David Soul wrote this in 1977 in plymouth while in a nursing home with phnomonia while filming the film the Stick up on Dartmoor in January ❤i was a extra in the crowd scene set in 1930s ❤ Rest in Peace David Soul

Remembered my mum keeping records of David Soul songs, truly a beautiful song💚

I recall saying to a fellow lover of good songs that I thought Elvis would have also done a fine version of this underrated song.

My dad taught me the words to this back in the day 😍

Such a great song. It topped the chat in UK but only peaked at 52 in the US. I think the Americans clearly missed this one. A lot of times, when a song is not doing well in the chart, it does not reflect the quality of the song. I blamed those radio stations that did not put the song in their playlists. Many people were not even aware that such great song exists.

Back end of 2019 my sons 16 months this is the only song that gets him off to sleep. Also murdered this on karaoke but I was pissed as a newt which didn't help

This song was a surprise at the time. David Richard Solberg (David Soul) was a TV actor but the song was a collaboration between Tony Macaulay and Geoff Stephens, both prolific adnd successful songwriters at the time responsible for dozens of songs you'd instantly recognize.

He had more than that over here in the UK, Dave - but I once heard him explain in an interview that it was contractual problems with his label that finally brought his singing career to a sudden end.

sunryse111 , you’re right! I come from a DJ background of over 40 years and when a studio label and artist have disputes then the label does not send your record or tape (back in the day) to the stations and the artist just fades into obscurity. The only chance you have is to get lucky and have a rebel DJ that will listen to those songs that sit in stacks on a shelf that were mailed by labels or artists begging to be heard. If they happen to get played, usually on some late night FM station, and the audience likes what they hear, then you might get lightning in a bottle like The Kingsmen or Steam did.

Can someone tell me was this song about drugs and silver lady was the needle ?
