Similarities Between Pashto and Kurdish

How similar are Pashto and Kurdish? Pashto and Kurdish are two of the largest Iranic (Iranian) languages by the number of native speakers. Iranic people are an ethno-linguistic group of around 250 million people who have had a historical and continuous presence in regions stretching from western China to northern Syria, to parts of Georgia and Russia, as well as small pockets within the Arab world, all of them connected linguistically with a shared culture and history.
In this episode, Hakim, a Pashto speaker from Afghanistan, and Razgar, a Kurdish speaker from Iran, challenge each other with a list of words and sentences.
Pashto is the language of the Pashtuns, an Eastern Iranian language, and one of the two official languages of Afghanistan. It is also spoken in the west and northwest parts of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the Kurdish languages are part of the Northwestern Iranian languages with three main dialects, Kurmanji (Northern Kurdish), Sorani (Central Kurdish), and Southern Kurdish (Palewani or Xwarig/Xwarîn).
Sorani Kurdish (the dialect in this video) also known as Central Kurdish (کوردیی ناوەندی, Kurdîy nawendî) is a Kurdish dialect spoken in Iraqi Kurdistan, as well as the Kurdistan Province, Kermanshah Province, and West Azerbaijan Province of western Iran. It is one of the two official languages of Iraq, along with Arabic.
For all those who are familiar with the script. In the Sorani Kurdish writing system, vowels are almost always written as separate letters, instead of the original format of the writing system in which certain vowels are shown by diacritics or often excluded. You will notice this throughout the video in the subtitles, it is not a mistake.
After Persians, the 2nd and 3rd largest Iranian (Iranic) people are the Pashtuns and Kurds. The Baluchi people are considered the 4th largest group of Iranic people. The other groups include Mazanderanis, Lurs, Bakhtiaris, Gilaks, Talysh, Ossetians, the Parsis and Iranis of the Indian Subcontinent, the Pamiris with their core areas of settlements being Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Northwestern China, and the Gojal region of Pakistan, the Tats of Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia, the Yaghnobi minority of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, and the Kumzari of Oman. There are also groups which are not native speakers of an Iranic language but are believed to be Iranic based on their historical, genetic and cultural ties to the Iranians.

    I am incredibly sad to say, Razgar, his wife, and their 3 year old son were killed when PS 752 flight was shot down by the IRGC in Iran. They were on their way back to Canada after going to visit their parents for the holidays. I cannot describe the devastation! They were one of the most wonderful families I had ever met. Razgar, an amazing professor, highly knowledgeable, incredibly kind and friendly. His wife, Farideh was an amazing, sweet, kind, and smart person. Their son, Jiwan, was so cute and fun-loving. He had become friends with Serena (our daughter) recently having gone to each other's birthdays. Farideh was also pregnant at the time of the incident. Very heartbreaking! 😢😢

    Much of Swedish words are cousins to Kurdish. Many words are same with Swedish and those are physical words always used and are words only between Swedish and Kurdish not Pashto/Persian. Because Swedish, English and many other share Anatolian ancestors. Iranian arrived very late. Iranian language become influential in Kurdish almost because of the expansion of Zoroastrian religion.

    @MEDLER - Kürtler Iranian means Persian because Kurds don't have a country yet! Still, Iranian never were a consideration of Kurds in history! It's a modern classification without genetic proof as Iranic were a classification based on linguistics of one Iranic origin shown to be a lie. DNA of Kurds isn't related with India or near Indian. DNA of Kurds is not even related to Persian.

    @MEDLER - Kürtler According to scientists The language of Kurdish is mother to Europe's Indo-European languages and that's why the old classification of Iranic Must soon be reconsidered and changed, because loanwords should not classify people into subgroups.

    This was a great video and lovely idea. Persian, Pashto, and Kurdish languages (a diverse family of Northwestern Iranic languages rather than a singular language) are the three most important Iranian languages today by number of speakers (this was, of course, not the case historically). However, many of the words represented here are in fact loanwords from Middle Persian and New Persian, rather than genuine cognates from the Old Iranian stage. Examples of those would include "New" Persian: نو now, Sorani: نوێي nwe Pashto: نوي naway; or "Month" Persian: ماہ mah, Sorani: مانگ mang, Pashto: مياشث myasht, which also happen to be even more distant cognates with the English :)

