Silo Season 1 Ending Explained. Episode 10 breakdown. In-depth recap and review of Silo S01E10 “Outside” with the ending explained. Please subscribe! 👉 bit.ly/PetePeppers
In Silo Episode 10 Jules (Rebecca Ferguson) is finally caught and forced to go outside to clean. While she’s waiting, Walker realizes that the heat tape that IT uses is designed to fail so that the cleaners die before they get too far from the Silo. By replacing it she buys Jules more time and we see Bernard (Tim Robbins) rush to the server room in a panic. When she makes it to the top of the hill she sees that the world is desolate but that there are several other Silo sites nearby.
The first season ends on a cliffhanger about what Juliette will do next, but Apple TV+ has renewed Silo for a second season that is filming right now. The season one finale delivered a lot of answers with several enduring mysteries for fans to ponder until the next season arrives. It’s not clear how the Silo residents will react to Jules’ refusal to clean, or what this means for Bernard and the future of the Silo.
The Silo is an underground world where the last 10,000 people on Earth live to stay safe from the toxic environment on the surface. The inhabitants aren’t aware of how it got there or why things are the way they are because a rebellion 140 destroyed their histories. Things take a turn when the Sheriff's wife starts asking questions and eventually asks to go outside. This is the cardinal rule of the Silo. Any spoken request to leave the Silo is granted, but it’s irrevocable, once uttered it’s determinative, in other words, it’s a death sentence.

Silo is the story of the last ten thousand people on earth, their mile-deep home protecting them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built and any who try to find out face fatal consequences. Rebecca Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer, who seeks answers about a loved one's murder and tumbles onto a mystery that goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined, leading her to discover that if the lies don't kill you, the truth will.

A great ending for the first season and lots to think about until the next one gets here. Let me know what your big questions are so I can include them in my Season 2 Questions video. I'm curious about Sims and his wife, Paul Billings, and what Bernard's next moves will be. Did you catch Hugh Howey's cameo in the finale? twitter.com/PetePeppers/status/1674593181319708672?s=20

They trick people into cleaning so they can get rid of more like minded people it's actually pretty brilliant if you think about it. Anybody who asks to go outside might be suspicious of what they are being told and would most likely talk to somebody about it and the easiest way to get a signal across is to clean..

How did Walker know that poor tape quality is the reason all the other people died? She must have known exactly what’s happening if she left her apartment for the first time in decades just to ask Supply to give Juliet the good tape. Yet she presumably shouldn’t really know anything about the suits since she hasn’t witnessed a silo exit or looked at the giant display in 25 years. For all Walker knows, the suits could be full of poisoned air so Juliet needs more openings in the suit to survive? It just seems a little odd that Walker knows exactly what’s going on and how to fix it. It also seems illogical that Bernard would let Juliet go through the usual exit ritual with spectators. He knows she saw the hard drive and doesn’t believe the display in the helmets is real, so she’s unlikely to fall for it and clean. It seems unlikely he would risk it with all those people gathered to watch her. Seems it would be easier to push her over the railing like they do with so many others.

I have not read books but I guessed multiple silos in 1 st ep only. Its the most common trope in dystopian sci fi. Survivors in dystopian worlds r scattered at multiple locations in almost all dystopian movies / shows I have seen. Walking dead , resident evil etc r just some examples off the top of my head.

When he realized she knew the screen in her helmet was false, he only started running to that room after she kept walking on. He didn’t think she would keep walking on not knowing that the tape was switched. Once he realized she had the capacity to keep walking he ran to that room which is probably an area where the ones in the know can communicate with other silos, hence the device/key with the number. If she kept walking and appeared in another silos camera viewpoint, it can cause a domino effect of repercussions in other silos as well. He probably needed to tell those in other silos what is happening for them to shut their cameras off and keep the lie alive.

