Oftentimes in “ethical” cults the leaders are so brainwashed themselves that they believe they’re truly helping society with their cultish practices
Its worth mentioning that a cult doesn't have to be particularly religious. Non religious cults exist, cults of personality, or cults of ideas. This is especially prevalent where online communities are concerned.

My mum integrated my brother and I into a cult that was named a “religion” when I was very young. I watched the woman I once loved change completely, then she spent the rest of my years in the cult trying to change us. At 16 I ran away and never went back. 5 years later and completely cut off from everything and everyone I knew, I’m still haunted by loss and coming to terms with the fact that there is no closure, just pushing forward, and being free.

In my country Kenya, we are going through a disheartening saga of people who got convinced by their spiritual leader to starve themselves to death in order to meet Jesus face to face. The death toll stands at over 200 with children among the victims. There is even evidence that some of the children were strangled to put them out of their misery by "expediting" their appointment with Jesus. This is quite timely and offers a deep perspective on what is really going on since most of us are utterly befuddled and heartbroken.

Signs I’ve come up with: 1. Faith based reasoning. Once you relinquish your thoughts & are willing to take a brief system without any evidence, groupthink is potent & literally can shape your worldview. 2. Us vs. Them phenomena. We are all just humans trying our best to survive this planet. Some of us, like to think of ourselves as inherently different from one another because of stories, mythology &/or beliefs. Fear holds us back from experiencing our very nature. And an organised group that seeks power ensures that “only they get you” question this. 3. There is collective shame/humiliation for non conformance. Whatever rituals or reasons, these are all conjectures of the human mind. However, there is strength in numbers and the framework that is created with a specific worldview, however myopic, is built on repercussions. After all, if there were none, there would be no group.

I was in a Jehovah Witnesses cult from 0-13 years old, I was dragged there by my parents and I couldn't STAND being there throughout all of these years. My father died in front of my eyes when I was 9, and I kept going there with my mom so that she is not alone. I never believed this BS, there were breadcrumbs of fear of Jehovah in me while I was a kid, but somehow deep down I knew that this doesn't make any sense as there were a lot of inconsistencies and illogical speeches that I was constantly hearing there. At the age of 13 I told my mom that I am not interested in this anymore and that I'll never go there again. Now I'm 32. There were around 20 kids that were also dragged by their parents constantly, all of these kids grew up to be Jehovah Witnesses and they still are today. The indoctrination in this cult is pretty heavy and hard to get out of, but I'm not even sure how this did not get to me and I can only be thankful for that. My mother is still a JW - heavily indoctrinated one. She is out of touch with the reality, she believes that ARMAGEDDON is around the corner - she believes that for 32 years that I know of already. It's a sad situation to be constantly seeing your mother in this stadium, but at this point I know that I cannot help her in any way - the JW people are very hard to rationalize with.

And I've been thinking this a lot recently since I'm so stressed because of school and even at home I can not think if myself as a human but just a student, micro managing time and thinking all the time in terms of how like if I watch 20mins more of KZread, how many hours will I have to study everyday and what subjects how much to complete the assignments. I have this weird issue where I actually find it difficult to *stay on* social media due to how overwhelming it is. Like for me, I’ve never adjusted to how much stimuli is thrown at us throw the various social media sites and even seeing stock footage of someone scrolling through TikTok actually gave me a bit of anxiety. Probably has something to do with my literal autism, needing space to recharge, potentially meltdowns/trauma triggers without warning etc. KZread is the only one that I still use and even then I rarely watch anything that I didn’t deliberately search up, was uploaded by a channel I’m subbed to or was linked to by a friend. Like even KZread shorts put me on edge.
As an exmo, the term "authoritarian group" from Steven Hassan to me is more descriptive and wide encompassing. It may feel like it's diluting the punch of "cult like", but if people study it, it perfectly explains the spectrum of control and manipulation even places we take for granted change us to favor the authoritarian group. While we'd like to think that we'd object to this, there are clear examples of how most people go along with this. I don't even think that it's all bad exactly, but in fact it's the little good things that make us stay in the influence of these groups. Growing up, I loved how my "religion" protected me from being an alcoholic. Still was a cult though.

I was in a religious cult for ten years. They were real good at misinterpreting the Bible. I studied and found them to be liars, we were told not to study on our own. One of their main tenants was that we needed to keep the "Ordinances of washings", and certain days and weeks of worship. Jesus was rarely mentioned in their magazine The Plain Truth, He may have been mentioned as an aside, Herbert Armstrong was the Man of God. Now there are many splinter groups all emulating Armstrong, I used to monitor the fakes, all talking like The Man of God.

