Silverlands Manor - The Actors Orphanage (Abandoned)

Silverlands is a large country house in Chertsey, Surrey, R. Porter, Esq. a local brewer, first purchased the land in 1805 from Fan Grove estate and built the original mansion, an estate has existed here under the name of 'Silverlond' since at least 1420 according to town records. First owned by Vice-Admiral the Rt. Honourable Sir Henry Hotham KCB GCMG (born 19 February 1777 - died 19 April 1833) He joined the Navy in 1790 (aged 13), a hero of the Napoleonic wars(1803-1815) in the early 19th Century. Silverlands was used as the Hotham family home until approximately 1887. Another notable owner was the (MP)
Frederick Alers Hankey (born 29 March 1833 - died 15 February 1892) who was an English banker and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1892. He also played first class cricket for Marylebone Cricket Club in 1852 and 1853. In 1885 Hankey was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Chertsey. In 1887 he acquired the Silverlands estate.
The Actors' Orphanage was started in 1896 by Kittie Carson at Croydon and was established as the Actors' Orphanage Fund in 1912. In 1915 the Orphanage moved to Langley Hall at Langley (was in Buckinghamshire - now in Berkshire). The orphanage was both a home and a school to approximately 60 children.
The home and school was moved to Silverlands at Chertsey, Surrey in 1938 where it remained until 1940. In September 1940 the Orphanage was evacuated to the USA where the children were housed in New York City at the Edwin Gould Foundation.
After the war ended the Fund established a home (once again at Silverlands, Chertsey). This arrangement ended in 1958 and the Actors' Orphanage ceased to exist.
Over the years many from the theatrical profession have given time and money to the running of the orphanage including some who became presidents of the orphanage among whom are Sir Gerald du Maurier, Noël Coward, Laurence Olivier and the last president Lord Attenborough.
It's recent history is more controversial, after having served as an orphanage and a nurses training college for much of the latter 20th Century, in 2001 plans were made to relocate patients from Wolvercote Clinic for convicted paedophiles.
With 23 schools located within 2.5 miles of the Silverlands estate, one primary school just 5 minutes down the road, this caused a local outrage, on Oct 26th of that year the first of many candlelight vigils were held outside Silverlands by protestors, these were repeated weekly between 17:00 and 19:00 for several months. During these events the buildings went under intense refurbishment and maintenance, the ultimate bill for this and the required security arrangements almost hit £5'000'000. After a lot of debating and protests on 4th July, 2002, it was confirmed by the Home Office Minister that Silverlands will not become the home of the Wolvercote paedophile clinic.
The Security arrangements in place today I imagine might remain from that time period (2002), As well as the irregular patrols which after my explore (by luck) i only just missed meeting one guard with his van parked at the end of the drive on my way back from the tip across the road. Had i triggered this visit i wonder?
I had read that it is surrounded by jagged metal topped fencing with cameras around the gate & driveway area, the building itself has a fair amount of cameras, PIR sensors & loudspeakers located at strategic points. Knowing all this & after reading reports of the Securities quick call-out response times from those that got busted, i was half expecting to get caught also. So after making my entry i remembered some advice i had read, that would give me the most time possible inside before being asked to leave & so i made my way up the internal stairwell to the roof, then i began my top down explore. As i thought time was probably going to be short inside i began working my way quickly downwards. Having seen many many photo's of the building before my visit, it was really quite sad to see it's current condition for myself, the interior in places is not looking so great anymore, mostly damage from water leaking through the roof & many of the more ornate & beautiful rooms on the ground floor have collapsing ceilings & damaged floors, surprisingly the electricity still works throughout the building however, my apologies for a few blurred photo's & the lack of video footage.

I used to live in Silverlands back in the 1950's. At that time hundreds of acres of land belonged to the property. I went back in the mid 90's and it was a nurses college. I wasn't able to get inside, so I enjoyed this video. But I don't really remember many things I saw. The back courtyard I do remember, part of this used to be stables, but we had no horses. I think around 50 children lived there at that time. It was a fun time living with so many kids. We all used to go to private schools and were driven to them each day. I went to one in Shepperton. Though I lived there I wasn't an orphan, my mother ran the kitchens.....we lived up near the top of the place. The kitchens were below ground level fronting onto the courtyard. There is a bomb shelter from WWII in the grounds on one side of the house. When I was last there it was pretty overgrown. If you are interested in the history of Silverlands one of the kids who lived there for around ten years has written a book of the house name.....should be able to find it on the Internet.

