    When the officer died, I was literally sad and horrified. She was such an amazing officer for buying Rose time and then trying to help her. She didn't deserved that brutality.

    My first understanding of the ending was also that Alessa wanted a mother, to be only hers. Theorizing a bit more, I came to believe they are all dead, pretty much from the beginning. In this movie, Silent Hill is a place for the damned, the dead and doomed. The cult fanatics died in the fire they started to burn Alessa, as Rose said, and are there "surviving" while waiting for Alessa's revenge. Rose crashed the car and passed out. Cybil also crashed, her bike thrown on the ground and her head was bleeding. I know this would maybe go against the games' lore, but I think it was an adaptation made to be more "horror movie" friendly, just like they replaced the game's cult with witch hunters, that we are more used to seeing. Creating the possibility that they are dead is easier to explain than the complexity of the games' lore (which the second movie tried to do and we know it didn't go great). I love the adaptation, it's really one of my favorite movies. Watched it when I was 10 and got terrified, only to then discover the games and become a fan of the franchise.

    Fun fact about the movie: Christoph Ganz, the director, was forced to add the scenes with Sean Bean that are interspersed throughout the main story. According to him, he showed his final cut to the producers and they rejected it, saying "There's no men! There has to be men in it!" so he was forced to shoot and add the extra scenes with Sean. Once the obligatory amount of "brown-haired white guy with stubble" was present, the producers approved it for release. Seriously though, if you watch the film again and skip all of the bits in "real-world" Silent Hill with Sean, you get a much better idea of what Ganz was attempting to achieve. And at least Sean Bean finally got to act in something where he doesn't die at the end! Personally, this is one of my favorite horror adaptations. You can tell that Ganz had played and loved the games, but even if you know nothing about the franchise, it's a compelling and atmospheric tale all on its own.

    slonmish Fatherly love is no weaker or less poetic than motherly love. I was glad that Christoph Ganz recognized that the Silent Hill story (an average parent going through Hell for the sake of their child) was traditionally a mother's story, but that made it all the more disappointing when the genders were swapped. Harry Mason's quest in the original game is a beautiful illustration of how a father's love and devotion is just as strong as a mother's, especially in cultures that devalue fatherly love by saying motherly love is "understandably stronger and, frankly, more poetic" when there is no evidence for that in reality.

  • @slonmish

    @slonmish

    5 жыл бұрын

    Motherly love and fatherly love are very different, and motherly love is clearly stronger. Male humans don't give birth, and this tiny thing creates a bond, which is as chemical, as it is psychological. I don't agree with you, and life actually proves my point. The whole world is based on the fact that women raise their children, plus there are very few cases of mothers abandoning their child, while fathers abandoning their children are pretty much a routine. Of course, fatherly love is not non-existent, but one should give credit where credit's due.

I wrote about the topic of purgatory and even tied in Dante's Inferno and actually freaked out my professor with how detailed I wrote everything. He asked me if I was ok mentally because I understood the underlying message way too well. I explained I'm a huge horror movie fan because that's how I bonded with my grandfather. I still say its among the most underrated of movies. I mean seriously, what I LOVE about the movie is parallel to the games, where its not entirely a happy ending but they all trade for what's important, civil with her life to save Rose in order to save Sharen, Rose sacrificing her body for Sharen and Alessa trading with Rose safe passage to enact her judgement AND I love the fact she never attacks her mother, knowing very well after all these years, no matter her mistakes, she was her mother and knew she loved her. It was all amazing for me and was a brilliant act of displaying empowerment, what parents do for their children and the ripple effects of generations (sins of the father as it were).

    I always was under the impression that she's supposed to be the Devil, helping Alyssa - Fueled by negative emotions: Vengefulness, hate, anger, disgust etc. I, for one, think it's pretty evident that Dark Alyssa is the Devil: I mean: "That's when I came...." literally tells how she approached Alyssa and promised her revenge. A pretty believable act of the Devil. She also uses dark, twisted magic, loves bloodshed and misery. Come on. The other world is also know as "hell". Also, "I have many names" is literally a reference to the Devil, since he goes under many, many names: Lucifer, Diablo, The Devil, The anti-christ, the fallen one, prime evil, unholiness, Satan, Beelzebub, Mephistopheles, etc etc. Only problem I have with any other explaination is also this: How do you explain Silent Hill and the supernatural elements, if she is not the Devil? I mean, I don't know about where you guys are from, but where I come from, ghost towns, that move you to other dimensions, isn't exactly an every day occurance. Alyssa literally being the Devil explains everything: Putting Silent Hill, in it's entirety, into another dimension: Hell. A form of eternal torment for its inhabitents, as payment for their sins (Witch burnings etc). It explains all the creepy monsters, the dark magic, the transformation of Silent Hill, everything. Saying something like "She's just a manifestation of Hate" - What does that even mean? If you get really pissed you, you can create places like silent hill, too? If so, remind me not to piss you off, lol. Obviously I don't believe in the Devil myself, but that's beside the point. The point is that this explains everything within the context of the story and the universe. Further more, it gives depth to the character of the Devil in this universe. She isn't just "evil" - She is actually a bringer of justice - A fighter for the unjust. And I kind of like that. Granted, it's in a very twisted, dark and cruel way, but still - It makes the character of the sterotypical Devil a lot more interesting.

