I'm dying to know what happened behind the disaster that was Simcity. You know, the one that killed Maxis? What the hell happened? I've never bought a AAA game before that caused the publisher to give me a free AAA game as an apology. And EA claims it was ALL on Maxis.

If Maxis even attempts to do something so blatantly BS modders would just create a mod within two weeks to allow offline play. Thankfully we live in a world where Maxis wasn't bought out by a morally corrupt cooperation like EA that would force them to do this.

​@@jevogroni4829Yeah, garbage. Without that garbage, there would be no technology to allow you to post that statement. Just because you personally don't like something, doesn't make it bad. Yes, Simcity is a fun game that teached a lot of kids the very very very basic of City planning (it's like one single university lecture amount), but if you take the percentage of kids that actually used that knowledge to become city planners, it's probably the most ineffective leaning method that ever existed. So maybe think twice about calling textbooks garbage as one of these might be the reason you survive a disease at one point.

Hard to believe I played this on a submarine in 1992. I used a nice PC in the torpedo room using a pirated (shit-maybe I bought it then) game that everyone loved. We also played some King's Quest down submerged.

I had SIM City Classic and 688 at home, but when I deployed I carried a copy of Harpoon on 3.5" Floppy and used a PC in the Ships Library to play on. This was 91-93 time frame on the USS Eisenhower.

Clint, you're something special. You are one of the reasons i no longer watch tv. Content creators like you are the future and you are a pioneer with select others. The first SimCity I remember playing was on NES or SNES. My wife rented it for me early 1990s. Maxis was founded the same year I met the girl who became my wife. My soulmate. She got me SimCity 2000 at Walmart around 1996. She passed away Jan 3 a few weeks back. I cant live without her yet here I am. I love you Little One. And Interplay ruled!!

At the same time Sim City showed me how complex and fragile a city can be and how symbiotic it is, it also helped to improve my way of thinking about everything. Not only cities I started to be more analytic, looking at stuff trying to think the back-end of things. What was behind something in order to get to where it was. Not only Sim City, of course, but it definitely had it part on that

I never knew where the "klapaucius" cheat came from, that's so interesting!

Remember a friend in school showing me this in the early 90s. There were only 3 kids allowed to touch the school (not classroom) computer back then and we were 2 of them. So many memories of causing carnage for fun. Truly one of the all time great titles 😍

I was first introduced to SimCity (2000 version) in a tech class. My friends and I would play the hell out of that game. We loved it so much we ran to the store and purchased our own copies. Some years later, Streets of SimCity came along and I bought that as well. I loved being able to drive through my own creations. It wasn't too shabby but it did have its faults. Oddly enough, when looking for a review of it, I stumbled upon Clint's video in 2010 and I've been watching him ever since. And for that, I am grateful.

For a brief while in my school, they had one Windows 95 computer. I got into a lot of trouble after I changed all the desktop icon names to "Internet Explorer" and changed the icons to the IE Logo. The school thought I had irreversibly damaged their investment.

Wow, 30 years! That last sentence hit me in the gut. My aging gut.

At the end of this video I said to myself, “LGR, this is why I love your content.“ I’m late to the party, but I’ve been playing Cities Skylines for the last few weeks, and it takes me right back to my days playing SimCity in the 90s. This video also takes me back, thanks!

This video brought back nostalgic memories of playing the game on my CGA monitor. It was the first game that I pulled an all nighter on. My father woke up at 6am and ordered me to bed.

I always loved SIM City. It's sad what happened to the franchise

I bought a copy of A Pattern Language after watching this video when it dropped and it is FASCINATING.

Clint, another great retrospective!! I’m always waiting for these, so much dedication and so much fun

I have such an emotional connection to this game that the GRAPHICS MODE SELECTION SCREEN at 7:53 makes my heart beat harder. The other game that does that to me is the original Civilization. I was so young I had no idea what I was doing, but I loved planning and developing my cities. Such a joy to play with. Oh, the memories.

We had a computer class in my CT middle school where the whole class would play Sim City 2000 and get graded on how your city did. It got cut eventually though.

I was in love with the SNES version. In that version traffic could be avoided entirely by building only mass transit; no roads.

Love the SNES version, it's the one I grew up with. The first version I played was the DOS version on my dad's work PC with a monochromatic display but when I got my SNES I quickly got that version. Its music, art style, bonus buildings etc are so amazing.

Holy *crap*, you just reminded me of the Interplay FMV version! It came in the Interplay All-Nighter Anthology, a big multi-disc collection with Sim City FMV, Cyberia, Blackthorne, Frankenstein, Castles, *all four* Battle Chesses, and a Descent II demo! I was six years old, and those discs were the only things I played for like a YEAR. Crazy the memories you just brought rushing back..

