Silo Season 2 Burning Questions after the Season 1 Finale. Mysteries and theories to ponder before the new season of Silo arrives. Please subscribe! 👉 bit.ly/PetePeppers
Silo’s first season on Apple TV+ has been a huge success. The season 1 finale found the perfect balance of answering enough questions while leaving many more for fans to build theories about. The finale saw Jules become the first person in recent memory to not clean after she was sent outside. She survived because Walker and supply switched out the faulty tape and walked away from the Silo.
There are many unanswered questions going into Silo Season 2. Where will Jules go now that she left the Silo? How much air does she have? How many other Silos are there? Do they all have people in them and do they live by the same rules? What did Bernard run to the Server Room to do? What does his key fob with the number 18 mean? How will the people in the Silo react to Jules walking over the hill? This Silo Season 2 Burning Questions and Theories videos looks at all of these and many more. We also look a the recent AMA author and executive producer Hugh Howey did for additional answers about season 1.

The first season ends on a cliffhanger about what Juliette will do next, but Apple TV+ has renewed Silo for a second season that is filming right now. The season one finale delivered a lot of answers with several enduring mysteries for fans to ponder until the next season arrives. It’s not clear how the Silo residents will react to Jules’ refusal to clean, or what this means for Bernard and the future of the Silo.
The Silo is an underground world where the last 10,000 people on Earth live to stay safe from the toxic environment on the surface. The inhabitants aren’t aware of how it got there or why things are the way they are because a rebellion 140 destroyed their histories. Things take a turn when the Sheriff's wife starts asking questions and eventually asks to go outside. This is the cardinal rule of the Silo. Any spoken request to leave the Silo is granted, but it’s irrevocable, once uttered it’s determinative, in other words, it’s a death sentence.

Quite possibly. By the time they get over the hill the outside air has invaded the suit and they’re pretty much dead. So no need for the signal to go past that point. It’s also how the first sherif knew where his wife was laying. He wouldn’t have been able to see her if the broadcast was on.

I think the screen glitch was made by the film team to make the plot twist at the end more surprising. The whole time I thought Jules was gonna go outside, run over the hill and do gods no what in the green world. Only to have it taken away made it so surprising and a good visual plot twist

I am loving the feeling of not knowing and needing to know. I really love when TV shows treat viewers as inteligent agents and do not over-explain or abuse innecesary exposition. This spiralesque world-building reminds me of Lost, Westworld or Raised By Wolves.... Where every episode revals more and more details, later expanded in further seasons and then adding more mysteries. That is exactly how I like my sci-fi. Plus commentaries on social dynamics, class, religion, history, politics, technology and engaging flawed characters that develop and grow (The Expanse is also very good at this).

I also think that the "green" image (that flashed briefly onto the cafeteria screen and is on the cleaning videos on the hard drive) is a FAKE mystery, a way to direct any remaining conspiracy-minded, anti-authoritarian residents of the silo to search for the answers to the question that IT wants them to ask - "why can't I go outside since it looks like a paradise?" It might be why Judicial is apparently seeding relics throughout the silo even after they are found and catalogued, to get citizens thinking that "outside = good". Citizens that start asking THAT question can be disposed of fairly easily using faulty tape since they will eventually get the courage to put their beliefs to the test and ask to go outside. This keeps any troublesome citizens from asking the REAL question - "why is everyone lying to us about everything and controlling everybody?"

  • @iMajdy

I was thinking the same, I was like it must be the default state of that screen after the rewritten program with the depressed world was shut down with power and closed first. Who wants to see that land in the cafeteria? It's depressing for people, I thought the original point of that screen was to remind people inside the Silo, how the world looked like before and motivate them, to be a nice place for meeting, having lunch, coffee,... it also makes sense from the biophilia point of view, if you want to design a place for people you should consider this principle.

Maybe they're deeper than the oil basins.

