Rik P It's not one of the most accepted to be honest. It's about as accepted as the Gothic theory...meaning It's pseudo-scientific woo from the 90s, when the right wing government was pushing all kinds of nonsense just to try and "prove" we're not Slavs. And all with the purpose of distancing us from the Serbs as much as possible. Maybe we are from Iran, but in that case, so are all the other Slavs, and in fact could be all Indoeuropeans. Nothing special about our small tribe.

@Siniša Vuco it's oblivious that every nation have been under influence of neighbors. such as Iranians which mixed with other nations . خراوات is a Persian word which pronounces like Croat. Croats are originally from north east of Iran which nowadays named Khorasan. I was there about 5 years ago and I saw a city which it's name is Kharve. when I read a text on the net about origin of Croatians I really surprised with this resemblance. If you pay attention to the type of clothes and the face of Croats you can realize my view.

As a Turk I knew I would know all of the words even before I watched the video. We have too many Persian words in our language and with the Ottoman Empire all those words also got into Balkan languages, so the Ottoman Empire and Turkish were like bridges between Persian language and the Balkans. I can see similar stuff in other videos like Persian vs Greek, Persian vs Serbian etc.

Kurdish and Persian have common words, but that doesn't mean that all of these words are definitely of Persian or Kurdish origin, but because our race is the same, that's why there are words in common between the two languages.

Croatia was partly affected by the Ottoman Empire in the Middle Ages around 150g Some words in Croatian remain from that time.

As a Hungarian, this was so interesting to see how many words I share with them, padlizsán for eggplant, zsiger for liver(which is not used anymore) and a lot of others. WOW!

Regarding the dugme,in Dalmatia we say botun(also button),and many words in Dalmatia are derived from Italian

Seems that czech history book is right .....ANEW , persian : azno , or zeno , russian : zanovo , serbian : iznova , slovak : znova , croatian : iznova….the reason of this similarity of persian and slavic languages about the word “anew”, is this : the word “from” in persian is “az” or “ze” , the word “from” in slavic languages is “iz” or “z” and the word “new” in both languages are similar ..and both say “from new” instead of “anew”....when you see similarity in even a preposition word like FROM iz az ze, then this means something!!

Croat = Hrvat or in old Croatian Horvat And it stands for Hor/Sun and Vat/Land which has it's roots in the old Dari language spoken in the Persian Empire. Croatians were located in the area of Helmand which is in todays Afghanistan.

However Horvat may also be from related stem: Ukrainian Keruvaty means "to rule, to manage", Kerivnyk (Kerovanik/Kerunik - ova/iv open to close syllable change) "chief, manager". If we change nik suffix for equivalent tel (Kerovatel/Kerutel) we'll receive Latin Curator/Procurator (pro- means "via, over" so Procurator is Curator of Curators, or Supreme Curator, Supreme Administrator of Roman province). Greek Demo-Kratia is also the same stem. This Krator/Curator/Kerutel goes to Indian Kshatriya and Avestan Xshatra (Avestan is known for its R/Sh interchange the same like in Polish, so Xshaatra = Xraatra, btw now you see why U in Slavic KerUtel/KerOVAtel because Iranian AA which in Persian is pronounced close to O always goes to Slavic U/Y with exception if the word ends with AA - then will be A) which is source for Persian shaax (king of Iran). So you see in this case Xorvat means "ruling" or "ruler". However these stems are related because original meaning is from sunRISE. Ruler is Higher than people, he is Risen.

A great format, interesting to watch. Most of the common words are relatively late borrowings by Croatian speakers from Persian, through Turks who used to occupy the next door Bosnia. However it would be interesting to find out how much vocabulary Croatian and Iranian have in common that goes back to their common Proto-Indoeuropean origin. They say that the Early Persian was very similar to Sanskrit. Croatian shares some grammatical features and vocabulary with Sanskrit. Therefore it must have some similarities to the Early Persian. In addition, Croats although classified as Slavs, at least in part have Sarmatians, an Eastern Iranian people, as their ancestors. It is possible that the Croatian language was formed as a result of melding of Slavic and Eastern Iranian linguistic influences.

i like this channel and ı recognise almost every words and notice that theese words transfered european languages by turks. BTW ı want to add that cep and düğme is same in hungarian too. Düğme sounds quite turkish to me , düğüm means knot .ı searched the words in etimology dictionary ,it shows düğme is Turkish , cep is Arabic . Cheers

You should have done words of indoeuropean origin. Words for body parts (like nose), or domestic animals (like cow), etc. Many people don't realise that Persian is indoeuropean language and share some similarties with Slavic languages.