My detailed thoughts on the Finale - From a Political/Psychological standpoint. My take: The whole reason for the "illusion - lush green" is to inspire hope to the "cleaner" so that they clean the sensor to show everyone that it is safe to go outside. The sensor does not pick up sound from the outside because that was the intention of the Founders. The "cleaner" is not provided with a pen and paper to note their thoughts and the masque is foggy by design so as to not read lips. Therefore "the cleaner" has only one option, to clean the sensor so as to show it in the best available way the outside. By doing this, it refreshed the clarity of the image of the sensor so as to evidentiate to the people of the silo that the outside is still dead. Every "cleaner'' cycle is basically a psychological routine process to discharge the hope (of the people) that was accumulated in the silo ( reset ) of the wonder of the outside, that maybe it is safer to go out. In doing this you crush the hope build-up, and keep the Silo safe of inside civil war ( the only way for the system to stay alive is to quell any systematic hope of the natural way a human is built - to hope for a better future ) - The Founders probably knew that whatever happened to the outside, would take hundreds maybe thousands of years until it becomes habitable again, but humanity's patience is a lot shorter, and they had to find ways to keep it in check to evade disaster. Furthermore, the "cleaner" had to die before crossing the hill, because if it gets out of view, people might believe that they made it, and will always wonder if he is still alive ( Hope building up ). What is my take on the immediate happenings after this season finale: Julliete realizes that she is short on air supply, and her only option is the following : To enter a different Silo. She will show up in view of a different Silo sensor, and the people in the Cafeteria (of that Silo ) will go nuts about it. And demand their mayor to let her in, because understandably that means that there are people outside de Silo - ALIVE! That mayor (assuming that he knows the truth ) is in a lose/lose scenario. If the mayor does not let her in, the seeds of discontent will prompt a revolution. If the mayor lets her in, Julliete will become a messiah.

If you start setting up a system for poisoning, you have to let people into the loop which is highly risky. I see what you are saying about the spray though. It would make more sense to either just fire the chamber and/or spraying afterwards so nothing gets in.

Since Juliette will survive longer outside I assume she is going to make it to the next crater in which they’ll rush to let her in since they’ve never seen anyone ever show up on their camera. Season 2 will take place in another silo and at some point she’ll end up back at the first silo by traveling through the mystery door that leads to mystery tunnels between silos at the bottom of each silo. Wait until she comes face to face with everyone she knows in the season 2 finale.

I don't think she'll return so soon. She is more likely to wreak havoc and confusion than be welcomed into another silo. She'd inspire inquisitiveness and critical thinking. She'd spark rebellion. My understanding is that the final book in the trilogy is titled Silo. The second book is titled Wool. That suggests she'll be outside for a while.

Also, in the book there’s a parallel story that shows how dangerous is out there, which underlines the writers of the pact’s urgency in having no one questioning how safe is inside and how dangerous is outside.

At the end, seeing that the planet was in fact a desolated wasteland and there are other Silos was the best possible ending. The question I want answered is why the Silo prohibits elevators and the creation of magnification lenses. My other observation is that Bernard was in an incredibly difficult situation. He clearly knows everything and has an enormous responsibility. A far greater responsibility than we are led to believe. He clearly places the survival of the silo paramount, more important than everything. He believes that the only way to maintain order and sustainability is to create a world that allows people to have a certain amount of freedom, feel productive, and not feel the need to question their reality. It is a heavy burden to have to make the decisions. He is a product of human nature. I just thought of something that would have made the last scene even more incredible. Imagine the camera panning and showing all the other SIlos the same way it did, except there are dead bodies outside all of them. That would have been even more intense.

But what a great finale, really enjoyable. For a brief moment I actually thought the outside world was lush/green, but I'm glad it wasn't, as soon as I saw the V shaped bird formation again, it was obvious it was a VR recording. Another thing, is the 18 key is for unlocking the server room door, why was it buzzing/blinking in the previous episode? is it a pager and a key? If it is a pager, then that means they do have wireless tech, so that explains how the image is projected into the helmets and stops when they cross the hill/threshhold.

When she got outside and she saw the same V formation of the birds I knew that was she was seeing through the helmet was a false projection. I was very surprised by that. Cause when the silo was shutting down for repairs, for a glimpse of a second everyone could see at the cafeteria that outside was green. That scene meant for me that due to powering down the system of false projecrion failed for a second. But that was not the case. I don't know how they will explain that in the futute. If they ever will. Perhaps when the power was cut, the outside camera could show for a second what is projected to the hemets of all those that go out to clean. I can't wait for season 2. P.S. History is replete with examples of burning books, banning religion arts history music like in Germany WWII Russia China who went thru the great cultural revolution under the misguided notion that these ahem artifacts of knowledge inspire creativity and ultimately rebellion against gov't. So the author is borrowing from history to craft his bunker story and fast forward 260 years and the radiation from WWIII has died down but the land just above the silo is barren but there are lush fields and green further out by the river if they are bold enough to venture out. But they've been trapped down for so long they're afraid to go out. The bunkers each can only hold so many people so they need multiple bunkers. So far this story plods predictably and done before by movies like Matrix, Equilibrium, Brazil, 1984 etc but this is a nice bunker theme. I appreciate that Bernard-of-the-show has had his evil edges blunted a bit. He's done terrible things, but the show really did a good job of hinting that he's under a certain strain too, and at least to his mind, he's doing his level best to keep everyone alive. The last moments we see Bernard really give one pause to think he's not necessarily wrong in his thinking. Book-Bernard was a little more power for power sake and 1 dimensional evil, IMO. Anyway, of course that's the perfect place to end the season, and I will be so excited to see how they start next season, what with two or three good options to choose from. :D

