SHN Rating for Silent Hill (PS1) ★★★★
Silent Hill The Complete Collection only on SHN!
At the start of the game, Harry drives to Silent Hill with his daughter Cheryl for a vacation. At the town's edge, he swerves his car to avoid hitting a girl in the road; as a result, he crashes the vehicle and loses consciousness.
The game follows Harry Mason as he searches for his missing adopted daughter in the eponymous fictional American town of Silent Hill; stumbling upon a cult conducting a ritual to revive a deity it worships, he discovers her true origin. Five game endings are possible, depending on actions taken by the player, including one joke ending.

I love how when you're checking the map, the monsters stay in place, like they're waiting patiently. "Oh, it's cool, bro, take your time. Hey guys, guys! Chill! He's checking his map! Give him a sec."

Cheetos also, monsters can’t open doors....as long as you get through a door, leaving a dozen monsters behind it, you’re all good. The RE2 remake handles both of these issues. They will attack while changing weapons and reloading, and also they will follow you through doors and down the stairs too. A limitation of late 90’s games, but one we all enjoyed.

I’m sure he has probably played the game several times and already knows which rooms and areas need to be checked. I understand the anxiety but in his defense if he checked every single thing, things he *knows* do not actually need to be checked, this video would be like six or seven hours long. It’s already mostly just Harry running around. I felt the same way about watching SH2 on here. Phenomenal game and I loved playing it and I like watching it but if he seriously played it in the video as if he had never played it before and I had to sit through additional hours of just James running and opening doors, I would lose patience. 😆
I really appreciate you taking your time and looking at everything, for example Harry's car at the beginning or the blocked street. It really helps with the atmosphere. I hate it when people just rush and run through a game without showing all of its content.
I miss the times when horror was much more subtle.

Cancelling Silent Hills was the biggest mistake. I'd say that someone should take Silent Hill in Konami's place since they made the mistake of firing Kojima. Hell, I would've bought Silent Hills. I mean come one, we were going to play as Norman Reedus.
@evynkalinowski9231

I've seen the P.T. It looked so good. And the fact that it looked scary and the way the graphics looked. And hell, Norman Reedus looked great with motion capture. It was like they ripped Daryl Dixon out of the The Walking Dead and placed him in the realm that is Silent Hill. Something probably even worse than zombies. Shame. Nothing but pure shame. Shame on them.

+Evyn Kalinowski Don't know if it's true but some say it was part of the plan to tease like that. I've heard a theory which is probably based on a line from the man's voice on the radio (in the gameplay) that said something like "I will be coming back and I'm bringing my new toys" which is believed that is a reference for the virtual reality that's on its way. I repeat I don't know if that's true (though i hope and fear it is)

😶 you're not kidding... i think that has to be one of the all time "creepiest" in video game history... talk about using atmosphere and music to terrify someone... the feeling of "impending doom" is overwhelming...
This was a good walkthrough but unfortunately I didn't have the feeling I could just hang back and passively watch this. Because almost everytime you picked up an important item such as a key or interacted with something, you would skip the text immediately. So I had to rewind the video lots of times and pause at those exact moments to read them. That was kinda irritating but apart from that it was a good walkthrough.

skull films I disagree. To me it’s very rare that the remake captures the essence of the original game, and this is not a case of “muh nostalgia.” These classic games have a certain charm about them that modern developers just don’t seem to understand and instead focus on graphics and presentation rather than what made these games great in the first place. It’s a little bit like sports cars. When Ford stopped making mustangs for decades and then started making all new editions with sleek designs and better tech, they looked fine enough, but they will never be as iconic or have the “soul” and presence of the 1968 and 1969 mustang. Instead of rehashing everything developers should focus a lot more on creating new IP’s. Just my humble opinion.
@sentry007

@@knightsb4bishops766 You're completely correct. Especially because certain aspects of the horror, like the continual fog, were brilliant methods to get around hardware limitations that added majorly to the atmosphere. Also, the lower quality graphics make the monsters feel more alien.

Oh boy, i played this upon release. Made me shat my pants and went to play smurfs every time after i played silent hill in order to chill.
I used to love how creepy the fog, snow and eerie silence was at the beginning. Oddly enough, my favorite part of the game.
I've played this quite a few times ever since it came out, and every time is almost exactly as terrifying and uncomfortable as the 1st. But one amazing thing I am realising almost 20 years (!) later is that its lo-fi image and sound quality makes it way, way more creepier than what an HD remake would be.

