Fun Fact: Shōhō was the first *Japanese* aircraft carrier lost during the war. She was sunk by combined air attack from USS Lexington and USS Yorktown during the Battle of the Coral Sea, 7 May, 1942. She did not go down easily, as post war accounting of US and IJN records state she was hit by no fewer than 13 bombs and 7 air dropped torpedoes; a testament to her crews damage control abilities. The game claims Shōhō was the class name but it was her sister ship Zuihō which was sunk by air action during the Battle of Layte Gulf in October, 1944.

"Bally" used to be a very mild British expletive back in the 1930's and 1940's - it's a polite euphemism of "bloody". So "Bally-O" really means "Bloody O" (or maybe "Bloody 'ole").

Awesome episode taff, this was one hell of an epic episode.. wiping out enemy oilers as well as a destroyer and a carrier, this was truly the best yet, just the very best. All that enemy tonnage sent to the seabed and destroying an enemy carrier.. this is going to hit the enemy right where it hurts, of enemy morale isn't going to be effected then their propaganda will suffer, well.. they'll put a cover up obviously but when the war situation reaches crisis levels.. they'll not be able to cover it up for long, with all the damage done so far I doubt the enemy's propaganda will be very convincing to those in their forces. Destroying the enemy's oilers is a perfect bonus, you really did just make the best contribution to the allied war efforts.. great work.. really.. great work. Fantastic episode, the best so far.. looking forward to the next one, get a good cold drink tonight and have one on me. Stay safe and happy gaming mate 👏👍

I can only imagine how big of an impact you, a single submarine, is having on the Japanese war effort, loads f submarines only came to a total tonnage of 100k, and you just pick up over 50 K in a single night! Great sailing captain!

In real history. Submarine captains had countless opportunities to sink shipping even in 1942 but the terrible torpedoes prevented a huge impact on the Japanese war effort which may have caused many many losses that did not need to happen. It will forever remain one of the worst scandals in US military history. Most of the huge victories against shipping were from aircraft but they could not reach deep into the home waters of the empire.

To be fair, the Mark XIV torpedo was developed in the midst of the Great Depression, where spending on new weapons were tight at best. What should the US Navy's Bureau of Ordnance should have done is to subject the Mark XIV to a thorough testing and development program as soon as additional funds were available, but as history showed, they didn't.

@@kristoffermangilaInstead, they went and blamed the submarine Captains for being "too conservative" and vehemently denying that anything was wrong. Same with the American 20mm. They had tolerances wrong, and they knew it, but they denied anything was wrong. FDR HIMSELF had to order them to fix the tolerances, and even then they dragged their feet. And the surface fleet almost never got radars and the mass of AA guns that were so essential in the early years, because BuOrd said they didn't need them. Thankfully, one Admiral Willis "Ching" Lee managed to cut his way through their labyrinth of red tape to get it done. I swear, BuOrd did more to help the enemy than the US.

I think the USN should have borrowed a Mk VIII torpedo from the Brits and started talking about a desire to license produce a version that fit their tubes. Would have put a rocket under BuOrd, even if actually making an Americanised Mk VIII wasn't realistic.

@@nerd1000ify Funnily Enough, that's kinda how Admiral Lee got Radars on their ships. Lee wanted Radars, BuOrd said they don't have enough, Lee said he'd just buy some from Britain, and suddenly, they do, in fact, have the radars needed.