But what is the point of the whole system? I mean whatever happened before ppl still prefer to stay alive, and it looks like the basic equation is true: they r closed off from a toxic world with scarce resources so they have to operate in a very strict way. It isn't like in Snowpiercer, there is no obvious exploitation. Does the book explain this?

Because the tape does not work, it goes into the suit and slowly kills whoever inhaled it. Even if you take off your helmet afterwards, you have already breathed it in.

From the looks of outside it looks to be a nuclear war. That’s the only way end up with that kind of barren environment. Which would make sense to build the silos as an underground self sustaining bunker until it’s safe to come out. What they see on the screen is real so they would be breathing in radioactive air if they go outside. My guess is the helmet display is wirelessly controlled by each silos server room and the hill is the limit for wireless from each silo to work. Once she crosses the hill the wireless connection disconnected and she saw the truth. The heat tape kept her safe from the radiated air and there is actually real oxygen in the tanks.

I originally suspected that the suit was actively poisoning them but apparently that's not the case as the switched tape saved her so the outside might be poisonous. Don't know where this leaves us for next season. If it was a wasteland but NOT poisonous there'd be a little hope for her but unless the switched tape is irrelevant I don't see how the star of the show gets out of this one! Goes INTO another silo maybe??? The leaky tape being the reason why all others succumbed "right on schedule" is a bit of a flimsy plot device. 1) "they" have full control over the entire suit so they could make the backpack feed in poison at a very specific time/distance or just put vents somewhere. It's not like the wearer can do an integrity check before leaving!. 2) Different bodies (mass, fitness) would react at different rates so there would be no fine control from the trace amounts getting through leaky tape I thought that the mayor rushed off to turn off her "green" image as it seemed to vanish the moment he entered the room but I couldn't see what did that achieve for the people remaining? Who cares what SHE sees?,... the viewscreens still show a wasteland, just one in which the cleaner didn't drop dead. Thought it better for him to turn off the internal viewers instead. I guess if he didn't turn her screen off, the remaining question is what exactly did/could he do once he knew that SHE knew her helmet image was false? And why would that get him in such a tizzy? The leaky tape is still supposed to take care of her and she was still apparently beginning to falter when he ran off to the server room. Ugh, so many questions, and at the current glacial rate of modern TV production (6-10 eps per 18-24 months!), sooooo long to wait! (so annoying,.. in the 80's/90's/00's series like TNG/DS9/Voyager/SG1/SGA/B5 knocked out 20+ episodes a year, most very good episodes. Something has gone very wrong with the industry.) Oh, obviously a non book reader here so maybe this is all clear to those in the know!

You could estimate how long it would take. I think the decontamination room is where they poison the cleaners. That smoke that gets pumped in I don’t think is oxygen. They could total tweak the concentration level’s through those vents and tailor it towards the size of each person. They don’t all collapse in the exact same spot either which kind of proves they are estimating

Once it was clear she was going over the hill, Bernard had to run to check in with his bosses. What if she survives long enough to make it to another silo?? He didn’t turn her screen off - it was designed to show augmented reality only in the bowl where the cleaners stayed. Once she cleared the hill the system was unable to continue to create a false reality.

As a non Booker reader I imagine all the silos are connected by their servers. As soon as a “master” OG hard drive was plugged in it alerted the other silos oh #18 is in fact still active/alive. Perhaps Bernard and previous leaders became xenophobic/isolationist after their rebellion that lead to the pact and authoritarian regime. The keychain started blinking bc they got pinged by the other silos with messages. He ran to the room to see the messages-perhaps there are multiple #18 style silos and he’s going to warn them about Jules potentially appearing on their displays.
