Silly Symphonies: Springtime (October 24, 1929)

This short was released October 24 1929, the same day the stock market crashed; leading to the Great Depression.

"Hey Jasper, Did you?"
I can't watch this without thinking of the scene in 101 Dalmatians when Sgt. Tibbs rescue the pups. XD

I distinctly remember sections of this short being used in 101 Dalmatians as the first show Jasper and Horace watched on the TV. Ironically enough, while the soundtrack for Springtime plays unaltered and uncut in the movie, what is shown on the TV screen doesn't match up one-to-one with the short in its original form. The soundtrack is played actually about 8 seconds ahead of the visuals in 101 Dalmatians.

@@emiliopolanco8587 Perfect timing that you posted a link to that scene, as it just so happens to have been 25 years since the live action remake was released. That of course, was many years before they started making a habit out of it...because they apparently didn’t discover a gold mine until Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland came along.

Sgt. Tibbs: "I'd better count em'" Puppy: "Watch out for the Baduns" Sgt. Tibbs: "Baduns?" Puppy: "Those two blokes, Horace and Jasper. They're mean ones they are." Every time i watch this short the above scene from 101 Dalmatians comes to mind, as it seems quite a few more here know it from that as well instead of just by itself as a stand alone thing.

(Horace helps himself to a pair of sandwiches, and Jasper guzzles down on some wine. As Tibbs climbs on a box behind the couch to count the fifteen puppies, Lucky ducks his head down as the center flower dances up close to the screen.) Jasper: "’Ey, look, Horace! Watch me pot ‘Is Lordship smack on the conk!" (He throws a dart that lands on a portrait painting of Lord de Vil.) "Ha-ha-ha-ha! How’s that for callin’ ‘em, eh? Ha-ha-ha-ha!" (As Horace sits on the floor to eat his sandwiches, Jasper swats him in the belly, and Horace irritatedly looks at him.) Sergeant Tibbs: (counting) "1… 2… 3, 4, 5, 6…" Horace: "Hey, Jasper!" (Tibbs ducks down, while Horace impolitely eats with his mouth full of food.) "Come on now. Give us a swig, just a short one." Jasper: "Now, Horace, this here hogwash ain’t fit for a fancy bloke like yourself. Besides, you’d get crumbs in it, you cabbage head!" (He sets the wine bottle down next to Tibbs.) Horace: "All right. Guzzle the whole works, and I hope it gives you collywobbles, that’s what." (Rolly steals a slice of Horace’s ham from the sandwich for himself and squeezes under the couch. Horace take his first bite and notices his toppings are gone!) "Hey, Jasper, did you…" (Jasper rudely ignores his brother and dumps a bunch of cigar ashes on the bread slices.) Sergeant Tibbs: (counting) "Let me see… 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11…" Horace: "Hey! Get down, you little runt, and stay down!" (He pushes Lucky down from the TV set, as Patch barks at Horace for messing with his brother.) "Go on! Get out of here, or I’ll… I’ll black your other peeper!" Sergeant Tibbs: "Where was I? 9… 9… three more. 12 and… 1, 2, 3. That’s 15! They’re the ones!"

Tibbs escapes through the hole as it breaks)
This Silly Symphony cartoon was featured in Walt Disney's 101 Dalmatians (1961).
I couldn't remember how old I was when Watching 101 Dalmatians before watching this, but when I was a Toddler, I watched 101 Dalmatians when I see the puppies watching this silly symphony short, never realize that it was real, I only thought it was fake (like Thunderbolt and What's my crime), but months later, I watched it airing on "Disney channel" I couldn't believe it! I was surprised to see the real cartoon from 101 Dalmatians aired on my TV!
Dance of the Hours music played in a Disney movie eleven years before _Fantasia_ (1940).
This is the same cartoon that Jasper and Horace are watching in the original 101 Dalmatians. This early one is quite similar to Flowers and Trees. The music carries the story along without any dialogue.
Notice how the little insects in these cartoons don't come back, alive and unhurt, after being eaten.

This short film uses many sections and movements from the classic Opera "Dance of the Hours", many of which Walt would then use again for the Ostrich, Elephant, Hippo and Crocodile dance segment from Fantasia.
I have just finished watching the animated version of 101 Dalmatians, and this was the exact cartoon Jasper and Horace's TV was playing! I noticed that at the shot at 0:44 of this video, Lucky was frightened by the TV, because he was too close to the screen! Also, I noticed that this cartoon plays "Dance of the Hours," from Fantasia!

OMG, the 101 puppies and their evil kidnappers were watching together this cartoon!
The crash at the end to me symbolizes the stock market crash since it aired the day it happened
This Silly Symphony was released 5 days before the stock market crash that occurred on October 29th, 1929, which then plunged the country into the Great Depression.
101 Dalmatians brought me here. I find it ironic how Disney featured one of his old cartoon shorts into one of his feature length cartoons

3rd Silly Symphony has a LOT (way too much) of klop klop klopping, and looked to be the model for Merry Dwarfs (SS 05), but this is a much better cartoon, having some good graphic points of interest, the rather grisly devourings, and an early, perhaps first, appearance of what would become Flip the Frog, who perhaps should be called Flip the (quacking) Frog. The black, frog swallowing, egret in the end looked really nice.