Oh man, this game. I remember one specific scenario very well: the nuclear meltdown one. You were supposed to manage the city up until the meltdown happened, and then afterwards it challenged you to recover as best you could before a deadline. But even as a kid, I was eagerly looking for ways to "break the system", and found it on this scenario: simply bulldoze all the nuclear power plants and replace them with coal ones at the beginning of the scenario. If I remember correctly, there are five of them, a few of which are placed out at the edge of the map. When the game goes to trigger the nuclear meltdown, it goes "hey wait a minute, there's no nuclear power plants!" and grants you an instant victory.

Excellent video! I revisited Sim City (via the Win 3.1 Classic version) recently and had a lot of fun with it, and it spurred me to check out some of the later ones I missed like 2000 and 3000. I think I have the most fondness for the SNES version thanks to its updated visuals and relaxing music, but playing with a keyboard and mouse via the PC version is great.

Downright captivating video. I'm particularly enthused over your recollections of how it felt to be playing SimCity back in the day - I had a similar feeling playing Sims 2 for the first time in '09.

Same here, although I still have Sim Copter & Sim Driver. Both came in set with Sim City 2000. I loved using my custom built cities with Copter & Driver. I actually used cheat codes to give MORE money to start with. If you can get your hands on Copter & Driver, and still have the ability to play, I HIGHLY recommend them....

Traffic problems can literally be fixed by replacing every single road tile with rail. I do remember that much.

Pooper Scooper micro transactions are great in games, they give you the option to change your gameplay and give the game a longer lease of life, the issue is companies like EA are abusing them making games unplayable and unenjoyable if you don’t fork out, Micro transactions aren’t killing EA, EA is killing Micro transactions. Until people stop falling for it then EA will never die.

i teared up on this. i was 10-11 when my brother brought home the SNES version and soooo many countless hours playing it... this brought me right back! i wanna play it again now. the gardening analogy i definitely understand.

The SNES version was hands down my favorite, I can't be the only one.

Fate of Atlantis has to be one of the best games ever. Me and my siblings spent a week or two on what felt like a movie the entire time! Some puzzles were awfully hard though :D

Great video. This brought back memories. I remember being in Software Etc. in the Spring of 1990 and my dad asking the employee if this was a good game, hearing that it was one of the best games out and then buying it for me. I also remember photocopying that copy protection sheet numerous times on different settings. Of course, I also remember playing the game a lot and feeling a bit grown up because it felt like a grown up game.

"Cyberiada" by Stanisław Lem was one of my most favourite books in my childhood. And I was lucky enough to read it in original :-) In overall S. Lem was a genius, not only great writer.

You seem to forget that computer games were for kids (and nerds) back then. It was not just about definition of games, but also about their place in society. These "Software Toys™" and other stuff was about elevated stuff above being a simple game. The same type of stuff is happening now, but the opposite way. Simple games are treated as high art because we have abandoned true art for children's toys.

Yup and heck even Minecraft isn't a 'real game then'. Limiting what kinds of games can be made is exactly the thing to avoid. There are still people who only know games to be violent, gory and sexualized.

SimCity is by far my all time favorite game. It’s a massive shame what EA did with SimCity (2013). Cities Skylines just doesn’t fill the same hole that SimCity managed to fill.

30 years later, and with a DMR filled game with barely anything in it, and maxis is now closed, owned by a greedy game publisher, will wright quit triple a gaming and that publisher is currently ripping itself a new one by its own greedy practices

All of your videos are top quality, entertaining and well researched, but I especially appreciate this one, and also your review of The Sims 1. (Partially because I worked on The Sims 1, the multi player version of SimCity for X11 workstations, and open source Micropolis, but also for the same reasons I enjoy all of your other reviews.) Dang, it was hard to play Sim City in 1989 when we got our 286 with Sim City preinstalled but no manual... But I got hang of it eventually.

Please explain!! You had a 286 in '89, received a copy of Sim City without a manual? Shit -- I only had a 8086 cpu with 512k RAM back then. I didn't even get my first modem until at least a year later!! BBS's were just starting out. *PLEASE EXPLAIN!!*

I poured so many hours into the sequal SimCity 4. When I was 10 - 12 years old I would play it from sun up to sun down. It was the first computer game that I bought new from Walmart. A few years later it became a large reason why I began watching KZread and most importantly LGR.

When I was a kid I would go right to the game aisle and just read the back of boxes until my parents got done with whatever “boring” shopping they were doing. The Simcity box for some reason always drew my attention, despite already owning it.

Thanks for the Sim City episode. I don't think I ever played this game so it was nice to get the history of the game.

Really glad you're mentioning Lem, you should read some of his other novels if you haven't yet. Probably right up your alley.

had that exact box in our computer room. I was 6 in 1994 when I played it. Had a profound impact on my love for strategy/sim games.

Hey Clint! You should give Odd Realm a try, maybe do a review of it here. It's only 10 bucks on steam, it's already pretty good and the developer is super responsive. It's a colony management sim with graphics that are reminiscent of DOS games (the sprites remind me of Lemmings), and the music is like something out of old Squaresoft games.
