    This game is wonderful at portraying its setting properly, especially in terms of scale. So I have some theories about the story of this game! Firts of all I think the 4 monsters represent the 4 horsemen of apocalypse. The final one I think represents war, the tree one is famine, and the first is death. The crab one could be pestilence, but it could also be a take on Neil Gaiman's version so polution?? Since it raises from a pile of garbage and it's body is also garbage. The war one is pretty obvious since it literally shoots bombs, and the famine is pretty straight forward too. This would make sense seeing that the game is set in a post apocalyptic world. Second of all the "animals" in the big ship aren't actually animals. They're humans with animal masks, like the "birds" in the tree. You can see this when you look at the huge deer statues at the center. They're clearly wearing masks and the straps are visible. And looking at the robes and the tapestries and the crosses it's pretty aparrent that this was some sort of nature based religious order, that rose from the ashes of the apocalyptic world to destroy the four horsemen of apocalypse and hence stop the apocalypse. Seems like something went wrong tho and they were too late, since there is no one left on the ship. OR the divers are some sort of machines and everything operates as it should to clean the planet for humans return like in wall E or City of Ember. This was my first theory comment, sorry for any typos! Hope someone finds this interesting

  • @verdantViridity

    @verdantViridity

    2 жыл бұрын

    The divers reminded me of Inside, and the animal masks (cuz I was wondering if Manly would notice that too) remind me of the whole concept of animal patrons-- totems, zodiac, Egyptian pantheon, dæmons, lusii, fursonas, you get it. Tying those two concepts together, possessing other animals may have previously had the spiritual significance of strengthening that personal connection with one's patron. But maybe that ended up atrophying this civilization's sense of boundaries between individuals, species, organic life and machine, perceiving them all as a hivemind. So what we see now could be the consequences of deviating the natural order as they lost restraint with their practices.

    This is a good analysis! Also, at 27:14 there's this rat-like/dog person blowing 1 trumpet in his hands, with 5 trumpets on his head. The (Biblical) apocalypse is supposedly preceded by 7 trumpets. The 6th trumpet would release angels and their army from the Euphrates, a big _river_ . Could be coincidental but I thought it was interesting that he had only 6 trumpets and the 6th is water related (at least 3 trumpets are water related I think). The 7th signifies the end of the world as we know it, and doesn't seem to have been blown yet!

  • @theGhostWolfe

    @theGhostWolfe

    I noticed the masks as well, but I have a theory that there’s nothing “organic” within the diving suits, they’re empty suits animated by the possessing energy. The hundreds of discarded suits aren’t dead, there simply isn’t enough life energy to animate them all.

    The designs, the backgrounds, the mystery the locations tell, all of that is fantastic. The puzzles are fairly solid too, getting a lot out of that possession mechanic. I feel like this is a game in the "Style over Substance" category. As touched upon in the end of the video, it lacks some sort of thematic cohesion. Everything is just kinda there and rarely tells the story as to why. It's so dense and rich in atmosphere and, at least in my opinion, fails to tell any significant stories with it. Overall, a really beautiful and well made game that sadly failed to capture me with its world.

    @BonnCharlie And that's absolutely fine. It's just something that didn't grip me. There's definitely beauty in vagueness and leaving things to be questioned. But for me, that is ruined by how disconnected everything feels from any central theme.

  • @maysee2515

    @maysee2515

    @@MaverickHunterXZA there was clearly a flood of some form; that's why the forest was underwater, same with the city. The divers had to recover the souls that could be used as an energy source to power their machine. There is a story; it may not be one that would make sense in reality with actual physics, but it's a game and meant to be imaginary. It's fine if you want to argue there wasn't that deep a meaning to the story, but don't say there wasn't one at all, just because it's not a story you like doesn't mean it doesn't exist at all.

  • @MaverickHunterXZA

    @@maysee2515 Ah, there we go, you completely misunderstood me. I didn't say it did not have an overarching story, i said that its individual components, a.e. levels, enemies etc. lack cohesion and thus, don't convey their own story. Environmental Storytelling and such. A flooded forrest doesn't explain a living tree with straightjacket bird mask people in it, while everything else surrounding it was very grounded. There is no meaning behind why it keeps jumping between regular underwater fauna and flora and fantasy creatures that have no relation to anything else. The environment doesn't allude to any form of corruption or evolutionary challenges. The most cohesion the game showed was the horn blowing statue matching the murals in the temple area, connecting both together, alluding to a long lost civilisation. THAT is telling a story. The rest sadly didn't.

    Looks like these "people" power machines they make. Alot of 4's everywhere. I think each diver was the leader of their clan, that merged together, they all had opposing and different world views, and it helped in making the lifeform at the very end. They knew life could not survive w/e happened, so they put every one into some kinda of "battery" or stasis, awaiting the day they could return. They stored power or perhaps themselves into the sea bosses, they clearly use their tech in the designs - THEY made the big baddies to safeguard them, setting it up so the power they have can defeat each one without brute force. Either way, they were chained - they chained protag to the sea floor or w/e. Perhaps leaders collected each others souls - who heard multiple whispers from gaining the light power stuff - may be a collective, stored inside a machine and safeguarded. One clan is industrial, is possible one was close to nature, ect, and they made biological machinery together.

    Man, this game has atmosphere... Ironically. Personally I think it can also be a metaphor for human progress. The way every piece of machinery is mixed in with organic matter like how our current technology can mix and clash with nature, the way light is used and there's someone who is literally enlightened and shows others "the way". The fact that all the divers are swimming upwards towards the surface, away from darkness. Would it be too much of a stretch if I said the animalistic icons/gods could be symbolic of how we model our technology after nature's wonders? Idk if I'm looking way too deep into it but that's the vibe I got from this.

    It took me the whole game that the game seems to have some allegory to conception. You're playing as a swimmer; that's white at the end of each stage. You finish each stage by entering an orb looking thing, an egg of sorts. And the game ends with the big structure emitting energy, the conception. Also the end screen is just a whole bunch of swimmers with one leading them. What it ll means. I do not know. But it certianly represents some sort of conception.

    _Beautiful post-apocalyptic mythology_ A re-imagining of the Atlantis theory. Maybe it was an ancient alien civilization that deliberately planned and buried their civilization deep under the ocean, waiting for a time that man would need to re-populate the planet after some devastation. The bosses perhaps were placed as a defense against lesser beings who would die and not be able to activate the machine which released all the divers at the end. Each special diver, imbued with special powers - spiritual/electronic - certainly above those of mortals. The temple, the animal masked figures all reminded me of gods worshipped by the ancients, when animals were perceived as having higher power than humans. Idk that we were supposed to find a cohesive story from this. I think the game was more about putting us in awe of unfathomable depths, of ancient mysteries and civilizations, and possibilities. And the ever-weird amount of actual aquatic life, like the actual freaky Bobbit worms. I think you are an extremely proficient puzzle-solver MBH, and made the game look much easier than it is, judging by some critical Steam reviews. I could fully immerse myself and enjoy the game because of you excellent game play and editing. :)

    This is like saying in Portal AI characters should be running around the chambers doing stuff. It makes the puzzles more obstructive and people will try to regularly use those to solve puzzles. I understand you wanting more detail/life for the experience of it, but they kinda have a point about adding unessential items to a puzzle game- it ends up being more of a jumbled confusing mess that way. most of the puzzles here come off as simple and easy, but that's because they've designed it well; the tools you need are available, and there isn't a lot of excess "noise" that distracts from the nessessary elements.