But dude Dügme is a Turkish word , Nişan and Nar is Persian word and pamuk is ancient Greek. I'm Croatian and I say botun or puca

I don't speak either language, but I find these videos entertaining.

This video's captions clearly show that the common words came mostly from a third language(Arabic or Turkish), and I don't know how that can establish a direct connection between the two! Good video anyways.

actually, from what I have heard...first Croats came from Persia

Indeed, many Croatians have told me about that as well! I am vey compelled to believe the notion, as evident by the similar tribal music, traditional tribal costumes, foods, and even looks. My Croatian fiancé always gets mistaken for being Iranian in Iranian stores. We look like brother and sister. What is interesting to note is that I instantly felt like he was from the same blood when I met him. I had a sort of instinctual feeling without knowing where he was from! So cool :)) I also read that the Iranian Scythians/Sarmatians inhabited Eastern Europe, and a lot of the Zoroastrian burial sites are dispersed there, along with other ancient Iranian artifacts. True,its the Iranian Croatian origin theory.It's yet to be confirmed but if this is true then that would mean Serbs are the ancient Serboi.The nomadic/sarmatian tribe known to Romans.If this is true then,that would be such HUGE news,it would fix relations between Serbia and Croatia by 10000%.I hope i can live long enough to see the day when this theory is finally confirmed.

Croats are Slavonic people and Slavonic are most similar Indo-European language group to Indo-Iranian. Slavs and Aryan people even share same root paternal gene - R1a.

I am a Vietnamese lover of history and cultures. I have respect and love for both Iran and Hrvaska. One of my Czech friends told me that Czech History books claim that the Czech people came from the Zagros Mountains of Iran. I guess most if not all Slavs came from Iran?

For kavez i use kafez as well :) Badem (almond). Dud i call dud :) Nishan i call mishena, but we have word nishan as well :) Dzep i call dzep, but we call also dzob :) Anar i call nar :) Pamuk is pamuk im my language as well :) Barut i call barut :) Dzigrica we calling sometimes Dziger :) Also we use patlidzan for eggplant (aubergine) :) I worked with people from Iran few months and i realized in our language we use a lot words coming from Farsi :) Perde - Curtain, Dzham - Glass, Tefter - Notebook, Kapak - Lid, Dushek, Kilim - Carpet (Ghilim), Shishko, Shamar, Kumur - Coal, Dukan - Shop, Kibrit - Matches, Chorap - Socks, Chorba - Soup, Sindzhir - Chain, Gerdan - Necklace. And many, many more...

hehe I learned what is Bademjan because Kashk-e Bademjan was one of my favorite dishes in Iran! As a Croatian I liked this episode very much :) Yeah, it is so funny how many similar words there are in languages, but when I listened to Iranians speak there's no way to recognize even one :)

Thanks again, Bahador. Sometimes in description u used not the last point in the word root. For example: Nur comes from Akkadian and Sumerian and only then in Middle East languages - Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Farsi :) Make Croatian and Armenian

Historical studies indicate that the Croats started migrating from the Iranian homeland to Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia about 3,000 years ago. However, a much larger migration took place about 1,700 years ago. Probably the reason behind this migration was the suppression of the followers of Manichean faith during the Sassanid era. The said scholar LSO says that the word Serb has also Iranian origin, which can be recognized in the word "Charv" meaning cattle.

go ahaid!if you learn it you will be able to speak and understan all other "slavic" languages....they are all versions of croatian.the biggest problem you will have is with cases of noun....in english there are 4...in croatian 7.... for example....marko said "imam pamučnu majcu"/i have cotton shirt....pamuk is cotton but in english it is infinitive and declination of the word in genitive(who? or what?....PAMUK-PAMUČNU...every case has the declination according to awnsering of a question)...and also "majca" is infinitive and genitive case (i have what?) majcU....get it?otherwise learning to read and write in croatian is simple. for example....New York...you can read it right? but if you are trying to read it letter by letter the way the letters sound it is very hard to combine that into word. in croatian the word is combination of sounds of letters....like MARKO...M-a-r-k-o k is read like c in english and c like ts in TSunami...i hope i helped a bit

It’s funny but our high school teacher in Persian literature would always question why Iranians would pronounce “dogme” as “dokme” as the correct pronunciation in Persian was in fact with a “g” sound. But i don’t know xD

Persian also has many similarities with French. That would be awesome if you could make a video Persian vs French 😀😀 What do you think?

