People are so cynical these days "not in the book, its not the hobbit" these people are so annoying. We have six great films and I'm grateful that Jackson came back 10 years later and completed the story. LOTR + Hobbit = Masterpiece

Yes, you'll always find whiners and haters when it comes to The Hobbit, but I love the LOTR movies and I love some parts of The Hobbit as well, Middle-earth is just perfect.

Tibori Andrei Yes, this is so true. I am a die-hard Jackson Middle-Earth fan and I will own all the extended editions when The Battle of The Five Armies EE is released,

Will James Three fantastic films, one fairly decent/OK film and two pretty mediocre ones. (LOTR trilogy, AUJ, and DOS & BOTFA in that order) The LOTR films are masterpieces, but calling the Hobbit films masterpieces is no more than a big stretch. They're enjoyable, but far from masterpieces. Of course, you can call anybody who has an opinion - one that doesn't involve seeing everything as perfectly flawless - a "whiner", but the point is that The Hobbit films are just lacking, especially when put next to the LOTR films. There's hardly any denying in that. You fail to realize that many people don't have a problem with deviations from the book overall, they just have a problem with it when it's poorly done, which is an entirely logical reason. If the original was better than the changed outcome, then of course people will end up complaining about stuff.

Nathan H. We all have our views but I think the Hobbit is a masterpiece, it had good acting, great music score, good action scenes, great special effects (slightly too much CGI), magical sense of adventure and a fantastic story.

Will James The musical scores don't even come close to packing the same punch as the LOTR soundtrack's. They are great, but not amazing like the LOTR scores are. The action scenes are most of the time flat-out ridiculous and Michael Bay Transformers-versions of medieval battles. There is WAY too much CGI - things in LOTR looked much better and more realistic. In The Hobbit, almost everything looks fake and at times even utterly ridiculous. Too many attempts to appeal to the general moviegoing audience. Character development is sacrificed by adding way too many characters and poor attempts at comic relief like Alfrid. And so on and so on... They're certainly enjoyable films, more like popcorn flicks, but nothing like the LOTR films. Now those were masterpieces... what happened, Peter?

It deeply effected me. I read The Hobbit in 5th grade, and looking back his dying words to Bilbo "If more people valued food and cheer..." is a thing I find myself holding onto these days.

I love this video and keep coming back to it. There's a couple moments that would have been great to see together as well. One is Gandalf's conversation about Gollum with Frodo in Moria (from Fellowship of the Ring), paired with the moment that Bilbo spares Gollum's life in An Unexpected Journey. The other is Bilbo saying "I'm going on an Adventure!" in the An Unexpected Journey paired with him saying "I think I'm quite ready for another adventure!" in The Return of the King. It really completes his whole story.

Thank you or sharing this, I am so glad. Haha you'are right there a quite a few other moments that I missed and are not in the video, haven't even ever thought of those two you just mentioned. From the top of my head now, as another missed similarity, I think there's a voiceline from Smeagol in the Hobbit riddle scene and somewhere in Return of the King he says something like "up, up, up the stairs" referring to the Cirith Ungol steep stairs that they climb.

The only noticeable omission I can think of is not showing Legolas to be the one to reveal Strider's true name at the Council of Elrond after the clip between he and his father talking about it, but great job all the same.

Yes and one is small but I still thing is important. In An Unexpected Journey when is rain and Dori says to Gandalf could you stop the raining. Gandalf says if you want to change the weather of the world you should find yourself another Wizard. Gandalf was clearly talking about Saruman since in The Fellowship of The Ring Saruman send them the snow storm.

unfortunately I did not have the pleasure if watching the lotr trilogies when it came out. I watched the hobbit first and I enjoyed it....until I saw the lotr trilogies and it was 100x better. The fights, music and characters were just way better than the hobbit....in my opinion of course.

Right. The Hobbit is Bilbo's adventure...where he stumbled into The One Ring and Gollum. Bringing the Shire and Hobbits to Sauron's attention after Gollum is captured and tortured 50 years later. Gandalf learns the full truth of Gollums' ring and that round about kicks off Frodo's troubles.

That bit between Legolas and his dad at the end of the Hobbit trilogy is ridiculous. Bilbo set out with the dwarves when he was an early middle-aged hobbit of 50 and the Lord of the Rings starts on his 111th birthday. In the books there was a gap of 22 years between Frodo receiving the Ring and setting out on his quest. Strider was human and looks 40ish in the Lord of the Rings. For him to be a 'young ranger' (say 15 at the youngest) at the end of The Hobbit, by the start of the Lord of the Rings he would have to be at least 75 and if the gap in the books is taken into account he would be 97!

wolf crow The timeline in the movie is different from the books. In the two towers extended edition, Aragon tells Eowyn he is 87. , making him in his twenties for movie purposes. However, by the book timeline he would have only been a child if Legolas went to look for him. PJ skipped time in places in the LOTR trilogy, especially with Frodo leaving the Shire.

I'll go with that! If I remember correctly, in the books Frodo leaves about 22 years after Bilbo's party at the age of 55. He was hardly the stripling he's portrayed to be in the films. Although I thought Elijah Wood was a pretty poor casting choice anyway - or perhaps it was the directing. Tolkien's Frodo was a truly stalwart type and I find it hard to imagine him spending most of the story looking like a dying consumptive on the verge of throwing up. It was Frodo's resilience that made him the hero of the book.
