I gladly agree with you! Without underestimating the titans before him (Caruso, Gigli, Pertile, Lauri-Volpi), Corelli simply had 100% of everything that matters: quality and size of the voice, technique, musicality, imagination, sensitivity, sensuality, passion, tenderness, elegance, abandon, ability to appreciate and create beauty, taste, looks. His detailed and memorable phrasing makes him the ideal interpreter of most of the roles he sang: Chenier, Don Jose, Calaf, Cavaradossi, Canio, Enzo, Turiddu, Don Alvaro, Don Carlo, Radames, Manrico, Ernani, Macduff, Raoul, Romeo, Werther... No other tenor could express love, desperation, vulnerability, tenderness, abandon like Corelli!

È stata una fortuna che la Scala abbia cambiato programma cancellando Guglielmo Tell sostituendolo con Ugonotti.Non avremmo ascoltato questo duetto in cui Corelli e Simionato penso abbiano raggiunto il momento più alto delle rispettive carriere.Chi non ha mai ascoltato Gli Ugonotti rimane indubbiamente stupito dall’ascolto di questo duetto ma anche chi lo ha ascoltato in altre edizioni (rare) in questa ascolta una meraviglia come se Meyerbeer avesse scritto l’opera per Corelli e Simionato con le loro voci appaganti e possenti dimentiche di quella filologia che ci viene somministrata ogni piè sospinto come se questa fosse la panacea di tutti i mali.Si dice che Meyerbeer abbia scritto la parte di Raul per Adolphe Nourrit ,famoso tenore contrattino di allora ,ma avendo ascoltato l’edizione integrale Decca con il tenore Vrenios,simil voce di Nourrit anche se questi probabilmente più bravo,non mi sono ne strappato i capelli ne sono balzato dalla sedia per la gioia e l’emozione…Dell’intepretazione di Corelli e Simionato si è detto tutto,anche i più recalcitranti critici si son dovuti arrendere ammettendo che teatralmente il duetto funziona con quella minima carica anche veristica.Anche nei 334 commenti letti c’è tutto il bene possibile e le iperboli si sprecano e mi aggiungo anch’io confermando le emozioni che ci provocano le due voci insieme e il pathos con cui Corelli esprime l’amore alla sua donna.Senza contare i vertici vocali raggiunti con una facilità e sicurezza sbalorditiva.

Surely the greatest tenor voice of the 20th century. For those who question his "technique" listen to the dimuendo on "tu m ami". Very few opera singers in any range can make such a perfect dimuendo and fill it with expressive emotion at the same time.

Corelli in his prime at 41, and Simionato never sounding better than this, EVER, in her 53rd year (and near the very end of her career!!). She brilliantly matches every high Bb, B natural and C that Franco sings with one of her own. Indeed, although she sang Amneris, Azucena and Eboli, the "high" Verdi mezzo roles, Valentina was the highest lying role she ever sang. What a triumph for her, too! Brava, Giulietta. Ti voglio bene assai.

The opera aptly called the "night of 7 stars" for the challenge of every major character. This was a transcendental evening of opera and this duet is perhaps the acme of the whole event.

No one can match Corelli’s remarkable voice! Not Lanza, not Pavarotti-no one!

David Solomon Pavarotti was so overrated my friend. He came when marketing was abused in the world of Opera & his Agency etc. Exploited it beyond measure etc. And today it's to such a low level that we don't even go to see Opera performers at all. The only true Opera singer we would go see is Saioa Hernandez. Coming to Seattle,Gioconda 5-8-2021.We,ll be there if God willing my friend. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

The more I hear Giulietta Simionato the more I believe that she actually was a soprano falcon. Her upper register is too amazing for a usual mezzo-soprano.

she was a soprano. of course with good chest but no real low notes. listen to Oralia Dominguez, thats a real mezzo. today they are all sopranos: Garanca, di Donato, Rachvelishvili......

Simionato fue unas de las pocas mezzo verdianas con un amplísimo registro vocal. No era una soprano Falcon. Los papeles que ella hace como Azucena, Amneris, Ulrica entre otras no podría hacerlas una soprano Falcon.

Wooow Simionato haciendo un Do6!!! Que mezzosoprano pudiera hacer esto de ese modo tan estridente!!! Corelli y Simionato son dos gigantes de la ópera.

Maybe the greatest singing ever recorded anytime! The whole recording of this opera is almost a miracle of exciting voices ever heard in one production !

Simionato e Corelli anche in Carmen semplicemente insuperabili.

Unbelievable! And what a star-studded cast! Everyone is picked from the top shelf, which in those years was really high!

On every level this is a remarkable, unique moment in live recorded history and which makes it so uniquely cathartic.

Hard for me to appreciate Meyerbeer: no arias, only attempts with loud orchestration, everything is left to the voices of the singers, who are here wonderful of course.

Listening to him here is to much, it makes me cry.....fantastic!

Sono completamente d'accordo.Ritengo un'offesa paragonare i tre di sopra a Corelli....E' una questione di onestà intelletuale...Ci può stare il "tifo" ma costoro non hanno mai fatto accapponare la pelle a nessuno e raggiungere i traguardi come in questo duetto non è stato nelle loro corde e non lo sarà mai (Kaufmann, pur bravo in certo repertorio).

I would say one of the five most beautiful duets ever written.

And let's not forget that the debt we owe these two singers is that they allow us to see what a genius Meyerbeer was. The best singers always see themselves as servants of the composer.

They are unbelievable good! What difficult music to sing. The Composer's works are hardly heard today and the difficulty might be some of the reason.

The pastime of according "best ever" in anything is understandable as an exercise in speaking of ourselves under the cloak of speaking of others. So, shall I......I heard Corelli out of the corner of my ear 44 years ago. Texaco's Saturday Afternoon at the Opera was on a friends radio and as a filler between acts the talking heads had something to say and illustrate with a sound byte of Corelli. I knew nothing of opera at the time, but I heard his "sound" and I stopped the conversation between friend and I to hear more. Years later I heard it said of "singers" that "perfection" was not required. What elevated one voice in discussion above others was that once one heard "it", one knew it as the particular singer ever after.....no chance of being any one else. This is the effect that Corelli's voice had on me as a completely naive listener. So, it remains. Now as to "greatest" effort, I think there has to be a way to evaluate that beyond personal preference.....versatility, timbre, languages, etc. For me, who listens some part of every day to "singers" past and present in the classical canon, I think in terms of "if overnight some magic descended on my vocal chords, what voice would I most like the magic to have accomplished?" I would not feel short-changed by any transformation to one of the "greats", but at the top of the list for me has been for many years Wunderlich.....certainly not a voice to fill the opera house with a blasting high C, but such warmth and elegance across so many types of music that I'd be quite content....:) And yet, on first hearing his voice, I hadn't the riveting experience of Corelli's as I mentioned above....