The problem is the person who conducts these videos are not a linguist, so they will only use words that have entered from one language to the other, instead of doing actual cognate words in languages of same family like persian and french which both are indo-european and would have tons in similiarties. So for example, instead of doing words like genou, qui, que, chose, in french which have same cognates in Persian, or dialects in parts of Iran like Gilaki and Luri which make mother father water pronounce as mer per au (similar to french mere pere eau), they will do like merci, ascenseur, sechoir which are french words that have entered into persian.

Come on I speak the Iraqi dialect of Arabic language and Persian is very close to our dialect this is so interesting 😀 almost half of the words that you guys said are the same in our language too 😏😇

Yes, you're right haha. Marko is a good buddy of mine, and I am much more closer with him than I am with the others who were going in against him, and it's an inside joke between us that I would do my part to side with his competition. Anyways, it's just for fun and he's a smart guy so he'll do fine regardless. It's too bad he's stationed away for work overseas until next year or I would've had him over for a lot more Croatian videos!

12:25 In Turkish, pamuk is cotton (we use it to mean white and soft like snow; even "snowwhite" tale is translated as "cotton princess") but pembe (panbe?) is just pink. I found it strange and interesting.

Yes comparing Hungarian to one of the Turkic languages would be interesting, because there is something called Turanism that some Hungarians seem to hold dear, I wonder how prevalent it is in the evidence of the language.

since i dont see anyone mention it but the name croatian or Hrvati is said to come from an Iranian(sarmatian)word as well as Serb. Many believes that it might not be of native Slavic lexical stock, but a borrowing from an Iranian language. Common theories from the 20th and 21st centuries derive it from an Iranian origin, the root word being a third-century Scytho-Sarmatian form attested in the Tanais Tablets as Χοροάθος (Khoroáthos, alternate forms comprise Khoróatos and Khoroúathos). Max Vasmer first considered it as a loanword from Old-Iranian, *(fšu-)haurvatā- "shepherd, cattle guardian" (formed of Avestan pasu- "cattle" and verb haurvaiti "guard"), later also from Old-Iranian hu-urvatha- "friend" comepared to Hrvat(croatian self ethnonym) as Croatians were first mention in Eastern Europe in the Sarmatian region in the 6th century.

This is very interesting, I never knew my native language is so similar with Persian!

This is probably one of my favorite channels, accidentally found it in my recommended videos and it's just so great. I'm from Croatia and I'd like to know if Marko can respond or if you can respond in Marko's name and tell me from what part of Croatia is he? My guess would be Zagorje or something like that.

there are theories that Croats originated in Iran or Persians, there were also people in the former Yugoslavia who investigated this theory and came to the knowledge that proved it, but the government at the time persecuted them even allegedly killed some of the historians who investigated Croatian origins from Iran and destroyed files and evidence because it did not suit them that all the nations of Yugoslavia were Slavs and Croats did not.

Turkic word for liver is *dzigerica* but Slavic word for that is *jetra* like or simmilar in Farsi. Keep people good job showing that Indo Europeans share the old Proto Indo European Language.

Did he actually have to think so much where the words dugme and badem are concerned? I am just a learner of the croatian language and just startet level C2, yet I directly knew the meaning!

67claudius This is kind of misleading. We do have persian loanwords (via ottoman turkish), but they represent a small part of our vocabulary, especially in the standard language. In this video they used almost exclusively persian loanwords, not words with obvious PIE rots like "jetra".

As a Croatian, this is my view on this. The languages may have some similar words but If you were going to do sentences, it would be completely different. No hate tho

The word "dud" is very seldom used in Croatia. Even lots of Croats do don´t know what does it mean because we are saying more murva.

No kao voce vise se upotrebljava u hrvatskom murva nego dud i znam jako veliki broj ljudi kaj uopce ne znaju kaj je dud. Kad se kaze samo dud. To kaj kaze sto se tice stranih rijeci pricas bedastoce jer sam u potpunosti svjesna da ima jako puno rijeci ne samo tirskih nego i arapskih i iz jezika fazri u hrvatskom.

Za riječ murva prvi put čujem sad kad sam pročitao tvoj komentar :P.. XD Možda je riječ Murva više karakteristična za sjeverne krajeve Hrvatske (Zagorje, Međimurje) gdje pretpostavljam živiš kako govoriš kaj pa ti je ta riječ Murva uobičajena u lokalnom govoru.....XD...