    @@thanasgoga7127 Thats explained in number 2. A side cult of the church, which was really responsible for Alissa's torment by telling the churvh about her gifts, was still there, in a lower part of limbo (both literally and metaphorically) and needed punishment. But because of their access to dark pagen magics, Alissa was scared they would use her lighter side to tear the nightmare down. Seperating herself from her lighter side again, was the only way for her and the ones she was trying to punish, to stay in her nightmare. Thats why the cult tried so hard to bring sam back to silent hill. To reunite the two, and using their cults lore, bring down the nightmare while keeping their nightmarish powers. Also, alissa was rightfully scared that sams willpower was stronger than hers, so she was unwilling to properly merge without breaking her first.

    I feel that this movie captured the atmosphere very well. Getting Akira Yamaoka to do the music was the right choice and to be honest I respect that this film was made by an actual fan of the series. People seem to wonder why they switched the sex of the protagonist. But to be honest, I feel that delving through hell and back to save your own child is a fairly universal feeling . But Sean Bean's character really drags the movie down. Why is he there? Because the studio said there were too many women in the movie and that there needed to be men. That is the reason they crow-barred in the shitty side plot with his character that ruins the atmosphere of isolation in a place that seems to actively hate and judge you. Of course it's not great. It really isn't. But it had a love for the source material that was certainly absent from the Ass Creed movie and really any other movie like Tomb Raider. Those games require to much interaction from players who have full control of discovering a world at their leisure. A narrow focus in the narrative isn't suited to those adaptations. Silent Hill is much better suited because it CAN have a more narrow focus on the narrative. That being said...The body horror was a bit much...Not a fan of torture porn or body horror in general.

    he's there because the studio complained that there wasn't any male characters which makes you laugh when you think back to harry mason in the game but apparently a father's love for his child isn't good enough

    @@theresaruskin876 i thi k the reason they changed the protags gender is due to a narrative manipulation. Generally speaking in these types of stories Hollywood will use a mother instead of a father to manipulate the emotions of the audience into fearing for her safety more or to make the victimization more jarring and harrowing (which is a nasty stereotype of men and women, of course, but that's hollywood for you). Also, i think it was to play more to the Motherhood aspect. A foil to the antagonist. One matriarch of the cult who acts as a guiding maternal figure only for her flock who would sacrifice a child in a heartbeat vs a mother desperate to save her child at the cost of her own life.

    Just to add some context here. Way back when, when DVD rentals were still going mildly strong, I rented both Silent Hill movies. The director in this film actually goes on record as stating that he purposely changed the gender of the main character because he wanted the film to be about 'strong women', from Cybil to the priestess to the mother. Now, before we assume higher principles in that regard, the way he conveyed it in the DVD commentary and extra scenes seemed to make it a bit more, or at least partly, fetishistic, to see strong women in complicated situations. Whether you respect the decision or not is up to you, but I've always had a more cynical look at how he portrays the women in the movie based on that. As to the side-plot, oh yes, shoehorning it in was a bad move, albeit in a different way, from my perspective. For my part, I feel that they should have stuck with the focus on Harry Mason like in the first game, and given Sean Bean a better chance to shine-- he was sorely wasted in this film, criminally in fact. In turn, I don't think it would have been a bad thing if the director had cleaved to the original story's plot a bit more, if only because this whole narrative about the evil church goes way off in the weeds and is way off the mark from what Silent Hill has traditionally been about. There was plenty of substance to take from the first game's plot surrounding the cult, its effort to summon ancient, demonic gods through monstrous rituals, and the horror this wrought upon Alessa, as well as the drug-running, without going into obtuse quasi-Christian insanity. I really don't think this film had enough love for the source material to qualify as a good adaptation-- it only counts as a good one by virtue of so many others being terrible. The atmosphere isn't bad, certainly, but they get so many other things intentionally wrong while trying to tell the same story, and trying to split the difference doesn't really work, here. Too many differences didn't work for this film, and staying the same for the sequel didn't work, either-- both are, in the end, bad efforts for different reasons. Not to mention the inclusion of Pyramid Head for the sake of 'having an iconic monster'-- PH is specific to James Sunderland, his complex collection of mental issues, guilt, sexual repression, and a desire for punishment. His presence in both films is a travesty.

    everything good in this movie came from the games. Everything original is mediocre. Women in this movie werent strong. THey could just have Harry like the original and have more time to show him and his daughter together and the movie could have a better story. The ending is a shitty cliffhanger that didnt even tie well with the next movie. I think this is another bad video game movie, just a lil less mediocre.

  • @conman17

    @conman17

    im sure someone said this already but in the behind the scenes on the dvd, they [the director i believe] said the way that Harry acted in the game, with how sensitive and determined he is, translated more to that of a mothers love. Now in my opinion to add onto that, I think maybe because dahlia was the mother of alessa and the line "mother is god in the eyes of a child" (which i dont remember if it was in the game or not) kinda ties into the correlation with dahlia and rose and then alessa and sharron. so that would help with the story tie ins with the two characters and the way they care for their children, but i think its also a culture thing with the ideology that a mothers love is the strongest on earth.
