Signs Your Frontosa Aquarium is Crashing

This video goes over several signs that you can recognize when your cyphotilapia frontosa aquarium is crashing. I go over the methods I used to improve and then fix the situation long term. These methods are not all what people would consider doing in the aquarium hobby.

Great info. For me when I notice something wrong I definitely stop feeding but I also do a large water change. No body is perfect and life can get in the way of tank maintenance easily. It happens to all of use. Love the Frontosa videos 😊✌️

If the fish aren't eating as much they're likely stressed unless they're sexually mature males or females that are holding. The males will fast sometimes especially if females are around :)

I do agree that competition with other fish sometimes get your frontosas more active and to be better eaters. Frontosas seem to take much longer to adapt to a new aquarium as well.

My one frontosa has a small like pimple marks on the body, at first i thought it was just a scale that came out, but after how many weeks they become more the body. What should i do?

What were your water tests reading when it was crashing? For me I do 75% water change every week and a half, plus I gravel vac, I do leave my rocks dirty because of the algae growing on them I just shake the detritus off. Also I alternate on cleaning filters every 3 weeks. Great video Ricky!

Very interesting, would be good to know what your nitrates levels were, l have 18 Frontosa from 12" down to 4" in a 600g tank, l have a large aquaponic bed attached and also a continuous drip water change system. It took all this to get my nitrates down to about 10-15ppm. Thanks for a great video. Paul UK

Nice. If the nitrates are that high it may be filtration that is the issue. I have about 60 frontosa in a 400 system now and the water is crystal clear no nitrates.

Wow, 60 Frontosa sounds very impressive l bet they look wonderful. My ammonia & nitrite levels are zero so am fairly happy with my filtration which is a large wet/dry system with 2 sumps plus aquaponic bed. To get zero nitrates with 60 Fronts is very impressive, you must be a slave to water changes or have mastered the final part of the nitrogen cycle, which l never have. Am fairly happy with nitrates at 10-15ppm any less and the plants suffer. Good luck with all those Fonts. Paul UK

I don’t use it anymore because you have to replace some with every water 💦 change and it got too expensive. I also believe it brought about more ph fluctuations by using it and that was not good for my fish 🐠! I think with practice it would be ok to do but increases the cost of keeping the fish!

Ricky I like your videos, I Learn a lot from them, but need help. So this is it , l live in homestead Florida, use well water, water change every week 50 %, l have 40 frontosas about 6 inches in 150 gallons, feed them once a day, pellets. For the last year-and-a-half I have no problems now about five of them have the bloat , I have another tank 40 gallon about 20 of them and three have bloat. Any advice from a wise man I will take any help I can get I appreciate it thank you

I suggest not feeding them for a week and adding pure aloe vera to the water. You can buy it cheaply in the pharmacy section of wal-mart. The aloe vera not only helps slime coat but helps in the digestive systems of both humans and fish! As far as adding anything to help with bloat that is all I personally recommend! If you ever get constipated you can drink some and you will realize how it can help the fish! There are also a few frontosa groups on facebook that may give you different advice!

Rick, if the frontosa are breathing hard there is either not enough movement in the water or they are stressed for another reason. I am not trying to offend but you are putting some serious misinformation out about these animals. First, FRONTOSA SHOULD NOT COME TO THE TOP OF THE TANK FOR FOOD. You need to use sinking pellets. This is how frontosa eat as they live deep in the lake. Coming up to the surface can cause bloat. YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST DO WATER CHANGES. Frontosa are extremely hardy fish however rest assured you must do water changes unless you are over killing filtration WITH CARBON or the fish will not be happy. The ammonia doesn't evaporate. You should test your water. Also the tank looks really dirty you need to scrub or get some plecos in there :) Finally, your Frontosa seem unusually docile which could mean they are stressed however frontosa are extremely aggressive towards one another and will require hiding spaces especially after sexual maturity. I'm sure you're aware from your other vids I have seen. Keep up the videos 👏

In the 8 to 9 years of keeping frontosas I have never had any with bloat. I mostly base my decisions on things I experience with my own fish. I have fed floating pellets throughout the time I have kept frontosas with no ill effect and there is less waste because of this. As far as ammonia is concerned it is broken down by beneficial bacteria into nitrite then into nitrate. This is important information to fish keepers. Algae takes out nitrates from the water 24 hours a day if you leave the light on and is used in water treatment plants commercially to filter sewage waste. In fact algae and plants will be used in the future on Mars to filter the drinking water supply long term. Thank you for letting me clarify my views!