Yikes🙀 I went to a church that felt like a cult⛪😳
Online cults are often overlooked. A good example are "the Bears." Owen, or "Big Bear" as all his cult members call him, has ALL the traits of a cult leader. His only defense he claims against this is that he says he doesn't sleep with cult members or their wives. And that's just based off of his word. He consistently yells and demeans his audience, demands they send him their hard-earned money lest he throws a temper tantrum, immediately bans anyone who disagrees with him or says something he doesn't like, ex-communicates and attacks the character and reputation of people who leave the cult or speak out against him (often even bringing their family and children into it), has literally every symptom of narcisstic personality disorder, makes them choose a "Bear" name and refers to them only as that instead of letting them use their own names, and gaslights his audience constantly. The clips archived by Milker Nation show Owen's lies and scams for what they are. And don't even get me started on the land scam, which is provably a scam as shown by MN's archived clips. He said if the goal for his land where they can, and I quote, "do cult sh-t" and have "weapons training," falls through that he would refund the money. He changed his tune and later said he never said that. And instead of selling the land and buying it somewhere else where he can fulfill his original promise, he's asking for more money from his followers for more land (that's all in HIS name, mind you). It's really obvious that anyone who sends him money to purchase the land is brainwashed. Even if they buy into his false promises and donate, they could still be banned at any moment from saying something Owen takes the wrong way if he's in the wrong mood and not be able to go to the land whatsoever. And trust, the banning rate is HIGH. To see Owen's true colors, watch the HighImpactFlix interview. It's nothing but narcisstic rage, gaslighting, demeaning, screaming, and not being able to handle someone disagreeing with him. It's shocking that a grown man would behave that way. And it's a good representation of who Owen truly is.
Interesting.
Take a bow 🙇♂️

The west makes the halal difficult, and the haram easily accessible. I'm Congolese, born in Canada and I completely agree. Connect with nature. Meditate. Talk to the creator. The thing is the west is all superficial. City life is superficial. Banks, credit, all this fake stuff that don't mean anything in the grand scheme of things.
slightly interesting topic but it's all over the place. there are good indicators to decide whether something is a cult, discord groups and fandoms are very unlikely to be a cult. one indicator that u mentioned is good which is behavioural control, but being unable to stop consuming media/fomo doesnt really qualify as behavioural control. i don't think saying cults exist on a spectrum is good nor useful....

@@Dillarune as a cult survivor, i view it the other way though? it show's how normalized authoritarian viewpoint's/structures/methods are in our culture. i agree that the "not harmful" framing is messed up, and a better framing would be dilute rather than not harmful, because something can still be harmful and still be considered dilute. kind of like how sipping a teaspoon of trash water is still considered unhealthy versus eating half a pound of trash. a great book i just picked up is "the myth of normal". there's a lot of normalized toxicity in our culture, and calling that out i think is healthy. rather than undermining the term, i think it show's how useful it actually is, BECAUSE it can be used widely. sure, i think there is potential for a number of false positives and bad actors, but i actually do think critically thinking about these thing's actually leads to less false positives and less bad actor's than letting the culture be uncritical. and yes, online space's are controlled by corporations, which is a hierarchical authoritarian structure. the organizational cult that i used to belong to was the Mormon's, which is as corporate as can be. doesn't mean that the internet shouldn't exist, merely that it needs core restructuring.
Crap. I'm in a cult and I didn't know it. I left....just now. It hurt to know but hurts more knowing now what I could have looked past. I hold. Things. But I know its BS. Oh well. You win some you lose some. Still playing. That's what matters...right?

I never see videos diving deep on how regular families can behave like a cult if one or both parents are narcissistic, abusive, and intend to control their kids, partners of their kids, grandkids, etc.
Definitions Cult: A small, unpopular religion. Religion: A large, popular cult.
So you're telling me i was in a cult.... for 10 years?

Another sign is that you have flags of a political candidate on your truck and are in denial of him committing crimes and treason.

Thank you for the video. I was part of the Mormon cult for 28 years. I was born in a Mormon family, and I even served a mission for 2 years. During most of this time, I defended them with all my power. I couldn't stand someone telling me they were a cult. I felt pity for those outside. Through 2016-18 I discovered I new passion for Astronomy and Physics. It became a hobby for me to study science, but at the same time I was still very into Mormonism. I could see that both were true, so I decided to connect the dots an connect Mormonism with Science, and that's when I started to realize how wrong everything was in this 'religion' and in being part of any religion. I left Mormonism for good in 2018. My whole family is still part of this cult, and there is nothing I can tell them that would make them even think about leaving it. They think I was influenced by scientists and by the desires of the world. I still see them often, and we learned how to avoid certain topics, but I 'myself' can see clearly how the Mormon cult influences them in all of their arguments and opinions about every world topic. It's truly sad that our human minds are so corrupted that we human kind had to create cults and religions in order to corrupt and control other people.
The first 16second makes me mad. Dont rub it on my face 😂

Read the book “Mere Christianity” or read the Gospel yourself rather than just getting your talking points from redditors. Every society that becomes secular collapses for a reason, and the US is heading in that direction.
I’m in a ethical cult for one piece lmao

I think it’s funny that the three other fan here found my comment
The Sun is about to put an end to the Cult of the Sacred Screen.
I was a hyperian for 3 years and involved in the hyperian movement between 2014 and 2017. Once you leave, the "friends" you had disappear.
First thumbnail looked nice but this thumb looks like it needs and has to tell you something very specific.
Just high ...but isn't it possible for the incogni guys to get your information sell it or put it in suspicious places of the internet and then send you screenshots of your info in suspicious spaces as evidence that your information was being ....you know😁😁
I caught that Bojack Horseman reference...

I feel like the word cult is ruined. You cant be in a cult if you live at home. You cant be in a cult if theres no supernatural belief. Without those 2 things ANYTHING could be labled a cult.