  • @gutianwarrior7993

    @gutianwarrior7993

    5 жыл бұрын

    Not correct. If anything the Kurdish versions of said given examples are closer to the PIE cognates than Persian or Farsi. For example the word new in Kurdish is not nwe, rather it is -New, which comes from Proto-Indo-European *Néwos. Persian has undergone a change where the lax close vowels have been lowered, and thus é is now pronounced as -o, while Kurdish preserved the é. In a grammatic point of view, Kurdish is far more archaic and complex than Persian. Fx Gender: Persian has no grammatical gender. Kurdish does, masculine and female, and this determines the ezafe (see below), and the oblique for the 3rd pers. singular. Cases for pronouns In Persian, there are no cases for pronouns. 'Man' (I) remains 'Man' (Mine). Kurmancî however, does have cases. Ez -> Min Tu -> Te Ev/Ew (near/far) -> Wî/Wê (male/female) etc. Ezafe: The Persian ezafe is simply '-e'. Kurmancî however, has an extensive ezafe system, and you have to take into account gender, number, and the function of the word in the sentence. Examples: Mirovê bilind. - The tall man. Jina bilind. - The tall woman. Mirovekî bilind. - A tall man. Jineke bilind. - A tall woman. Jinên/Mirovên bilind. - The tall women/men. Gundên Kurd. - Kurdish villages. Gundên Kurdan. - The villages of Kurds. Etc. Circumpositions: Another feature that Kurdish has retained are circumpostions. Some examples: Di...de - In Ji...re - To Bi...re - With Ez bi hevalekî min re diaxivim. - I'm talking with a friend of mine. The prepostion part of the circumpositions can be combined with Kurdish contractions, which are: Ji+wî/wê - Jê Bi+wî/wê - Pê Di+wî/wê - Tê Li+wî/wê - Lê For example: Ez jê hez dikim. - I love her. Ez pê re diaxivim. - I talk with him/her. Split ergativity: Another feature which many Iranic languages used to possess is ergativity, where the object functions as the subject, if the verb is transitive. In Kurdish, this is present in the past and in the possessive. Min ew dît. - I saw him. (as opposed to 'Ez wî dîtim') Sê birayên min hene. - I have three brothers. Sounds: The distinctions between î and ê has been lost in Persian, which means that the words for, as an example, 'Lion' and 'Milk' are homonyms, while this distinction still exists in Kurmancî (Shêr and Shîr, respectively). Another one is that 'Xw' is lost in Persian, and is simply 'X', while it's used a lot in Kurmancî. Kurmancî, however, lacks the agglutinative features and enclitic pronouns. Can anyone compare the tenses? Does Persian have a vocative like Kurdish? Tenses: I'm not sure what tenses Persian lacks. I do know that it has a present continuous, which Kurmancî (for a quick, yet incomplete, guide, check English and Kurmanji Tense Names) lacks and instead uses the simple present for. 'Ez dixwim' can mean both 'I eat' and 'I am eating'. The future tense is formed differently however. In Kurmancî, the word '(d)ê'+the conjugated imperative of the verb is used, while in Persian, 'Kh(w)astan' (to want)+the stem of the verb is used. However, this is rarely used, and apparently, the present tense is often used in Persian. Kurmancî: Ez (d)ê bixwînim. - I will read/study. Persian: Man khwaham raft. - I will go. Persian seems to have a lot of tenses. I think the past narrative tenses have an equivalent in Kurdish in the verb form that ends on '-ama'. (bigeriyama?) Inflections: Afaik absent in Persian, Kurmancî has inflections for nouns that aren't the subject of the sentence. Ez jinê dibinîm. - I see the woman. Ez li wî welatî jiyam. - I lived in that country. And by the way mang means moon, not month. A month is -meh.

    @@gutianwarrior7993 This is a wonderful outline of the Kurmanji language as it compares to Persian, but truthfully I have no idea what this has to do with my post. There are no inaccuracies in what I wrote, but there are a few in yours. Particularly in your use of "Persian" when in fact you mean "Western Persian", or at least the standardized version of that language as spoken in Iran. The Persian varieties distributed throughout Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan DO make the distinction between "i" and "e" i.e. sher "lion" vs. shir "milk", pronounce the word "new" as naw and nav, and in Afghan dialects "xw" has been retained. Also, I was using the Sorani language (NOT Kurmanji) when drawing comparisons to Persian and Pashto. In Sorani, mang means both month and moon. Finally, while it is interesting from a historical linguistics standpoint that Kurmanji has retained some more features from the Old Iranian stage, grammatical complexity or analytic vs. agglutinative morphology has no bearing on the expressive power or beauty of a language. Take, for example, the English language.

    Pahlevuni Well written, but again since we only know Middle Persian and not fx Median, we cannot say for sure that the Kurdish terms derived from Middle Persian. The Kurds also had a word for new before Middle Persian, and I am sure it is from PIE.