Gimme gimme gimme...I'm in love with the wood the doors with cast iron.... the Windows ....they need to be reused...we are suppose to get better with time...instead they throw up buildings and homes with no real effort.... This has beautiful structure ...how many hours went in to each part of that building they thought about every room with hard work ...talent and passion...I enjoyed this video and watched it several times and pausing it to gaze at it ...so elegant it's quietly fading away....

What an absolutely stunning estate you've shown us. Thank you for the incredible footage and photographs. It is heartbreaking to see what has become of such an incredibly gorgeous, ornately designed structure that has so much amazing history. I so wish someone wealthy would purchase it, and give it the love and care it deserves. Sure, a rehab would be crazy expensive, but it would make a spectacular Inn and Restaurant. I can picture two and four tops with fine linen and china in the grand ballrooms. The grounds are perfect for weddings and special events. That grand central staircase, with its gleaming polished wood, leading up to posh, elegant guest rooms. Perhaps my imagination is getting away with me, but it's not often that you see such an amazing place with such grandeur. I do hope someone is able to save it. It's almost too sad to imagine it falling into complete ruins.

Well done, mate. It's a real shame that someone didn't repair the roof before the rain caused this extent of damage. The black mold is scary! I live two kilometers from the Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas, United States. It' s only 100 years old, but it is quickly getting to this stage of disrepair. Again, it's the lack of response to a leaky roof that is the culprit for most of the damage. I don't usually yearn for money, but in cases like these, I wish I had the finances to help. Again, good job on the video. I appreciated the lack of chit-chat that often accompanies these tours. I enjoyed the melancholy music. Very appropriate.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen.It is how you would imagine the Royal's living..The carvings, ornate lights, those carved wood paneling, those fire places....Absolutely stunning. Why hasn't anyone bought this? The building itself looks sound and strong,so it seems it could easily be repaired...This is too beautiful a building to just let it decay... And by investing in it's future, it would pay you back 3,4,5 times over,if you think about holding weddings or functions there...... I hope someone saves this building and breathes new life into such an incredible old building.😊

The craftpersonship (p.c.) is stunning, many details, chandeliers, and the ceilings awe inspiring. It has to be property somebody watches over because there is so much glass, but very few broken. The interior doors, which were plentiful and ornate had their all their panes. And of course there is the electricity.

Even a state of decay this beautiful mansion stills maintains much of its beauty and charm. Thanks for posting this video. So sad that the place probably cannot be saved, but perhaps the lovely chandeliers and some of that fantastic woodwork and some of the beautiful molding can!

Beautiful building. Such a shame to see how it is being left to crumble. Very soon it with be beyond the point where repair and renovation is an option. It will become just another one of the many great buildings we had in the UK that were lost due to neglect.

I stumbled over your channel just last night while clicking through endless urbex videos from all over the world. I love the amount of history you dig up and share with us! Have you ever considered doing a live commentary as you walk around exploring? You seem to know the locations' stories long before you visit them and I think you could easily rival some shows on tv if you experimented with it. Not to nitpick of course. I love your videos as they are. Keep up the awesome work!

minustwelve Glad you found my urbex channel & thanks for your kind words, i have tried narratives on earlier videos, although it's not my interest, the production of pro type video...i just enjoy urbex & sharing it...i will try to improve the video & sound techniques if i can, as i'm often disappointed with my camera work...sorry if you get dizzy or seasick...it's difficult to remember everything when i'm recording...early days! Thanks for looking.

+maureen marow i used to know squaters who did just that some groups would live there then have parties and the places would get wrecked others were more forward thinking and would set up actual comunities and work shops and stuff and do places up so yeah, i agree with the sentiment you expressed, it is terrible how anyone from any backgroound can become homeless over night and the amount of ex services on the streets etc etc

I totually agree..There are homeless people out there that would appreciate any roof over their head especially coming up to Winter. They could move in like it is and repair this building in their own time. I feel so annoyed seeing these beautiful buildings fall into disrepair.😢

This is one of the saddest abandoned places I've seen so far, because it can still be repaired. It is a shame that this historical place is left to the elements to rot. If no one has the money to renovate, the very least the owner could do is remove most of the interior and let the place live on in other buildings. There is enough usable materials here to completely finish the interior of several houses. To let it just sit there and rot is a real waste of craftsmanship. The doors, windows, ornate wood trim, ceilings and especially the floors could bring lots of money. Using reclaimed materials is a preferred way to build for many here in U.S.

So true. My love of history and historical relics is the reason I hate to see old buildings torn down, but as I commented before, the materials are worth reusing. There's enough interior trim in this house to finish the interior of many houses.
