Great comparison, great video. So much information. Thank you🙌🏾
Thanks for this GREAT review man. You just helped me save $1,500. I had ordered the Canon RF lenses, but cancelled it once I saw that the Sigma was practically identical. The Canon might have a tiny advantage in certain focusing scenarios, but it's stuff I would never notice or care about so I cancelled the order and just got the Sigma for $1,099 vs $2,600 for the RF.

yeah I'll be honest the onyl differences I noticed from this video were that the sigma was letting in less light(assuming settings were identical), and the focusing took a bit longer but not $1500 less light and extra focus time
This really helped me choose Josh! Thank you.
Great comparison, great video. Thank you!
That image stabilisation in the canon is crazy good, as a video maker that’s probably the biggest selling point for me with the c70
Thanks! Great video! Was in the market for a 24-70. Had the Tamron 24-70 G2 but was never satisfied. Too soft and low contrast at the long end. Because i want IS i have to consider between those two lenses. Was able to get a almost new Sigma a few days ago for a good price. Thought i might give it a shop before i empty my pockets for the Canon RF. And i'm really happy so far. I like the images it produces. The lens itself feels great. Much better overall than the Tamron. AF is super fast and accurate. Love it!
Great review! Thank you so much!
Thanks for that. Just out of curiousity, were you using the same WB for both lenses? I know most Sigmas are generally warmer than Canon glass but I didn't expect the huge difference seen at 04:30 where the Sigma has way more punch and "glow" in the skintones. If that is good or bad is personal I guess. But here I tend to prefer the Sigma fwiw.
wow you blew my mind with something you said at the beginning, I had no idea the so famous canon 24-70 EF had no IS !!!! I was thinking of saving money not getting the RF and instead getting the canon, but the IS is a deal breaker for me. I should go with the Sigma Art 24-70 then since it has IS (or OS as sigma calls it) and it costs less. It's not as sharp as the canon but I need the IS for video.
Thanks for making this video. I've been wondering about that Sigma.
Great video! I didn’t want to settle and went for RF 24-70 but man that sigma was definitely a real thought for me. I am finally moving up in camera gear and just didn’t want to think about compromising on a lens that will likely be on the camera most of the time. May go sigma with adapter for other lenses. I hope canon opens up the RF mount to aftermarket sooner than later. Makes me wonder what sigma could accomplish on the new mount.
Awesome comparison. Thank you so much. You got a new follower. Love from Switzerland

The IS in the RF seems to work a lot better than the Sigma. In the sigma video I can see some micro movements than I would like to stabilize after in premiere. The RF one seems "already post stabilized".
Just got my Canon R7 because of your reviews, would hope you would use the R7 sometimes because of the aps-c difference when comparing lenses or other things :)
I’m 30 seconds in but already this is great. I got the RF version because I wanted to simplify my kit (around R6 and EOS R) but I mainly shoot portraits (sigma 85 and 135 Art, and RF 70-200) and the 24-70 is relegated to KZread videos and BTS shots mostly- it’s driving me nuts knowing I’ve got so much equity in a lens that I basically use for fun only. Been thinking of selling off the RF and getting sigma’s 24-70 Art or Tamron’s 24-70 G2 then maybe ditching my EOS R for an R5…

The focus breathing on the sigma was apparent . I didnt notice it on the canon. Also try the tameron G2 and compare it to The RF
I own the sigma and love it. Almost never leaves my camera. Only gripes are the weight of the lens (for some applications) and the barrel extends when zooming.

I think I'll just go with the Sigma. I'm not making money from my photography and I've already saved 1k$ by buying EF versions of L lenses instead of RF ones. They work great and you can't really tell the difference. I've read some photography books and even some pros used tamron and sigma lenses on Canon DSLR bodies.

Great review. I think I liked the Sigma slightly better for my preference. I think it will be my next purchase tomorrow.
one thing on the autofocus noise. the sigma is notably louder than the canon due to canon's USM. However; you didn't hear the sigma in this test because your ambient audio lowered the gain on the internal mic of the camera. If you are in quieter environments, the autogain will increase and the "ticks" of the sigma's AF will become very apparent.

the sigma and the rf 28-70 are very very noisy when focusing, especially when in quiet rooms. the 24-70 seems to be pretty quiet
Are any of these lenses parfocal? How is the focus audio when it catches or misses focus? I'm seriously considering buying one of them (and I can't say much about the audio since it's silent, so I'm reconfirming)
Wow, the noise level of Sigma 24-70 is amazing! Have you tested other Sigma lenses (24art/35art/50art etc.)? Thanks!
Sigma is great! I have this lens the only thing is its weight. it's quite heavy. but for sure outperforms EF lens

Thank you for the comparison, it helped me a lot. I have an RF and I love the lens. But I'm a hobbyist and I'm considering selling my rf and buying a sigma here in the UK. As you said, the used RF goes for 2100 or 2200 and I found a sigma for 800 used. I could invest in other EF lenses with the same money that I have invested in my RF. Have you noticed a more pronounced yellowish tone in the sigma or do you think is just a white balance matter? Thank you once again