  • @Pahlevuni

    @Pahlevuni

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@gutianwarrior7993 Thank you Gutian Warrior. However I must point out that there is no evidence that Kurmanji, Sorani, or another Kurdish branch languages descend from Median or related dialects. In fact, all of the evidence points against it. Take, for example, the many modern "Pamir languages" such as Shughni or Munji. These languages are distributed in an area historically assumed to be Sogdian, Bactrian , or Saka speaking, and while we have no attestation of the Pamir languages' Middle or Old Iranian stages, they demonstrably do not descend from Sogdian, Bactrian, or Saka dialects through reconstruction. Instead they must be the survivors of the numerous smaller, remote Eastern Iranian languages and dialects that never enjoyed widespread use or official patronage. Kurdish languages, and Pashto for that matter, share this common fate, however their comparatively larger number of speakers and wide distribution is largely the product of recent migrations and political factors over the past 2-3 centuries. Finally, I was pointing out that most of the Sorani words represented in this video are borrowings from Persian (such as gul, panir). I used the words "new" and "month" as examples of true cognates rather than Persian borrowings.

  • @gutianwarrior7993

    @gutianwarrior7993

    Pahlevuni And how do we know that they are borrowings from Persian? They are not. Perhaps Middle Persian, but again who says so? In principal Persian could have borrowed it from Proto-Kurdish? It is not as if the Kurds did not have flowers prior to the arrival of the Persians. I am simply asking out of curriosity, how do we know that fx gul derived from Persian? I am asking because I dont know, not because I want to be flippant. :) And as for no evidence of Kurdish being of Median descend, we dont know yet, since the Median language has not been attested widely, but the few cognates that we know so far go a long very good with Kurmanji Kurdish, fx dog is kucik in Kurmanji Kurdish but a female puppy is space, and in Median it is Spaca for dog. And we could also take the historical accounts into consideration. Fx the Turks of Turkey call themselves Kurmanj, which means Son og Manj, Manj could very well be an indicator of Median, or an ephonym. Not only that. Armenian historians called the Kurds by the name Median all the way into the high Middle Ages, and reffered to them as the people of Mark’ (Median). Ex, Chronicle of Michael the Great, Patriach of the Syrians: “When the nation of the Mark' [Medes, i.e., the Kurds] who resided in the mountains of Chgheroy and in the Tiwrewand country learned about this, they alerted each other and assembled 30,000 [fighters] and came to Nisibis and provoked the Turks.” Or Hethum: "Postea vero Sarraceni amiserunt dominium Egipti et Medi, qui Cordins vulgariter dicembantur; regni Egipti dominium occupaverunt." (Afterwards the Arabs lost control of Egypt; and the Medians; "who were called Kurds." Became the rulers of Egypt). ia601802.us.archive.org/23/items/ChronicleOfMichaelTheGreatPatriarchOfTheSyrians/Chronicle_Michael_Syrian.pdf books.google.dk/books/about/Europas_Folkestammer.html?hl=da&id=rR0PAAAAYAAJ&redir_esc=y

    @@memetcanaydn5769 Thank you. I don't want to get into politics on this channel, but one thing I can tell you is, the support of the USA for you isn't out of understanding or love for your nation, but for a specific political agenda. That is why it never has and never will be consistent. However, the support of Persians, Pashtuns, Baloch people and others is out of love and genuine camaraderie. This is why I hope videos such as this can show others how much we have in common, including our shared history and culture, as a means of bringing people closer together!

    The Pashto guest (sadly like most Pashto guests on this channel) seemed to not have very good command of Pashto. Where the Kurdish guest said something like "Emro Baran Na Bare" (sorry if I messed it up I don't speak Kurdish) for "It is not raining today", the Pashto guy should have immediately understood that. Because although he said "Nan Baran Nakegi", in correct Pashto we say "Nan Baran Na Warezhi/Waregi". The "Bare" of Kurdish is the same word as the "Ware" of Pashto which means to pour, but its simply replacing the B with the W. Just like the word for apple in both languages does the opposite... instead of using B, Kurdish uses W in "Sew" and Pashto uses B in "Seb"! Infact, if you go to many Pashtun villages, including mine, they actually say "Sew" exactly like Kurdish, not "Seb" or "Sib" for apple. I am a Pashtun (but can speak Farsi) and Kurdish actually sounds way more similar to Pashto than Farsi does, so it was strange for this Pashto guest to say he understood Kurdish more because he spoke Farsi.
