Signs of Amoxicillin Allergy

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello, I’m Dr. Carole Keim and today I’m going to teach you how to spot an amoxicillin allergy. It takes 7-10 days of amoxicillin to cause an allergy the first time, so if your child has gotten their first amoxicillin and gets a rash just before the medicine is going to run out, they might be allergic. In some children, the allergy appears the second time they take it. If your child has already had two courses of amoxicillin it’s unlikely that they will develop an allergy, but still possible.
An amoxicillin rash will look like little pink spots all over your child’s chest and back, and will spread to the arms, legs, and face. It may be itchy but it may not.
If you think your child might be having an allergic reaction to any medication, call a doctor right away. If you live in or near Boulder and the doctor’s office is closed, call me and I’ll come to your home and save you an ER visit!

I’m currently going through a bad case of hives. I took a amoxicillin for 10 days the next day I broke out in hives, it’s so horrible.

"It might be itchy, it might not"? Mine is so itchy, I could scratch it with a steel brush, and pour alcohol in the open cuts. That would be better than the itching!!!

I got hives after 10 days of Augmentin. Wound up at the ER getting IV steroids and a boatload of antihistamines. It took 12 hours for the insane itching to subside, and nearly 2 weeks for the hives to fade away. On penicillin allergy testing a month or so later, I passed the prick and ID injection parts with flying colors, and on the oral challenge I was fine after one hour of observation. True to form (my repeated tendency to get delayed-type hypersensitivity), I started in with the hives FIVE DAYS LATER, lol. So my allergist (yeah, i now have one) says I am allergic to it, but he also says my reactions are mild enough that in a crisis, I can take it as long as I also get antihistamines and maybe steroids to help me soldier through it.

I had an allergic reaction to amoxicillin in 2020 (months before the pandemic hit), and BOY DID IT ITCH! We had to head for the ER and it turned out I had an allergic reaction to that amoxicillin. I was taking it for a sinus infection, btw.

I had the same reaction with a full body rash with hives that itched like nothing I have ever experienced in my life. I would numb my legs by rinsing them in ice cold water to stop the itch. My face and ears were pulsating, red all over and swollen. Went to the ER twice before they prescribed me meds for it. It was hell. Took about a week to fade away. Needless to say I couldn’t sleep at all for a couple of days.

I took amoxicillin more than two times, probably 4 or 5 times before, and after my wisdom teeth surgery got a rash two days after taking the antibiotic given (which was amoxicillin). It started as a rash all over my face, mostly red blotches, and spread in the course of a week down to my toes, lasting a total of two weeks, because the redness went away and all that was left were bumps, which took time to go away. Never went to the doc for it because it eventually went away, but was told to stop the medication... don’t know if I’m really allergic to the amoxicillin or the pain killer, because I had stopped taking the painkiller after only a day.. It was almost like I had goosebumps, like every pore on my body was inflamed, and it was superrr itchy, even when they weren’t red anymore. So annoying!

I had an allergic to amoxicillin recently when I was taking it for a sinus infection. And to think I NEVER had allergic reactions to medications. So I'm not going to be taking amoxicillin any more because of doctor's orders.

I am going through this right now. I was given amoxicillin after surgery to remove all 4 of my wisdom teeth. I broke out and it wasn't so bad, didn't think much of it. It went away in one day. Then I had a painful infection for whatever reason about a week ago in the back of my mouth. They gave me more amoxicillin and I am now covered head to two in the most profusely itchy rash I've ever had. Between my fingers is ultra itchy, waste, thighs, arms, back. It's so bad. I just went into the doctor to get a cortisone shot. After one hour of moderate relief it came back with a vengeance. I am soooooooooooo itchy. It's insane.

Holy I got prescribed amoxicillin yesterday and noticed chest tightness and shortness of breath within an hour of taking it. Then I took another pill this morning and it happened again so I asked the pharmacist and she said it was an allergic reaction 🗿
