SILICONE ANTIFOULING: How did it hold after 2 years? (Watch before applying!)

Ойын-сауық

In January 2020, we replaced our traditionnal biocide antifouling with a silicone based antifouling from Hempel (not sponsored, we payed for it).
We had to scrape our entire hull bare and replace the primer, add a tie coat and apply two layers of the silic-one.
So how do it do? Find out in this video!

We tried the same paint this year and it’s been amazing! We’re in a high fouling area and we just get a tiny bit of fine green weed around the waterline, which easily wipes off. The boats around us have the toxic stuff and they’re always fouled up. We won’t be going back to the toxic stuff! It’s better for the sea and makes us faster too.

Hi there. I like the look of that very much. For your propeller, have a think about painting it with aerosol Cold Zinc, but do not get the Marine one like Pettit's, which is identical to ordinary Cold Zinc Gal arising Spray, about 8 times more expensive due that dreaded Word "Marine" and you can get it in Handlers. Here in UK, I've seen it for around 8 pounds a large tin. Patently putting 3 coats on, and it should work as antifouling for about 18 months, depending on the water the boat is in. Major Bonus Point, it also works as an additional Saxrificial Anode ! I think the material is actually a blend of Aluminium and Zinc. Plus when you haul out, just wash and rub down, then when dry, spray more coats on . I've checked it out on several boating forums, and a fair number of people say it is that good, they won't consider using anything else, withnsome using it for over 10 years. Extra Anode Protection ? Heck I'll haul out annually to check Anodes and annual Service and check over anyway. Plus you won't have to buy extra to do the prop . tbh, I'll paintbthe bronze though hulls and bow Thruster with it anyway. Best Wishes, and thanks for the look see at that stuff. impressive. Best Wishes. Bob. 👍🙂

I gave my boat the full treatment of SilicOne at the start of last season (2024) . Sand blast, Hempel epoxy primer, tie coat and top coat all exactly as the spec says with times and temperatures all correct. At the end of the season I can say that it has worked almost perfectly. There were 3 small (hand size) parches where the top coat and tie coat had peeled. I am worried that the instructions give no indication of abrading the epoxy before the tie coat. I contacted the agents before application and they said it was "wet on wet" application. I gave special attention to the time and temperature between coats and complied with that. (no sanding) I am worried that they may have omitted the instruction to sand the epoxy before the tie coat in the instruction leaflet. Incidentally I gave the propeller the same treatment and it has adhered perfectly! Did you sand your primer epoxy?

Hi Ryan. I just watched your original Silic One video, and you put it on with original antifouling under it, with three top coats. Are you saying it is better to put it onto the surface of the Hull (better for me, as .I'll be getting a new boat God willing), or the Agent doing the Commissioning does their usual Hard Antifouling, which would probably be a good base otherwise, as yours Silic one application appears to be doing well. 👍 In Addition, I've found out more about the Cold Zinc Calvanising materials available, and one type in particular (various Brands) appears very promising. At 96% Zinc, you can get it for around 24 pounds for a 1 kilo Tin, it is mixed with a silicon binder, and doesn't need mixing in the Tin ! appliable with Brush or roller, each coat is over 1mm thick. Zinc too is a non Toxic Material ! tbh, I'm very tempted to try it as an antifoul with say 4 coats , which will also be a giant anode for the Boat. Maybe the fixed Zincs would never wear out ? Each haulout, just wash, dry, light fine grade scrub, and slap on more Coats ? 10 tins I reckon will do a 44 ft boat easy, with lots of tins left over. Think it's worth the experiment as the first antifouling on a new hull, plus twin rudders, to see what happens ? Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 🤔🙂👍

I do recommend Jotun Megayacht , Hempel Globic etc. These are 90 months shipantifoulings, they last as expected, no whatsoever marine growth. Cost maybe a little higher. May be painted in cold weathers...simple to apply. In all, these paints are toxic but a far more simple solution in the end. More sustainable than fancy 2yr ecopaints. Think about it, no haul out for 5-7years and a clean bottom. Anodes may be replaced under water, bottom inspected easily... I never go back to the leisure market hokuspokus paints 😅

.I think there's a bit of a clue in the name Silic 1 One ? Apparently you can make home made, with half a tube of Silicone, mixed with an equal volume of Acetone and thoroughly mixed together. Hi there, I found a firm called "Finsulate" on the internet. they have an antifoulingwrap, on wich they give five years garantie. The founder of this firm had mainly the invironment in mind when he looked for an alternatif for chemical antifouling. Maybe something for you to explore

Prior to applying your primer and silicon, you and Sophie spent days sanding the hull. In the photo shown of the peeling silicon, it doesn't appear as though your friends pre-sanded their hull. Do you know if they did so? By not means am I certain that this is the case, but I am curious. Many thanks for another wonderful video!

Yes, they did…. But they waited too long between coats, which resulted in the peeling :/

After binge watching your channel we came across this episode.. very interested in doing this on our Catamaran. This may have been asked previously, apologies if so, is this product hard to obtain in the US?

We have been in touch with Hempel on the very same subject, because we will need to get our hands on the paint as we reapply a coat in the spring. We think they will (it would be a shame for them not to accelerate distribution in the US, as a lot of people are interested in the product!)

I love that stuff, but getting it applied correctly, can be a bit of a nightmare gamble. On my last boat, I had Pettit Trinidad Pro Hard put on, to a hull already 2 coat epoxy Barrier coated, so 2 more epoxy Trinidad primers, then 2 top coats. It's just high Copper Content. When I looked intomit, should have had at least 3 to 4 years no growth , then just a deslime for the next 3 to 4 years, which was supposed to give the time to fi d a reliable Copper Coat applying yard. Next boat , I want out of the Water for a full service and checkover annually anyway, so the stuff Ryan has used seems to fit in well, for Hull inspection and touching up. For Prop through hulls, and bow thruster, I'll be using 3 coats of Cheap Cold Galvanising Zinc Spray, which looks to be good for up to 18 months, plus gives extra Galvanic Anode Protection. then when hauled out, clean and prep, then Spray and brush some more coats on. It was highly recommended on several forums, so worth a try. Just don't buy chronicallynoverpriced Marine Sprays, they are identical to the cheap ones apparently. It'll be a while before I can give feedback on actual use, but galvanic erosion of the paint surface should keep the prop clean? Makes sense to me anyway. All the best. Bob. 👍🤔

So… what if it DOESN’T work that great? I want to try it, but what do they say about getting it off and using any other coating ever again? Are you stuck with it forever?

  • @RyanSophieSailing

It’s just like with traditional anti-fouling. If you want to try something else (copper coat for example), you have to scrape it all off and start over. We did it when we switched over to silicone based, which is not super fun, but also not a giant hassle.

The Great Lakes are fresh water as well as colder than the oceans you have been to. There is less growth in this case so it is not a good reference for comparison. However it will be a good endurance test. Are you passing by the Hudson River or the St-Lawrence? Cheers