I love you for actually taking the time to do this. Watching Silent Hill games (most of them in my opinion) is almost like watching a movie, seeing as how most encounters are terrifying enough to warrant being included, along with every cinematic. The only complaint I have is that when you find a book or something, you don't seem to leave enough time to read the text; you skip too quickly at some points. Thanks again, dude. Keep up the good work.

This game scared me shitless as a kid - especially the hospital section. It actually freaked me out so much that I gave it away, only playing and finishing it years later as a teenager. Would love for this to get a "true to the original" remake like they did with Resident Evil. But since Konami have long gone insane, the only remake we''ll ever see is probably going to be a pachinko machine.
This game has been one of the scariest experiences in my life.

this silent hill was probably the best because of its atmosphere and music, but the visuals were ruining the experience to me, that is why I enjoyed SH2 and SH3 more on my PS2
@lilb1190
7 жыл бұрын
I think the visuals are what separates this from the other ones. Scary games become less scary as the graphics improve, so a lot of developers rely on gimmicks and jump scares now. But back in the day it was just darkness and muddy textures that you could just make out as being disemboweled bodies. The fog in future SH games wasn't as thick, the darkness wasn't as dark, and the monsters were generally as simple as hitting them 2 times with a pipe and kicking them on the ground.
@agamaz5650

lilb1190 nice opinion, tbh i agree, but idk, as visuals improved from 1 to 2/3 it really enhanced the experience 4 me
@lilb1190
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 2 and 3 were good, but to me that was more about the story and the presentation than actually being scary or creepy. They originally added the fog and the darkness to the ps1 to hide loading, so the fog is very thick and the darkness is literally black just so you cant see what is happening. But in 2 and 3 it was added to be more of a gimmick. Even if you cant make out whats in front of you, you aren't really running around blindly. But as far as presentation, understanding what the heck is going on in the story, character development, and being drawn in to the world itself, I agree. The ps2 games were fantastic.

Bollox. Playing Silent Hill 2,3,4 was much more fun than outdated SH1. Believe me Im the last person on this planet to go with time and put graphic before gameplay. I rarely play new games as I hate em, I mostly stick to old console horrors and I tell you what, there was no better console than PS2 to scare the crap out of people if it comes to horror games. The graphic in it was just excellent, I wouldnt ask for more for the upcoming games but to be just like SH 2.3,4, Origins and its not true that with the graphic improvement we lose the creepy atmosphere and shit. Its the colours !! All new horror games come too colourish, they look more like fucking comic books than horror themselves. This is the thing that ruins every new horror nowadays before it gets released.
Hearing that radio brings shivers down my spine!

I'm basically agree, sh4: the room isn't in the hd collection though and the collection itself and the new voice acting as well are not that bad after all. ;-) Silent Hill the first is a pure masterpiece, no matter the grainy and quite blocky graphics which on the contrary make the things look dirtier hence even creepier than it would be if it had a cleaner, smoother and more detailed graphics, if you ask me. :) Although that, of course (even if it sounds as a contraddiction) I would be more than happy to have a real and above all substantial remake (I mean like the Resident Evil Rebirth on Gamecube) of SH1, but not like Shattered Memories which has been pretextual and pretty lame. :-\

Silent hill 2 is my favorite in the series. Best story, best visuals. But there is one thing about SH2 that has been HIGHLY overrated and that is it's fear factor. Silent hill 2 is NOT scary. What about the monsters? they're interesting and I appreciate their symbolism but they aren't scary. What about the environments? They're extremely well detailed, especially for 2001 but they aren't scary. No, the fear factor lies squarely with the first game for the PS1....and Silent Hill 3 which carried the same aesthetic. The otherworld in this game, creeps the ever loving shit out of me. The bloody metal grate floors, the bodies in straitjackets hanging from the walls, The intense darkness, the fact that you are completely alone in it, this game unnerved me.

