I'd go for the Lumix S 1.8 lenses as a group, so the rendition matches perfectly between all of them. Plus the 85 1.8 S is lighter and more travel friendly.

I hope to get the LUMIX. For my budget, it seems like it’s a great lens. If I had a big budget, I might choose the Sigma, but I might not. For my purposes it doesn’t have much of an advantage.

Hi Eric! Glad my video helps and enjoy your S1H beast! If you do MF for video, the Sigma is quite nice with it's declicked aperture ring option. oh but one thing i forgot to mention in the video, the Sigma doesn't seem to respect the linear/non-linear MF ring setting on the Panasonic body, always act in non-linear way

Thanks for the comparison video. I'm very tempted to go full frame with the S5. I'd personally go with the Lumix 85mm. Reason being they're likely going to make the 35mm and 50mm very similar in weight, and most likely will be having the same filter thread across the lenses. Meaning you'll have an easier time with gimbal work with these primes. And these lenses are more adept with the current Lumix dfd autofocusing system for video work.

Does this lens have a stair-step aperture or a smooth ramping aperture? I noticed that the Sigma 24mm DG DN lens on L mount DOES star-step. The same lens on Sony is NOT crippled. So,...it seems that Lumix is playing games on some Sigma lenses. If you are on a gimbal and want the S1H or S5-IIX to run auto aperture,...you will get exposure "jolts" as the aperture lens in each 1/3 stop step. I literally returned this 24mm immediately because of this. Do you know if they crippled the Sugma 85 aperture or is it smooth ramping? (FYI,...Lumix branded lens do NOT have a crippled star-step ramping aperture)

A comparison from you of the Lumix s pro 24 70 vs the Sigma 24 70 would be nice, since almost no one addresses comparisons as detailed as yours,I saw one that is in German, I don't understand anything it says but at least it tests vignetting, flare, focus distortion and construction quality, but a comparison like the one would be good. yours on the s5ii and if it is really worth paying the extra for the Lumix s pro since both lenses are still widely used today and there are almost no comparisons with the new AF system.

Really great video, I have the Sigma you test with the S1 And my experience with it is 100% what you describe. I didn't test the Panasonic 85mm but from what I see I would say to people who wonder which one to buy: if you can wait for the Panasonic do it, its lighter cheaper and I don't see a much difference in quality with the Sigma. But if you can't wait, the sigma is a really great quality lens even if I wouldn't advise it for video.

Hi Richard, great review as always, I just purchased the Sigma as per your review and suggestion, I can't believe how sharp it is even at f1.4, I don't mean is sharp like everyone says is sharp, I mean sharp like nothing I have seen before, I had the Sony 85GM, and is nowhere as sharp as the Sigma, the Bokeh is very dreamy-like my Leica Noct 1.0, but super sharp on the focus area, however, truth be told, it is so hard to nail focus on the Noct, maybe 1 out of 10 is in focus. How about a short review on the S1r version 1.7 firmware, like to get your take on the supposed improvement on AF. Thank you again for taking the time to do these great videos.

Hi Alex thanks and glad to hear you are enjoying your new sigma lens. Re s1r 1.7 fw .. I would be honest I probably won't do that this time. Reason is the improvement was previously seen on the s5 and I did some comparison of the s5 with a s1h previously in my s5 review and there are some noticeable improvements so maybe have a look at my s5 autofocus video and I expect identical improvements for the s1r with the 1.7fw

your static autofocus hunting is a tiny bit flawed. the camera HAS to move the element. it doesnt know when something is "in focus" it just knows when peak contrast has been achieved. it needs to know what out of focus looks like before it knows what "in focus" looks like. Now that the camera has to wiggle the elements a little bit, the f/1.4 is going to look like it "hunts" more, because its f/1.4. going out of focus will create more blur than the f/1.8 will. and it will be slower because f/1.4 needs to gear down the motor more, because it needs to be more precise. being off by a little with f/1.4 is far more unforgiving than f/1.8. this will almost ALWAYS be the case, since the lens mount limits how much power you can deliver to the motor. The only real way to improve it is to use lighter focusing elements (less glass, likely impacting image quality), or more efficient motors (cost will rise exponentially)

I just received the sigma 85 for sony and I can say that the autofocus is very good so far. It's all because the panasonic bodies don't have intrinsic knowledge of subject distance and they merely employ some hacks on their own lenses to try to work around it.
