Cementing Silver Out of Solution (High Speed Chemical Reaction)

Ғылым және технология

Warning! This is much more dangerous than it looks! It's pretty and wants to kill you.
Precipitating "cementing" silver out of silver nitrate solution with copper. A beautiful chemical reaction that shows an exchanging of ions between silver and copper.

I don’t know why but this is just a gorgeous and satisfying process to simply watch. I wish you would do some eBay sales of either the cement, shot or bars. I’d buy it just because. Thank you for sharing. I watch this type of stuff to calm my nerves and help with my PTSD sometimes. So you are really doing good things and may not even know it!

How pure is your silver normally after you cement it? I know you’ll run it through the cell, but have you checked the purity of the cement silver?

Generally it's a fare estimate to assume it's apx 98% pure. Because when it forms some particles may also be trapped in the formation. The longer the copper is in the solution, the more likely you'll have impurities. Also, you must wash the cemented silver very well or you will carry over solution which of course contains impurities. I have tested my cement silver before and had .999 fine results if I do everything right. But there are certain tips you must adhere to in order to achieve that level.

Hello Jeff, Great video. Are you able to use the copper again, or is it one and done?👍

I use it until it begins to crumble. I don't want a bunch of bits of Cu in my Ag. But you can always melt down what's left into another Cu bar later.

You can basically tell when the reaction stops. But I usually let it sit for a few hours after to be sure.

It starts as dilute nitric acid. When silver is introduced, it becomes silver nitrate. When copper is introduced, it turns blue and becomes copper nitrate.

It's not converting copper into silver otherwise we'd all be loaded. The copper is more reactive and will easily force the silver out as the copper enters. Hope I answered this correctly.