As a book series reader myself, I'm curious to see how S2 will (or will not) deviate from it. As far as I can remember, S1 was fairly faithful. I too think Sims and his wife have ulterior motives beyond just grabbing power. I also think we'll see more of Luke. Bernard could pardon him in order to use his talent to restore the hard disk and check out what else he doesn't know. I think it's also likely they'll come up with a different explanation from the book as to why the catastrophe happened and how and why the silo project was started, to make it more appealing to international audiences. Since the flashing fob key used to page Bernard by "someone" (or "something": why not an AI?) opens the server room, it's fair to think that's where he stays in contact with the entity supervising the whole project. It's also likely to be the most hi-tech place in the silo, up-do-date to the latest tech "from before" the rest of the silo aren't aware of. IMHO the series has done a great job in revealing gradually how the silo society is kept low-tech intentionally. It's fair to assume hi-tech was what caused the catastrophe that forced them into the silos in the first place, and the Founders want to prevent it from ever happening again at all costs. We'll possibly know more about what is put in the water to make them forget. IMHO it's extremely unlikely all the previous knowledge (even what stars are) is wiped away in a matter of a few centuries without "something". We know they've been there for at least 140 years, because that's when the rebellion happened, but they can't have been there for much longer than a few centuies. If they had, they would have already run out of spare parts for their machinery, without factories to make them, and the construction would be much more crumbling than it is. Or are they supplied from "somewhere else" every now and then, unknowingly to the general population? For example: how many helmets can they reasonably have? Shouldn't they have run out of helmets already, with dozens of people already sent out to clean? Speaking of which: Where are the bodies of previous cleaners? We always see only Holston and his wife. I can't think it's just a hole in the script and/or in the CGI. Where's Jane Carmody? Has "anyone" carried them away? Why is nobody in the silo questioning it? Still the oblivion drug?

My questions now is what is Bernard or the people who control him hiding? Why build and try to act like there is this huge, elaborate lie if the outside world is actually bad? There are so many plot twists. Lets go through some of the points: -Why go after the flame keepers and try to stop them from having the red level relics if the world is actually the way it is displayed on the cafeteria screen? -Why make such a big deal out of stopping them? -And if they don't believe the screen, why not let some of them go outside for themselves to see that the world is actually the way it is, let them clean, and let them come back? Rebellion problem solved. -The fact that the people who saw the Georgia book seem to know immediately what they are looking at and how beautful it is, even though they have never seen anything like it and have been born and raised in a silo is simply unrealistic. It tries to play in for the audience, but people who would actually only know life in a silo would know nothing else and would probably not even understand the ''beauty'' in those pictures; hell, they'll find their home, the silo, beautiful. But that obviously goes against the narrative. -The fact the cafeteria screen flashed the lush earth for a second when the generator was turned down was pretty misleading, since it lead to viewers believing that the outside world is beautiful. They really tried to milk drama there. Saying that the computer glitched and suddenly displayed the hologram video onto the cafeteria display rather than the camera video is possible but extremely unlikely and unrealistic. -The only reason here for the entire operation trying to keep the Flamekeepers at bay has to be that Bernard (or the people who have tasked him to) are hiding something really bad. Or simply the reason is to create completely unrealistic and unnecessary drama for a movie. -Why even make it such a big deal and go as far as to create a whole hologram of a believable outside world just to make people clean the camera? This is simply going to stir up more problems, which I thought they wanted to avoid? -So confused.

In my opinion these are all points where the series screwed up, because the points don't exist in the books or are portrayed differently. For example in the books there are many kids tales about blue oceans and green meadows. Seeing the cafeteria images, people speculate if these stories are actually true or just kids tales. This makes sense to me. Because if you know the outside world only as grey, what stops you from believing that grey actually is beautiful and green looks bad? In the books advanced devices are banned, but there is no relic hunt like in the books.

I haven’t read the books but in addition to all the theories circulating, I’m particular curious about the ammonite symbol surfacing throughout the series. The silo is shaped like one. It appears in the opening credits. And in the Hanna episod, when Gloria dreams of being in the outside world, the first thing you see is her holding a pearlescent ammonite shell. They were extinct during the dinosaur era - so there’s definitely some allusion to a type of apocalypse. Be interesting to find out if this is actually significant or if I’ve just made it up.

i think the significance is the spiral shape (staircase of the silo) and that those fossils are made up of smaller independent sections but part of a larger whole, like project 50 is all 50 silo's but silo 18 is just a small section of that overall plan. that's how i interpreted it though.

As a reader of the books, one of the questions I have is why the show writers made the generator steam powered. It runs on petroleum in the books, which becomes important later. Also, the episode where they are repairing the generator, and have no way to turn off the steam, seems extremely unlikely considering the forward thinking that the builders of these silos have given each the systems. Not sure why the series writers would do that.

