Silver Production from Silver Nitrate using a Copper Pipe

Ғылым және технология

Here I show you how to recover silver from silver nitrate. I began by placing 130.5 grams of silver nitrate into 500 ml of distilled water. A copper pipe (cleaned first with a Dremel to remove the oxide coating) was suspended in the solution and left for 30 min. The silver nitrate reacts with copper to form crystals of silver metal and a blue solution of copper nitrate:
2 AgNO3 + Cu → Cu(NO3)2 + 2 Ag
The first and last 30 seconds are in real time, the rest has been sped up to highlight the reaction. The precipitate is then filtered, washed several times with boiling water to remove the copper nitrate, then melted in a high-temp oven to produce 82.87 grams of 98-99% pure silver.

Dear Darryl. Thanks for your video. If I use a more concentrated solution of silver nitrate, like 500 gr in 500 ml of destilled water, may I produce the proportional quantity of silver as well? I've read that Silver nitrate has a very high water solubility (2190 gr/l at 20 C), so that means that I could make a more concentrated solution obtaining by that a higher concentrated copper nitrate solution as well. thanks.

Hi, I've been refining my silver using 50/50 nitric/distilled water mix. I need to ask you why your nitrate is clear and why mine is dark blue? The reaction is identical when dropping the silver from the solution, but I'm still left with a bright blue solution and I'm wondering if there's still silver left in there? I've kept the solution after filtering the silver crystals and added copper back to it just to see if any further crystals drop. The copper still mildly reacts but isn't producing more than a few small silver crystals over a day or so. Do you know how or if I can use the solution to try to remove any trapped silver by electrolysis? Just to throw another question at you, but I've also tried this with silver plate and ended up with a murky green solution after dissolving the silver plate in the nitric/water solution. Not sure why it went green, but thinking maybe the presence of nickel under the silverplate. When copper was dropped in to this solution, I got hardly any reaction.. I realise the silver content is low, but I'm wondering if the nickel could be interfering with the reaction? Any suggestions are gratefully received!

Paul Liff Seems like there might be other base metals involved. Is it possible you've mistaken silver plating for 900-925 silver? I did some silver plated spoons and the water turned blue/brown, and foamy. Electrolysis can always get the last bits out if you can manage the setup. Havn't done it yet myself.

@@drricket ok. Propane gets up to 2,000. But Mapp gas gets up to 3,200. So ok use Mapp to be sure. The main thing. Nothing else needs done before melting. See a guy said I can precipitate the silver with salt. But then I was told it doesn't work and it has to be put in the sun before it can be melted. But he didn't say how long, because he said salt doesn't work good. He said copper and melt. So I am checking, I don't want to mess up
