Dating to 1953, this charming Coronet Instructional Film tells the story behind the creation of "Silent Night", one of the most beloved Christmas songs of all times. It also shows the traditional Christmas activities in Austria, including caroling and mass, and relates how "Silent Night" ended up spreading worldwide.
As the film relates, the melody of "Silent Night" (or in German: "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht") was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. "Stille Nacht" was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818 at St Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in the Austrian Empire on the Salzach river in present-day Austria. A young priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had come to Oberndorf in 1917. In the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, he had written the poem "Stille Nacht" in 1816 at Mariapfarr, the hometown of his father in the Salzburg Lungau region, where Joseph had worked as an assistant priest. Franz Xaver Gruber, who wrote the melody, was a schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf, now part of Lamprechtshausen. On Christmas Eve 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.
Silent Night was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. The song has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935 is the fourth best-selling single of all-time.

As a devout parochial student I knew this history and had to sing it in German, French and English. It is a miraculous song with a humble history.

This, and “The Littlest Angel” are the two Christmas shorts from Coronet Educational Films back in the 1950’s. I hope you should look for “Christmas Cartoon” from 1941 by Castle Films. I have the 8mm version of “Christmas Cartoon”, but I want the sound version.