Was the steam vent ever addressed? To have steam for 150 years you need water. My guess the water at the bottom of the silo is from a huge underground lake near by. My guess is they built some kind of steam maker deep under the ground. The deeper you go underground the hotter it gets

  • @MichaelSmith-lm5sl

    @MichaelSmith-lm5sl

The steam vent was never explicitly addressed in the Silo book or TV show. However, there are a few possible explanations for its existence. One possibility is that the steam is coming from an underground lake. As you mentioned, the deeper you go underground, the hotter it gets. This means that there could be a lake of hot water deep underground, which would be able to generate steam. Another possibility is that the steam is coming from a geothermal plant. Geothermal plants use the heat from the Earth's core to generate steam, which can then be used to power turbines and generate electricity. It's possible that the founders of the Silo built a geothermal plant deep underground, which would provide them with a renewable source of energy. Finally, it's also possible that the steam is coming from some other source that has not yet been revealed. The Silo is a mysterious place, and there are still many things about it that we don't know. It's possible that the steam vent is just one of many secrets that the Silo holds.

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is that, to me, the surface crater rings seem too small to encompass the impression of the silo dimensions from inside, and thus some of the other rings we see are way too close! The other question I have is "where are the mines? Do they really exist?" They can't be under the silo, cos if they were, wouldn't George & Jules have come across them? I think if there is between-silo physical connections they would be Up Top, behind closed doors (easier to control) rather than way down below with no apparent control of access other than a feeble 'Do not enter' board, and some difficulty climbing.

The greatest villains are nuanced and are neither good or bad but misguided and good guys are layered as well which blurs the boundaries of good and evil. So there is truth to what Bernard says that the outside world is toxic likely from radiation after nuclear war. But Bernard and the judicial approach to prevent another repeat of history is misguided by preventing free thinking, books, arts, religion, etc by banning artifacts and relics of the past like a Georgia travel book and hard drive of history. It will likely be similar to the show Snowpiercer where people want to get off the train version of silo but don't know if it's safe or not so they start a rebellion and ultimately split into two trains and those who want to stay can stay and those who believe in new Eden can leave.

Maybe not total evil, but fascist and discouraging in not only the fascists at top, but the people accepting such a stunted life. In that only weak people in the human race would love to hide in a big bunker not confront humanity's fears and problems - but stay in thrall to some freaky "we must control everything, watch everything" power-thirsty tyrants. Accepting a dismal life the tyrants rule with. In a pit in the ground.

(telling me to just start from the beginning doesn't count) Also, how far into the first book is the tv show so far? Do you have an audible code I can use that will benefit you?

Thinking about the others silos I got to a conclusion that I think it makes a resonable sense: In the other silos there wasn't a rebellion. Therefore, their belief system and their traditions are much different. It would be awesome to see that. I hope we can see this with Jules. I'm very excited for season two.

Great video and thanks for clearing up those questions for us. Still so many remain unanswered and I can't wait for season 2. Do you think maybe that Sims and his wife want to take over cause they want to change things for those couples who were having a hard time getting pregnant, who were being lied to and tricked about the birth control? They both had issues getting pregnant with their son and the midwife lady who was drugged and threatened by Sims helped him and his wife with their son. He told her that he'll forever be grateful for the help she gave him and his wife with their son and that's the only reason he'll give her the good stuff instead of letting her rott in confinement with all her faculties in tact for the rest of her days. So maybe Sims and his wife are trying to make changes to insure that every couple will have a fair chance at starting a family without being lied to? Or maybe they are secretly flamekeepers and they'll have to play dirty for as long as it takes to get to the top so they can then take over? It could also just be that they're against institutional corruption cause they've seen way too much and they want for their son to have a better life, a better future and more choices. Everything is so controlled within the Silo and everyone needs permission for everything. It reminds me of East Germany back in the days. They kind of live like that within the Silo and I could see someone like Sims and his wife who've seen everything that goes on wanting to change that for the future of their son. Don't we all just want better lives for our children, protect them, keep them safe and we don't want them to experience any of the pain and sorrow that we've experienced in our lives? We'd move mountains for our children.

