Signal Flow EXPLAINED (by NYC studio head engineer)

Музыка

Signal flow in the studio is the path that sound takes from: sound source -- microphones -- cables -- preamps -- outboard gear -- to the computer.
Understanding your signal flow will help you troubleshoot many of the problems that inevitably pop up during the recording process.
By knowing signal flow, you can locate the source of the problem and create a work-around to keep a session and your creativity moving smoothly.

    What happens after the signal reaches pro tools? How do you use the outboard gear or plugins, automate and mixdown to a stereo output? This is what I've been hunting for on KZread. The flow of signal reaching Pro tools is clear. What happens thereafter is a riddle!

  • @ZipZone100

    i know its been a year but if anyone reading this hasn't found the answer yet, you need to have an interface that has input ins & out. A basic focustrite scarlett 2i2 for example does not have this option, since the only 2 outs are usually used for your Monitors. Many interfaces just slightly above that price range like the UAD apollo's do have the option of having multiple in and out options. Then in your DAW you set the output of the channel itself to your interface out which ends up where ever you chose to wire it.

    This is great.! Thank you for showing us the signal flow of your setup. This really helps clear things up for me. I'll have to check out more of your videos. Does the converter connect to the computer directly, or is it sitting in a different part of the signal flow? What cables are used for the converter?

  • @lovesciencemusic

    @lovesciencemusic

    4 ай бұрын

    Yes, converter always connects direct to computer or to computers HD cards if you’re running a baller protools HD system. Nowadays i think most interfaces are running Thunderbolt

    Thanks for this! I have just one question: To get the signal out from the console, which output do you use from the console to go to the converter? Main Output? Or direct output?

  • @lovesciencemusic

    @lovesciencemusic

    4 ай бұрын

    I think it depends on the console. SSLs for example sometimes have 5 sets of stereo outs. There are outs for the summed mix which are different from the outs that go to the various sets of studio monitors

  • @Roensmusic
    @Roensmusic2 жыл бұрын

    i was actually curious how the converter is connected to the protools computer. can you record all the channels separately in protools?

  • @lovesciencemusic

    @lovesciencemusic

    4 ай бұрын

    Through the protools HDX cards with DB25 cables. You need one channel of conversion for every mic you’d like to record simultaneously. So if you wanna record 24 mics on a live band, you’ll need 24 channels of conversion on your interface

    Thanks for the video! Where does the audio interface come into play? After the analog signal goes through the analog to digital converter, does it go through the audio interface, then Pro Tools? Thanks!

  • @lovesciencemusic

    @lovesciencemusic

    4 жыл бұрын

    Glad you dig it. The audio interface is the converter, they are the same thing. So the audio goes from mics, to preamps, to the interface which converters analogue signals to digital signals, which then go to the computer and into the DAW

    Wait how is mic channel 1 routed to the console and -> the DAW?

  • @lovesciencemusic

    @lovesciencemusic

    4 жыл бұрын

    It’s ‘normaled’ from the XLR wall panel to the console preamps to the the interface to the computer to the DAW. The patch bay is the middle man that lets you route anywhere

  • @johnlee750
    @johnlee7502 жыл бұрын

    So when the signal reaches the pre-amp, does it go through the entire channel strip flow and then get sent to outboard gear, the audio interface and the DAW, or does the signal go from the pre-amp directly to the outboard gear, and then back to the channel EQ and Fader before being sent to the audio interface and the DAW?

  • @lovesciencemusic

    @lovesciencemusic

    On most consoles you can actually route it either way - you would need to patch it or use the consoles insert sends and returns. So you can put the pieces of gear in whatever order you want via your patching
