Sign Language Interpreter During Hurricane Irma Actually Communicated Gibberish

A sign language interpreter who appeared at a Florida press conference before Hurricane Irma hit was actually signing gibberish, according to members of the deaf community. Experts say Marshall Greene signed words including "pizza," "monsters" and "bear hug." Officials in Manatee County say they asked Greene, who's a paramedic and lifeguard, to step in because he knows a little sign language and no one else was available. His brother, who is hearing-impaired, has since defended him. #InsideEdition

Reading the headline I immediately thought it was some idiot doing fake hand gestures and trolling during important broadcast. But having watched the story, how can anyone be mad at the man? He told them he wasn't sure he could do it and they put him there anyway because he's all they had. It doesn't seem like he did it maliciously.

Reguardless, we can't necessarily fault him, they knew, but didn't care. they obviously felt the need to appear to be 'inclusive' as mainly only deaf people would know that he wasn't actually signing.. It looks to me that Manatee County Officials threw him to the wolves. He told them he did not think he could do it but they had him do it anyway. The family said signing for a disaster/evacuation is very different from what you would sign for everyday life. I can see how those words might correlate to what he was trying to say: pizza = food, monster = disaster/danger, and bear hug = shelter in place. County officials could have closed captioned the warning instead of sending out a novice who probably only signs to communicate to his family. You don't send a person who knows just enough of a language to just get them by in their day to day life to conduct peace talks with an enemy, you send in your best interpreter to do the job and, if you can't find one near you, you look everywhere for one. I am guessing that the county officials were either being lazy or did not have the technology to do closed captioning.

Well there's an ongoing debate in the Deaf and interpreting communities about which does more harm: having an ineffective interpreter, or no interpreter at all. To some people, the answer seems obvious, but the reality is that it truly is a tough dilemma. Sometimes, depending on the situation, one is a slightly better choice than the other or is slightly more workable, but most of the time it's a judgement call where, either way, the Deaf people/person is receives a disservice And for a community that is routinely dismissed, disenfranchised, underestimated, and pushed aside... It's yet another incident of being left out and looked down on as less important

Even as a bilingual who would consider themselves sufficiently fluent in both languages, If an official suddenly asked me to translate an urgent message I am not sure it would go well either. So I can see how he was definitely not equipped to translate at full speed with limited ASL vocabulary. The fact that a life threatening disaster announcement by a county official was not planned to have accessibility to the disabled is the real failure. You wouldn’t have had a “gibberish interpretations” if such requirements had been thought about ahead of time. What I find more despicable is that Inside Edition used his video in another piece, with 8 million views, as an example of “fake ASL Interpreters”. The piece focused around a women signing gibberish. The difference was that she had previous history and a string of criminal fraud charges. More ridiculously she was doing it for the Tampa Police. She came in and just asked if they needed an Interpreter and they didn’t think about it twice. Her signing was complete none sense and for the most part no words much less complete sentences correlated with the announcement. When he’s saying “Pizza” for food, or “Monster” for something scary it’s him trying to interpret to the best of his limited ASL knowledge and I imagine an announcement about a “historic storm” will include words that see limited use in regular English vocabulary. Even if he did have the vocabulary, being a good interpreter takes practice, planning and time to master. It’s an unacceptable and for the most part unintelligible interpretation but it’s the fault of the officials for it to have gotten as far as it did. In the other piece Inside Edition interviewed a Tampa PR official who took responsibility for the mistake. Why wasn’t this done in this piece and why did Insider Edition continue use him as an example in stories relating to fraudulent interpreters? If he was not contracted by them ahead of time to Interpret for the announcement, how can we not put the blame on the officials?

Darcy Tucker To show that the guy didn't offer to sign, he was put in the position to do so, and now he's being roasted alive for it. And honestly, the storm was taking odd turns left and right- do you really think that 'Manatee county' would be as prepared at the last moment as the governor of Florida? You have to pay an interpreter, and some of these areas can barely afford to fund elementary schools.

The hurricane wasn't a surprise, it didn't sneak up on them. And the concept of a live press conference during a crisis is not a new one, nor is hiring a qualified interpreter for such a conference (as required by law under the ADA). There was irresponsibility from both parties. I do not believe in any manner that this man or his family should be crucified or harassed or even kinda bothered. But I do believe he made a mistake that should be turned into a lesson for everyone, an example of what not to do. And of course the many mistakes that went into not having an interpreter then asking this guy in the first place.

He was not "actually signing total gibberish." He was doing his best, finger-spelling what he didn't know, and occasionally getting signs slightly wrong so they were (willfully) misinterpreted by fluent speakers. (for instance, one captioner said he said "evacu10te," but "10" is *almost* identical to "a.") He was forced to do it at the last second and didn't feel qualified, so they made him.