The fact Juliette hasn't died, did disprove one theory, that the oxygen tank contained a poison. But now we're left with two options, the air outside is poisonous, or the stuff that's sprayed on each cleaner as they exit, is the poison. I'm going to say it's the first one The fact there's no vegetation at all for miles to me suggests the air is toxic and even plant life won't grow in it. I think Bernard was shocked about the revelation there's a huge door under the silo, it seemed clear he didn't know about it Which explains why he's taken the platter out of the broken drive, his curiosity is now getting the better of him and I bet he's going to try and have the data restored, but to what end? I think it's clear there are still people higher up the food chain, above Bernard, who are overseeing what looks like a massive silo project, as I believe that pink key is a pager, it buzzes and flashes. There's one thing they didn't touch on again which surprised me and that was the camcorder Jules gave to....I forget her name, the lady with the anxiety, she connected it up, it turned on, but we never saw anymore. I was hoping it had video of the time before the silos and Jules would hook that up to the monitors and not the hard drive. I still don't understand why they went to all the trouble to hook the drive up to a terminal, just to display that video to the screens in the surveillance room, it all seemed rather pointless. Imagine instead if she'd hooked the camcorder up and it was that family playing on the beach we saw in the old ladies dream? The city scape in the background in the end apparently lines up with Atlanta Georgia, the skyscrapers match, so it's definitely earth. I think the magazine/tour guide book they found was based in Georgia too from memory.

I haven't read the books but I agree with everything you're saying. The air outside is toxic and I think they die because people before Jules got the trash Heat Tape from IT which was made to fail. I think the tape would fail minutes after they go out and it would create a breach inside the suit, letting the toxic air in. The steam they spray on them might not be something to worry about. Jules got sprayed too but the tape Walker gave her saved her life.

Regarding the position of the 2 bodies in relation to the tree in Pete's excellent video: @ 2:05 to 2:18 - If one thinks of the tree as the center of a clock, both bodies are well below the 8 o'clock position, actually very close to the 7 o'clock position, which is much lower than the center of the tree if it's extended to the left. In the image @ 2:52 - Both bodies are much higher up the slope and in the wide shot @ 3:04, both bodies are waaaay higher up the slope at approx. the 10 o'clock position relative to the tree. The 3 different images don't make for a good theory of what's going on. So, the explanations so far don't make sense to me other than the CGI placements are off or not thought to be important, which is no big deal, although it would have been a lot more believable if the bodies had been more obvious, seeing as how the characters were so pivotal in the beginning and the last shots were a real season-ending cliffhanger. And, where are all the other bodies of previous cleaners? Must have been some others, huh?

My working theory is that the large door in the very bottom of the silo (which connects to a tunnel as we were shown on the harddrive silo schematics) will be central to something the third book will introduce and revolve around. So probably Season 4 in the screen adaption if the two later books (Shift and Dust) only get one season each.

Nah Sims is fine. After the event with his kids. Bernard seems to understand and he tells him they will have to have a talk. Also having someone to hand over such a responsability must be rare. Like you need to be trained from young age and being fully dedicated. My bet is Bernard will spill the beans in season 2 to Sims as he reveals all the secrets for us to learn more. Knox is cool but untrustworthy from Bernard's pov. Knox did the right thing to tell on Juliette, even from Juliette's perspective. Not giving her up would have meant serious consequences for them down below

I haven't read the books so take these theories with a grain of salt: 1) The Server Room is where the head of IT goes if there is an emergency and needs to contact other Silos. 2) There MUST be some backstory here. When, why, and how were they built. Possibly next season? 3) We will see Lucas again. He's gonna be in the "mines". Mines mean digging and I see Lucas digging right into a neighboring Silo. 4) Sims vs. Bernard. Sims saw the display and we have no idea how that will affect him next season. He also saw Bernard leave just after it became apparent that something was up during Juliet's cleaning (She knows). He will most likely become "curious" and begin to question things, forcing Bernard's hand to tell him the truth.

the water in the other empty Silo is an easy answer, it comes from when they were drilling. When rock is drilled you need alot of water and what is left over at the bottom of the empty silo I would bet is just water that hasnt been used or evaporated yet. The door under it is probably closed to keep the water out. No idea if this is the answer but its what I am guessing! :) fkn love this show

i think the fact that juliette was able to make it and walk out safe will make a large impact on the people inside the silo .they might start another mutiny also i think the girl officer might tell (belings) that( juliette ) did not ask for cleaning and that would turn him against the judicial and i don't think bernard is in full control of the silo and there is alot he don't know but he takes order from another authority through the key (18) he possess .