Glad the video was helpful. Yeah, you can save quite a bit of money with the Sigma. I didn't notice a color shift between the two lenses. For the tests in this video I had the white balance on the Sunny setting in the R5 and didn't make any color corrections, just exposure adjustments.
I dig my Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 I will eventually move to Canon RF 24-70 2.8 If for any reason, just so I eliminate the need for the adapter and also I believe mayched with the R5 & R6 the stabilization will be a notch above. The Canon RF 14-35mm F4 IS that lens stabilized with both my R5 & R6 is ridiculous. The one place I may go with sigma is.. primes.. I'd like to grab the 24mm, 50mm, 85mm & 105mm.

Fantastic review. Thank you so much. I have longed to buy the Canon after renting it to use with my R6. It was the BEST shoot of my life. BUT the price! If there wasn't a SIGMA that looks SO CLOSE, I'd still have held out for Canon. BUT there is the SIGMA. So I just ordered the Sigma (which is on sale - normally $1299 and right now $1141) and wanted to refresh my memory about why it was so good so I came here and saw the review I'd previously liked :). Sigma was as good or better than the Canon in all cases except Sigma AF was audible (and so is the Sigma 18-35 that I own and LOVE) but not significant. And if I'm micro nitpicking, the IS "could have" a little more nano movements. Canon is double the price so this is an easy Sigma win for me (although I hope they eliminate the motor sound to the Canon level and charge the same).

What kind of microphone did you use when comparing AF noise of both lenses?
Great review Thanks. Do you know If the sigma works with AF focus speed Settings (found on c70 R5c …)
canon have really dropped the ball on the RF system. They were behind the mirrorless curve against sony, and also prevented third party manufacturing. Unfortunately, people have realised just how capable old ef lenses and tamron and sigma lenses are with the R bodies, that their prices are still staying up. I mean even 3-4 yr old 24-70's don't go for anything less that 700$ on ebay
I had the canon RF version and it took a very slight knock against a padded chair that actually broke the outer body in that it twisted away from the inner mechanicals and couldn’t be fixed. The RF lenses are not as tough as the EF lenses and nowhere near as strong as the Sigma Art equivalent which is far more robust.
If you like the 24-70 you would love the 28-70 RF. I have both and they are very similar in use but the 28 just has a little more magical feel to the rendering. It's certainly not good for "walk around" use tho. One thing to note about the 24-70 is the close focusing.

Nice one Josh, I shot with the Sigma on an Eos R for 2 years, then switched to the R5 with the RF lens. I much prefer the Canon lens. Especially form factor and feel when holding it. I found the Sigma very front heavy on the adaptor. Edit: also, the focus ring went twice on the Sigma in the time I had it and i had to send it in for repair. I found it to be very poor for manual focus.

11 ай бұрын
Thank you. Although I don't think I've ever tried that combo, it should work as you would expect.
Canon seems to have more shallow depth of field and better autofocus. The sigma seems to have more darker contrast
I preferred the Canon for the colors it produced, the seemingly smoother stabilization, and it's focusing. I'd say the Sigma was very close in comparison to the point where if I had that lens I'd probably keep it. As for buying one or the other... I think that really comes down to the price difference and whether or not the slight advantage is worth ~$700-1100 price difference. I'm leaning towards the Canon personally. I think it'll perform better for the event photography I typically do.
I think sigma has a slightly redish color on the shadows, while the canon is more muted and natural. In perfect lighting situations might not matter, but I am almost never in perfect lighting situations and will almost allways have to see those little differences magnify x 10 wile editing. I could be wrong though.
Quand on veut montrer un objet, on ne le secoue pas devant l'objectif. A part ça, merci pour tout !
My Sony Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8 is amazingly sharp. Distortion is bad at 24mm but with 32mpix its ok to crop a little. Had the EF 24-70 and it was my got to lens. I have the R6 also but ended up getting the RF 24-105 as my walk around. Had it for 2 years and bought the Sigma recently for the Sony mostly because of grad and proms this year. Just wish Sigma created some RF lenses.
There is one BIG difference with RF vs Sigma EF versions - canon lens is much LESS shaky since the combination of lens And ibis work together. You get this (hand)+ icon shown. Meanwhile with sigma you have NO „+” sign, meaning stabilisation of lens And IBIS do not work in pair. Adding the adapter to EF gives additional weigth to sigma which is quite significant at the end.

Oh man. That's a tough decision. It depends on what you are using it for and what your other lenses are. If you are doing video and need the IS, then maybe the Sigma over the EF 2.8 II and it's cheaper. Nowadays you can get a pretty cheap used copy of the EF 2.8 II though. I think it really comes down to personal preference, they have slightly different character. I personally prefer the Canon lenses a bit. If you are doing video and might be doing two camera shoots, then having lenses from the same family is helpful for matching footage. Hope that helps!
