gordon would not get in the Manu Team? All 4 of those would walk into that team.

@@lilbaz8073 Manchester United are miles away from Manchester City. I dont believe a current United player would get in that City team. I fully believe there is a step in-between United and City and that is where Ashworth will be operating and several of the Newcastle purchases sit in that level. United have been overpaying for mid level talent for too long

First of all, he has 28% by the end of this year, not 25%, please get that right for the future Ashworth, if he comes, will work under Berrada, who comes from City and probably knows what he si doing. Plus he has time to prepare, as he only starts in the summer. Ashworth will most likely bring his own people in and current staff at MUFC will leave. As a MUFC fan, I think the mess is huge but nothing that cannot be sortet quickly with the right leadership. The problem was the Glazer micromanagement, where people cannot work to full capacity. Lets see how this will change but the first signs are very positive

I don’t get the hype over Ashworth, it’s not like he’s unearthed unknowns who have become superstars. Other clubs were after the likes of Botman and Guimaraes as well. However he has brought in quite a few with question marks over them - Ashby, Kuol, Hall etc. If Ashworth stays at Newcastle then fine, if he goes I certainly won’t lose any sleep over it.

Didn't Simon sing Dan Ashworth's praises not so long ago but now cos Ashworth is pretty much on his way to United Simon has changed his tune & is questioning whether he's the best in class lmao. What an absolute drip Simon is man. For me seeing so many disgruntled faces cos United are finally acting like a proper football club in recruiting the best in class is beautiful they're clearly not liking it. We're just getting started

I would argue that what he did at Brighton is best in class cause everyone and their mother wants to pay fortunes for players they got for pennies. Granted the whole Brighton system is responsible for that bit Ashworth more than played his part. Newcastle have been shrwed spenders as well since he joined. That's what Man United need.

I kinda agree with Simon here. Is Dan Ashworth best in class? I wouldn't say he is, but he is much MUCH better than the clowns running the recruitment side of the club over the years. My concern with Ashworth, and even Mitchell to a certain extend, is that their value as football directors is in talent identification who made a significant sum of money for their club as opposed to onfield success. Ashworth and Mitchell are very good football directors, but their successes has been based on spending minimal amounts on players and making a significant profit later on. Not based on how much success on the field. Ashworth going to United is not best in class, but a bit of a project for himself to see if he can contribute and create a consistent trophy winning club. I think he can and I hope it works.