Spoilers below Silent Hill 2 is the only one in the series I've played (something which I definitely need to change) but it terrified me. The radio sound effect gives me complete anxiety. The manakins are an absolute nightmare to me. The fact that there's really only one jumpscare in the game makes it the most I've ever been scared in a game. Seeing how James killed Mary really messed me up. And, on top of all of that, I'm terrified of running out of resources. Honestly I'm not sure if I can ever love a horror game so much as Silent Hill 2. I'm definitely going to play the rest of them though.

wow! I'm really impressed with the first Silent Hill game, can't wait to see what the rest have to offer!
This is your second video I've watched, and I'm enjoying it massively. They're great, very nostalgic, and I REALLY appreciate it without the commentary. I can't really enjoy games with someone wittering away in the background, making silly noises and going "Ooooh no!" every time there is something scary happening. That ruins the atmosphere, though I'm sure its fine for some, they watch for the commentator, not the game. Which is fine, those things can be hilarious... but I much prefer this. Unadulterated, straight up creepy gaming, in its uncut and natural form. I'm currently stuck in bed (disabled, going through a bad patch) and this is making my life much easier. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. - (Got my sub on, you should have more people, this is kickass.)

Thanks a lot for doing longplays for Silent Hills! I have heard a lot about how atmospheric the game can be and wanted to experience the story too but I am just too much of a scaredy cat to play it myself.

Skip Downpour. It isn't scary or even that interesting. His play through is as good as you could hope, but the game itself kind of sucks.

Finally trying to see how this game ends cos my dad's playthrough long long ago stopped pretty early in school area. Thanks for the video! I was 7 when this game was first released, so basically I am how old Cheryl will be right now lmao (and yes I'm still too scared to play survival horror games and decided to just watch playthroughs HAHA)
This game was kinda ahead of it's time with all those quality of life features like when Harry marks places of interest and doors you've been through as well as where dead ends are on the map. And even where you're supposed to go next. Most games back then gave you little to no instruction and just left you to figure things out on your own. And yeah there are some things here you have to discover on your own but it's still cool how many things we take for granted in games were pioneered here.
Never played Silent Hill, but an RE fan though. I have to say, that this game looks pretty damn good for the time. RE had static backgrounds. Sure, there is a lot of polish and detail lacking here, but I’m surprised by how smooth and open it appears. This was really ground breaking for the time on the PS1. One complaint, the lack of music a lot of the time bothers me a little. Also, I get that everyone is gone....but damn, almost an hour in and he’s talked to one person? Those little zombie kids are freaky!!! Always wished RE had included zombie children....they are terrifying for some reason. Thanks for the play-through. Gonna have to pick this up and play one day. Konami did an excellent job here with what they had to work with. So MUCH was borrowed from Capcom, but thats cool....all great games borrow. Love these old games. Have no idea why I missed this. I guess was too busy with RE1-3, FFVII-IX, and college.
I came across the silent hills series by discovering the game music first and figured the games had to be just as great
For me, those stupid zombie kids were the absolute terror of my childhood. Especially that little wheezy laughing thing that they do. They still freak me out to this day which is why I can't play this game. XD Thank you for this! :)

+PrincessQPatsy They're not zombies. This game series never ever had zombies in it. But yeah, they're awesome and creepy
The game that put horror survival games on the map.

It wasn't false information but an honest mistake. Anyway, I deleted it to keep this channel clean.

..I am sorry, but it was Alone In the Dark (1992) and Doom (1993) that put Survival Horror on the map.
I remember playing this on ps1 when I was 10. The music themes are dark and sinister I really appreciate it. The same with resident evil 1..brings back memories that’s for sure.
Thanks you so much for going through the trouble of uploading this. we are very grateful! since there's no commentary, there isn't a way to know this, so say, did u get scared a lot while playing?
I just finished watching the Game Grumps playthrough of Shattered Memories. I fell in love, and now I need to watch all the playthroughs (I can't afford consoles or video games).
simply amazing what they could fit into the playstation 1 engine!
Such a great game, this game was scary as **** when I was younger, will have to give it a go again
I watch this everynight as it puts me to sleep i love this game ❤
I would have liked to have time to read the texts on this kind of games. I know you take more time now to show them to us now and I thank you for that. merry Christmas everyone
monster are kind of funny but the backgroundmusic is the true horror in this first SH. ^^ no matter how often i watch this or how old it is, i can never get used to it. ^^ one of the best games ever.
cool playtrough o.O what are you filming that with?
I've been playing video games since 1980, Space invaders, Crazy Kong, Phoenix, Roc'n'rope, etc., but this is one of three greatest games I ever played! The other two are Benefactor on Amiga, and Gran Turismo 4 on Sony. Most scariest game of all times, that's for sure!
omg that fucking alarm bell, that shit just would not let up! I'd have to play this with no sound.
this game still scares me to this day....the source of all my nightmares XD
